Chapter 36: Trying to be A Better Person for the Doll

"I’m sorry." She lowered her head at last, though her tone was stern and unlike her usual softness. "I should have known from my place that I am nothing more than just an object of pleasure."

It was odd how he realized the gravity of his words when they finally came from Eternity herself.

"Eternity, I’m—"

"You’re right," she said. "I was created just to give you pleasure, nothing more. I have no right to speak. I have no right to give my opinion. I was created to serve you and nothing more."

"No, Eternity..." He tried to speak now that he had finally snapped out of his anger. But for some reason, he didn’t know how to defend himself since he didn’t know what had gotten to him.

"I should be thankful to you." Eternity agreed with him, though it sounded quite bitter. "You are treating me with respect. I’m sorry that I acted as if it wasn’t enough. Please forgive me, Evan."

She finally raised her head, looking at him eye-to-eye. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"May I dismiss myself?"

Evan was speechless. With no words to say, he merely nodded in response.

Eternity gave him a polite nod before exiting the kitchen-dining room.

Evan slumped on the kitchen counter. It took him a few seconds before he realized what had just transpired.

He fucked up.

Big time.

***

Evan was standing in front of Eternity’s room, contemplating for almost ten minutes already if he should knock on her door or just leave her alone for tonight.

He read some relationship advice on the Internet that couples should fix an argument before going to sleep, while he also saw some contrasting opinions where he should let Eternity have a moment with herself.

Evan made a deep sigh, lowering his hand, which was more than ready to knock on the door.

It never mattered to him before that his sexism offended a woman. Hell, he enjoyed it and relished every single moment when they got angry at him.

But when it was Eternity, he felt like there was something deeply wrong with him. No, there was something especially wrong with him. He was angry at himself for even implying that Eternity was lower than a woman for being a sex doll.

Evan clicked his tongue and turned his heels.

The door abruptly opened.

His ice-blue eyes widened and his head spun around, only to see Eternity coming out of the room, wearing a peach nightgown made out of silk and a pair of fluffy bunny slippers.

"Evan," she called out. "Wait."

Evan faced her with an unnatural timidity in his demeanor.

"Eternity." He gave her an acknowledging nod, pretending that she didn’t catch him red-handedly waiting at her doorstep.

She returned the nod. "Evan."

"I... I was just... I was just going to the bathroom." He lied.

"The bathroom is on the other end of the hall, Evan."

Evan felt a lump form in his throat, unable to say anything else about their situation. But luckily, Eternity seemed to have noticed his predicament and motioned for him to enter her room.

Evan was surprised but didn’t say anything and merely did as he was told.

Once they were both inside, Eternity walked toward her bed and sat on its soft cotton comforters. She patted the space on the bed beside her, implying that he sat there. Evan felt like he was being treated like a dog, but he followed her directions anyway.

Once they were both comfortably yet awkwardly sitting on the bed, they both spoke at the same time.

"I’m sorry."

Evan and Eternity looked, both shocked at how perfectly in unison they were. A small smile tugged at the corners of Eternity’s lips, and so did Evan’s. For some reason, the heaviness in his chest that had been eating him up since Eternity excused herself felt like it was slowly being lifted up.

"I’m sorry, Eternity," Evan said. His voice was unnaturally soft, and it made him cringe internally. Yet, he remained steadfast in his intentions. "I hurled some hurtful words toward you. Please know that I didn’t mean any of it, and I just said it in a fit of rage.

Eternity reached out and placed her hand on his, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"I know, Evan. I know. I never doubted you. I don’t think I ever will. I know that you’re a kind person, but you just have your own flaws, just like any other human being.

"You asked me if I thought that you changed just because I met you..." She forced a smile. It was so painful to see. "I actually did. I’m sorry for thinking that way. It was stupid of me to think that I could change you in a span of a few days."

"Eternity..." Evan tried to speak, but his words failed him.

She only offered a nod, her expression softening.

"You had that prejudice against women for years, and it was probably deeply ingrained within you. I understand that; I truly do. But when you said that you’d treat me like a real woman and that you’d treat me with respect, it caused me to not believe your previous claims that you were a misogynist. I thought you were just making a really bad joke.

"You even waited for us to be official before we even had sexual activities together! It made me really happy!" Her voice indicated how much joy she felt when she recalled the memory. "So that made me think that you weren’t as bad as you said you were. But last night, you showed me how real it was."

She pursed her lips, trying to hide the fact that they were trembling badly.

"It scared me."

"And I’m sorry." Evan apologized again, for the nth time in a span of less than two hours.

"I appreciate it, Evan," she said, though the trembling of her lips and voice didn’t stop. "I appreciate the fact that you see me as a real woman and not just a plaything for you to fuck. But if you see me as a real woman, but you treat them like mere objects, wouldn’t it seem like you were treating me as a sex doll just the same?"

Evan froze, realizing the deep hypocrisy in his words. Eternity smiled at him as if she were able to mind-read his epiphany.

"I’m thankful that you treat me as a woman, not just your plaything. I really do. But if you truly want to treat me with respect, you should look at women as equals. It doesn’t matter if you treat me with respect if you don’t treat other women the same."

Evan looked at her with hesitancy, unable to respond to her. Eternity seemed to have noticed his reluctance, for she offered him an encouraging smile.

"We all have our flaws and past mistakes, Evan. But the important thing is that we acknowledge them and strive to be better. It won’t be an overnight transformation. I don’t expect you to change the moment the sun rises. But please."

She held his hand tighter.

"Try for me."

Evan bit his lips, nodding.

"I will," he said slowly. "I’ll try. I don’t know when I’ll stop my prejudice against women or how long it might take. But for you, I will."

Eternity beamed at him before leaning in to gently kiss him.
