Chapter 107: The Tutor’s Background

"So you’re telling me that Olivia is in love with Eternity." Freiheit shot Evan a quizzical look. "So why exactly am I here?"

Eternity raised her hand, to which Evan gestured for her to speak.

"I also would like to know the same thing," she said, nodding in agreement.

They were now lounging in the living room, with Freiheit sitting on the armchair and Eternity and Evan sitting on the sofa. All of them knew that Freiheit preferred the sofa, but for some reason, he decided to sit elsewhere on today’s visit.

Today’s summoned visit, rather.

"How exactly did you come to know Olivia?" Evan probed, neglecting to answer Freiheit and Eternity’s question altogether.

Eternity raised an eyebrow, looking at him in disbelief.

"Didn’t you mention yourself that Olivia was hired through her connections?"

Evan nodded. "That’s exactly my point. Olivia claimed to have received her tutoring position through nepotism, yet she mentioned that her mother had disowned her."

"Are you saying that Olivia’s lying?" Eternity furrowed her eyebrows, and her tone was a mixture of disbelief and accusation.

"What I’m saying is," Evan spoke with emphasis, sounding slightly irritated with Eternity’s response. "I think there’s something more happening behind the scenes than meets the eye. So tell me, brother."

Evan gestured at Freiheit, causing Eternity’s attention to shift in his direction. Freiheit didn’t seem fazed that all attention was on him.

"What’s the real deal behind this ’Olivia Wilde’ girl that you brought into our lives?"

Eternity expected Freiheit to look at them in confusion because she sure was confused about what was happening at the moment. Instead, he grinned widely and said, "I thought you’d never ask."

***

Olivia was the only daughter of renowned artists, painter Juliet Wilde and composer Abraham Wilde. Her parents divorced when she was only a few months old after Juliet found out that Abraham was a closeted homosexual who masqueraded at gay BDSM clubs at night.

"That’s oddly specific," Evan said, raising an eyebrow.

Freiheit could only shrug as he continued his story.

Although Abraham provided child support to Juliet, he was largely absent from Olivia’s life. Olivia lacked a father figure growing up, but what she did have was a domineering mother figure.

Juliet Wilde, brokenhearted from her divorce, never remarried, even with her many suitors—

"Were you one of them?" Eternity asked curiously. "Her suitor, I mean."

Freiheit placed his index finger on his lips and winked.

Anyway, using the anguish overflowing in her soul after her fresh divorce, she made painting her medium to let out all her negative feelings. Art connoisseurs noticed that her style had significantly changed and caused her career to boom in the industry, more so than her already established career as an artist.

"Wait," Evan interrupted. "How is Mrs. Wilde’s career significant to Olivia’s attraction to Eternity?"

There was a weird glint in Freiheit’s blue eyes as he answered grimly.

"Oh, Evan, I don’t claim to be a psychologist but I can say I’m able to read a person’s actions based on their upbringing."

Evan furrowed his eyebrows deeply but didn’t say anything else, so Freiheit continued.

Growing up, Olivia was expected to be gifted in either composing or painting. After all, her parents were prodigies so the people around her expected her to inherit either of her parents’ skills.

But she didn’t.

No matter how many times Juliet taught her daughter how to paint, Olivia just couldn’t produce any noteworthy artwork.

"And I’m not saying this because Juliet has a high standard for her craft," Freiheit clarified. "Juliet was sane enough to know how to fairly judge a child’s painting. It’s just..."

"Olivia just wasn’t good in that field?" Eternity finished for him.

Freiheit nodded glumly.

"To say that Juliet was disappointed was an understatement."

Juliet expected her daughter to follow in her footsteps, but Olivia just didn’t have the eye and skill to paint as a child. Still, the Wilde matriarch persevered and hoped that Olivia inherited her father’s musical talent.

But she didn’t.

Olivia, for the life of her, was tone-deaf. She couldn’t sing, couldn’t play the guitar, piano, violin, cello, flute—every possible instrument she could get her hands on, it just didn’t sound right when it was Olivia who was playing it.

Juliet was heartbroken, even though her daughter showed signs of being academically gifted. It wasn’t what she wanted for Olivia. She was the complete opposite of a mother who wanted her child to be an honor student but ended up having a child gifted with the arts instead.

"That’s..." Eternity trailed off.

"Fucked up," Evan finished for her.

Eternity raised an eyebrow. "I was going for ’weird,’ Evan."

"Still applies."

Going back to the story, Olivia showed signs of being gifted in science, mathematics, and written composition. Hence, she skipped multiple levels of school, causing her to graduate high school and enter university early.

"But instead of being celebrated for it, Juliet took it negatively and gave Olivia an ultimatum," Freiheit said as he adjusted his weight on his seat. "Take a bachelor in fine arts or be disowned."

"But didn’t you mention already that Olivia didn’t have the talent for painting?"

Freiheit nodded, his lips forming a thin, straight line.

Juliet was still in denial after all these years. But one could guess that Olivia couldn’t live up to Juliet’s expectations of what an ideal daughter was since she deliberately ignored her mother’s ultimatum.

"So her mother disowned her..." Evan mumbled, rubbing his chin as he was in deep contemplation.

"But even if Juliet did," Freiheit said and spoke with a time as if he were trying to humanize Juliet after sharing all the awful things she’d done. "Juliet still made sure to look out for Olivia in her own special way."

"So you’re saying that she’s moving the strings behind the scenes?" Eternity asked, and her curiosity peaked.

Freiheit nodded.

"I’m rather greatly indebted to Juliet, so you can say I finally paid it when I got Olivia hired as your tutor."

Still, Eternity looked quite confused as she said, "So how did this explain why Olivia has a crush on me?"

"Simple," Freiheit snorted. "Olivia is looking for an older female figure in her life, and you just happened to be there."
