Chapter 150: Waltz with Eternity

There was a long pause between all of them. Both men were carefully processing what Eternity had just said, while she waited patiently for them to ask more questions and clarifications. It was only after a while that Evan broke the silence.

"What?" Evan demanded once he finally snapped from his initial shock. "You have to be kidding me."

Eternity shook her head, and a strand of hair fell astray on her face. She immediately tucked it behind her ear so the two men in the room could see the seriousness in her eyes.

"Why would I be kidding about something that could save your life, Evan?" She pointed out.

"I... I can’t do that!" Evan argued frantically. "I won’t do that to you! I could never think of hurting you, much less destroying you!"

"Why wouldn’t you?" Eternity frowned as if he had just said the stupidest thing she had ever heard.

"Because I love you, Eternity!"

She froze, and her moss-green eyes dilated like saucers. But almost immediately, she gathered her composure, leaving Evan slightly disappointed with her reaction. He expected her to be surprised that he suddenly professed his love for her after all this time.

Instead, Eternity merely watched him with a bitter smile.

"This is the first time you’ve ever told me I love you," she said. "It’s ironic that you’re saying this now just because you know it’s either you or me that will meet our end soon."

"No—" Evan tried to speak loudly, but his words were cut off by a fit of harsh, barking coughs that were both painful and pitiful sounds to the ear.

Freiheit immediately went to get a clean paper cup near the water dispenser that Evan’s hospital room provided. He hastily filled it with water and headed to the bed to pass it to Evan. However, Evan’s hands were shaking so terribly that he couldn’t even hold it.

"I’ll hold it," Eternity offered.

Freiheit gave her a skeptical look as he held the cup tightly, almost to the point of crushing it and making its content spill. She let out a sigh of annoyance, clearly having enough of his hostility.

"Freiheit, please," she pleaded desperately. "Can you stop acting like this already? You already made your case that you hate me. What’s more to prove?"

Freiheit didn’t say anything and continued scowling at her, but he handed her the semi-crumpled paper cup, which she gratefully accepted.

Eternity leaned in closer to the bed, gently supporting Evan as she brought the cup to his lips. In a matter of seconds, he finished draining it to the last drop, and his coughing fit had already calmed down.

Once he was finished, she placed the empty cup on the bedside table and softly brushed a stray lock of hair from his forehead.

"Better?" she asked, her voice so small it was almost inaudible.

Evan nodded, his voice was raspy as he replied with a soft "yes."

Eternity smiled brightly before returning to her seat, a plain white plastic chair.

"Well?" Freiheit said impatiently. "How will we destroy you?"

"Freiheit!" Evan gave his brother a warning glance. "We will not do any harm to Eternity!"

But Freiheit completely ignored him and continued speaking.

"So far, this was the only question that I have yet to get an answer from when I went to Manika," he said. "The island folks were willing to tell me about Eternity Women’s mechanisms but they refused to tell me how to undo your ’curse.’"

"’Curse,’ huh?" Eternity repeated absentmindedly. "I guess you’re right about that, Freiheit."

"So?" Freiheit seemed to be losing his patience at a quick speed. "Do we burn you alive or?"

"That’s oddly specific," Evan frowned at him.

Freiheit gave him a glance before shrugging. "Just an inspiration from ’Waltz with Death.’"

Eternity and Evan gave him a look of confusion.

"What are you talking about?" Eternity was the first one to ask.

"It’s nothing important." Freiheit waved his hand in dismissal, signaling that he was changing the topic. Or rather, returning to the topic at hand. "So are you going to answer my question or not?"

Eternity looked at him with disapproval but resigned herself to admit the truth.

"I cannot die by simply being burned alive, stabbed to death, or any other methods that could easily kill humans like you."

"So how?" he pressed. "What could we do to destroy you so that we can change Evan’s fate?"

Eternity pressed her lips together before speaking. "I need to be returned to where you got me."

"You mean we need to bring you to Manika?" Freiheit said, glaring at her. "Or is this some sort of trick to make us bring you home and to your creator?"

"Oh," she exclaimed with slight surprise. "You’ve met The Maestra?"

Freiheit nodded. "I did. She lives in the fucking highest mountain in Manika, I did all that effort just so I could save Evan from you."

Eternity seemed used to Freiheit’s jabs against her at this point. She merely nodded at him in acknowledgment and continued.

"I can’t exactly give you the details of the process of how to dispose us Eternity Women." She said. "And I’m not withholding this information just to protect myself from you. I’m saying this because I genuinely do not know what the Maestra does to save the owners of Eternity Women."

"I guess Eternity and I are hopping to the next ship heading to Manika first thing in the morning," Freiheit yawned, covering his mouth. "When we return, I hope Evan has finally returned to his normal, healthy self."

"Why are you excluding me from the trip?" Evan frowned. "Shouldn’t I be the one to talk to the Maestra since I’m Eternity’s--"

He held his tongue, not wanting to say ’owner’ because Eternity wasn’t her slave or anything dehumanizing.

"You can’t possibly join us on the trip!" Freiheit insisted. "You could barely hold a paper cup, yet you want to go into a strenuous voyage that could possibly kill you?"

"I will go with you," Evan said in an authoritative voice, causing his brother to flinch. "Whether you allow me or not. Besides, my purpose for going there is not because I want to dispose of Eternity but because I’m going to ask if there’s an alternative."

"Alternative?" Freiheit wrinkled his forehead, already knowing that he wouldn’t like what his brother was about to say.

Evan nodded.

"I’m going to find a way where Eternity could become human without having to sacrifice myself in the process."
