Chapter 148: Straight From the Doll’s Mouth

"Evan!" Eternity shouted worriedly as she pushed the door open.

There he was, sitting on his bed, gazing out the window of his private room. He looked so peaceful, his eyes following the terminally ill children as they ran around the hospital garden, their laughter echoing through the glass. They were enjoying their moments of joy, savoring their last breaths.

Just like he did.

"Evan..." Eternity whispered, her voice quivering as she ran to his bedside. "I’m sorry that it took so long for me to visit you--"

Evan raised his frail index finger and gently pressed it against Eternity’s lips. Her moss-green eyes widened in surprise, locking onto his weary yet tender blue gaze. He looked at her with such softness, as if he couldn’t get enough of the sight of her.

"I understand, Eternity," he said gently. "I heard that Freiheit, with the help of his connections, stopped you from visiting me here."

Eternity bit her lips, hesitating to confirm or deny what she just heard. She didn’t want to badmouth Freiheit in front of Evan, but she was still angry at Freiheit for separating the two of them.

"I don’t know how he did it," she said bitterly. "I know that he’s a powerful man in his own right, but I didn’t think it was possible that he could bar me from visiting you for a complete month!"

"I can’t blame you if it took a month before you managed to visit me," Evan said. "In fact, I thought I would meet my death before I would ever see you again."

She grabbed his hand, now frail and shaking, and nestled her cheek against his palm. The warmth of his touch, despite its weakness, sent a shiver throughout her whole body. She closed her eyes, feeling the slight tremble of his fingers against her skin.

"Don’t say that, Evan." Eternity pleaded, her voice unsteady as she did.

Evan’s thumb gently stroked her cheek, his gaze never leaving her face.

"But that’s the truth, Eternity," Evan chuckled. "Look at me. Do I look like the same man you met months ago?"

Eternity didn’t say anything, but both of them knew that there were no words that needed to be said because it was true.

Evan no longer had his previous vigor.

His once silky brown hair had completely turned white, a visible and contrasting difference to the color it previously had. His skin, which used to have a healthy flush of pink, was now pale and almost translucent, with veins visible and prominent, the mere sight of him felt eerie to look at. The skin hung loose and wrinkled, an appearance that seemed impossibly aged for a man who was only 28.

He looked like an old man on his deathbed, and Eternity wasn’t sure if she meant this literally or idiomatically.

"I’m sorry," she cried, tears trickling down her cheeks and wetting Evan’s hand. "This is all my fault."

"So you admit it?" A voice behind her accused. "You admit that you’re sucking the life out of Evan?"

Eternity spun around to look for the source of the voice, but she didn’t even have the opportunity to respond. The door behind her abruptly opened, revealing Freiheit, a deep scowl etched on his face.

"Freiheit," Evan said, nodding in his direction in acknowledgment as if he were expecting his presence. "I see that you’ve finally allowed my future wife to visit me."

"She can’t be your future wife if you die tomorrow." Freiheit said bluntly.

"Freiheit!" Eternity shouted in disbelief. "Don’t say something so evil!"

Freiheit turned to face her, his expression cold and unmoving.

"That’s rich coming from someone who’s slowly killing my brother."

Eternity tensed up, tightening her grip on Evan’s hand. But she didn’t try to defend herself. Seeing that her silence was her admission, Freiheit sighed.

"Anyway," he said. "The reason why I barred you from visiting Evan was because I wanted to check if his condition would improve once you two were separated."

Freiheit gestured at Evan, who looked almost like a skeleton now with his hollowed cheeks and frail body.

"But as you can see for yourself, he didn’t improve. Not one bit."

Eternity let go of Evan’s hand, using her own to cover her face instead. She swallowed the cries that wanted to escape from her lips, yet her tears fell freely. Her shoulders trembled as she tried to stifle her sobs. Guilt was starting to fill her entire body.

"I’m sorry, Evan," she said in between her sobs. "I’m sorry for doing this to you."

Evan didn’t say anything. Instead, he gently wrapped his arm around her back, feeling the warmth of her body against his. He pulled her closer to his chest, resting his chin lightly on the top of her head.

"It’s fine, Eternity," he assured, patting her back comfortingly. "If my life is the sacrifice so you could turn fully into a human, then it’ll be worth it."

Her moss-green eyes widened, and she quickly pulled away from him. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

"You knew?" She asked in an almost accusatory tone. She shifted her eyes to Freiheit before demanding. "What else have you told him, Freiheit?"

Freiheit scoffed. "Shouldn’t you be the one telling the truth to your ’future husband’, Eternity?"

Eternity scowled at how mocking Freiheit said the words ’future husband.’ Quickly, she wiped the tears off her eyes. The look of guilt was replaced with determination.

"Fine," she said at last. "I’ll tell you the truth about us Eternity Women."

Freiheit looked surprised at first as if he didn’t expect her to actually reveal the truth. His eyebrows shot up, and his mouth parted slightly. But this look of surprise quickly morphed into one of triumph, a smug smile curling his lips.

"Do us the honors," he said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. He then moved his gaze to Evan, who had a neutral expression on his face. "Listen carefully, Evan. You’ll finally have no reason to doubt me since you’ll hear the truth straight from the Doll’s mouth."
