Chapter 131: Fruitfly

"Have you heard, Miss Doll?" Jakob asked as the two of them walked down the hallway toward the cafeteria. "About Müller and Becker?"

"Who?" Eternity gave him a sideways glance, puzzled.

"The guys from a few days ago," he said, pressing his lips together as if he couldn’t bear to say another word.

But he didn’t need to.

"Oh, yes, I do know about what happened to them," Eternity said. They now stood in front of the cafeteria entrance. "I heard they got sanctions and were sent to attend gender sensitivity seminars?"

He nodded and pushed the door open for Eternity.

"What a gentleman you are, Jakob," she said coyly as she entered the cafeteria.

"And you know, this is why I’m not the one attending those gender sensitivity seminars," Jakob chuckled as he followed her inside.

"D!" A flamboyant voice called out. "Here, I saved us a table!"

They both turned to their left, spotting J flailing his hands in the air, trying to get Eternity’s attention.

Eternity waved back at him, although with less enthusiasm.

"’D?’" Jakob repeated, looking at her in confusion.

"That’s his nickname for me," she explained. "Come on, Jakob. Follow me."

He reluctantly nodded but followed her as they headed to the table J had reserved for them.

Once they reached the table, the gleeful expression on J’s face disappeared and was replaced with confusion.

"Who’s this?" he asked, his tone dripping with disdain.

There was something in his tone that irked Eternity. He sounded like he was referring to Jakob as a disgusting object.

This should’ve been the glaring first red flag that J and Jakob’s encounter would be a disaster. But either Eternity was colorblind or she deliberately ignored it because she genuinely wanted her favorite people to meet and get along.

"J, this is my friend from the CEO’s division, Jakob Schmidt," Eternity introduced. "Jakob, this is my friend from the CFO’s division, J."

"Just ’J’?" Jakob asked curiously. "No last name?"

"Yes," J said snobbishly. "Just ’J’."

"You know," Eternity tried to joke. "Like Adele?"

But no one laughed.

Instead, the tension between them was so thick that no one could cut it with a knife.

"So, J!" Eternity said awkwardly, trying to ease the tension. "I hope you don’t mind if Jakob eats lunch with us?"

"I actually do mind," he said, looking at Jakob from head to toe with judgmental eyes. "But since he’s already here, we might as well."

Eternity glanced at Jakob and saw his Adam’s apple bob as he swallowed.

Seeing that the atmosphere had no plans of lightening up, she gestured at the table. "Let’s sit down."

"Let’s," J said, sitting down.

Eternity followed suit. Jakob was about to sit as well, but before he could, J addressed him.

"Mister Schmidt, can you order first? D and I will stay at the table while you do, so others will know it’s already occupied."

Jakob wrinkled his forehead and gave a hesitant glance at Eternity.

Technically, Eternity could have gone with Jakob to the counter to order already to be time-efficient. Still, J wanted Jakob to go away and be alone with Eternity for some reason.

"Please do, Jakob," Eternity said, patting his elbow reassuringly. "I’ll just be here waiting for you to come back."

"Do you want me to order food for you as well?" he offered. "Something light, perhaps?"

Eternity knew Jakob said the last part out of concern since he assumed she had an eating disorder. But for some reason, J took offense to it.

"Are you saying that because of the patriarchal belief that women should ’maintain their figure’?" J sneered.

"What? No!" Jakob scoffed.

But before he could defend himself, J continued.

"You didn’t even take into consideration that what if D is famished and wanted a burger today?"

Jakob glanced at Eternity, frowning.

"Do you, Miss Doll?"

"You don’t need to order for me," Eternity said, answering Jakob’s earlier question rather than his current one. "I’ll just order for myself when I check what’s available on today’s menu."

Jakob nodded slowly, giving J one last look, before heading to the queue for the food.

Once they were alone, J harshly grabbed Eternity by the shoulder and forced her to look at him. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"Why did you invite another person without informing me?!"

"I-I’m sorry," Eternity lowered her face as she spoke in a small, embarrassed voice. "I thought you would enjoy another person’s company..."

"I would enjoy another person’s company if that person wasn’t Jakob fucking Schmidt!" he hissed.

"You don’t like Jakob?" Eternity asked, knitting her eyebrows together.

"’Don’t like him’?" J repeated. "I fucking hate that motherfucker!"

"J, please calm down," Eternity pleaded, increasingly worried about how ill he was talking about Jakob.

J looked like he wanted to spit more venom, but once he saw the look in her green eyes, he stopped.

It only occurred to Eternity at that moment when J slowly calmed down that he was heaving heavily, like his anger toward Jakob was so intense it physically made him breathless, as if he had just finished running a marathon.

"Sorry about that, D," J said, his breathing finally calming down. "I didn’t mean for you to see that side of me."

Eternity didn’t say anything. Instead, she just stared at him in utter silence.

J sighed, facepalming and shaking his head. "I shocked you enough to send you speechless, did I?"

Again, Eternity didn’t say anything.

He sighed again, deeper this time. "You must be curious why I hate the man so much."

Finally, Eternity spoke. "I would be lying if I said I wasn’t."

He scratched the side of his face and clicked his tongue as if he didn’t want to say it but felt he needed to. "Remember Esteban?"

Her green eyes widened before confusion spread across her face. "The elevator operator that you like?"

"My boyfriend," he paused, shaking his head. "My ex-boyfriend. Well, I guess that part doesn’t matter. We already broke up."

"How did Jakob come into the equation?"

J closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, as if he were gathering his strength to say something. Once he exhaled, he opened his eyes and looked at Eternity with a hardened expression.

"Esteban accidentally called out that whore’s name when we were fucking. And it didn’t happen once. It happened so many times. I couldn’t believe I would stoop so late and let myself date a man who hadn’t moved on from his ex."
