Chapter 38: The Doll’s Sister-in-Law

After Evan’s announcement, he immediately prepared the spare room in the apartment. He darted around with a frantic look, preparing the extra room for an upcoming visit.

Eternity, eager to lend a helping hand, followed him and meticulously assisted in changing the sheets and vacuuming the floor. She couldn’t help but notice the intense unease that seemed to emanate from Evan as he scrutinized every detail in the room, ensuring absolute perfection.

"Are you alright, Evan?" Eternity couldn’t help but ask as Evan placed the same vase in the same place as before.

"What?" Evan glanced back at her, seemingly lost in his thoughts, as he picked up the vase before putting it again in the same place.

"You’re... nervous," she pointed out, though the word ’nervous’ seemed an understatement.

"Am I?" He said it distractedly, looking for another thing in the room to nitpick about.

Eternity nodded.

"Is she a very orderly person?" ’For you to worry about everything in this room,’ she wanted to add.

Evan scoffed. "No, she’s the complete opposite of what I would call an ’orderly’ person!"

Eternity frowned.

"So... why?" Was all she could say.

"Why what?" 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

"Why are you picking up that vase again for the fifth time?"

Evan halted his actions.

He was, indeed, planning to pick up the same vase again. He wasn’t sure if it was for the fifth time, though.

He sighed deeply, sitting on the newly changed covers of the bed. Eternity followed suit, sitting right beside him.

"Because she’s Cynthia," he answered at last.

"What about her?" Eternity tilted her head to the side.

"I don’t want her to be uncomfortable in this apartment."

"So you kept picking up the vase?"

Evan wanted to roll his eyes, but he knew Eternity should be the one doing it because he was at his wit’s end and was being unreasonable.

"I just..." Evan sighed again, burying his face in his hands. "I don’t want to disappoint her."

"So you... picked the vase up again and again?"

"Please ignore that, Eternity."

"One does not simply ignore someone who is harassing a vase." Eternity pointed this out.

"Fair enough."

Eternity chuckled, placing her hand on her mouth.

"Why are you laughing?" Evan gave her a side glance.

"I just didn’t expect to see this side of you." She tried to stifle her laughter, but she was failing horribly. "You’re so..."

"Neurotic?" Evan offered.

"Worried,"

"I’m usually like this at work," Evan said, feeling slightly relieved that she didn’t think of him as mentally deranged. "So if you ever come work with me, you’ll see this side more often."

"I’d love to see you repeatedly picking up the vase in your office!" Eternity beamed at him.

"Please," he literally begged. "Forget what you saw just now."

Eternity smiled, nodding.

"You must really love your sister," she whispered. "I’m quite excited to meet her."

"Fuck!" Evan suddenly swore.

Eternity nearly jumped in her seat, wholly startled at his outburst.

Evan turned and looked at her with his icy-blue eyes as wide as saucers.

"I forgot!" He continued.

"Forgot what?"

"I forgot to mention her to you!"

Eternity frowned, looking quite a bit hurt.

"You didn’t mention me to your sister?" She repeated.

If her expression wasn’t enough of a hint for Evan that she was pretty sad with what he just said, Eternity’s tone was a dead giveaway.

"Oh!" he exclaimed, realizing what he had done. "Oh, no, my Eternity!"

Evan grabbed her arms, rubbing his hands comfortingly in an up-and-down motion on the soft flesh of her triceps.

He leaned into her and gave Eternity’s forehead a swift peck while his hands moved up to the back of her head, running his fingers on her long red hair.

"It’s not that I intentionally didn’t mention you to Cynthia!" He said. "I was just... preoccupied—"

"Preoccupied," Eternity repeated, her tone in disbelief.

"—With things... It didn’t come to my mind that I have to introduce you to her soon."

"The ’near future’ being tomorrow," Eternity frowned, pulling away from him just to cross her arms.

He looked at her helplessly. It seemed that words would comfort Eternity because he neglected to tell his family about her.

"Look!" Evan sighed. "I just want to remind you that I hate women—"

"That’s what we literally fought about a while ago!"

"Yes, I know, Eternity." He spoke slowly, as if this would calm her down. "But think of it this way: why would a woman-hater like myself suddenly find himself a girlfriend?"

Eternity’s expression slowly changed, connecting the dots with the help of his words.

"Do you get what I’m saying now?"

She nodded, though there was still doubt in her eyes.

"So please," he pleaded. "Don’t be angry anymore."

Eternity pouted, crossing her arms even more, if possible.

"I’ll think about it." Though she was smiling teasingly.

Evan chuckled, burying his face in the crook of her neck.

"Gosh, I’m so nervous." His voice was shaking and slightly muffled as he said it.

Eternity patted him on the back. It was a gesture that he often found condescending, but he didn’t seem to mind when Eternity did it.

’Shhhh,’ A voice from a distant memory echoed in his mind. ’It’s going to be alright, Evanescence.’

Evan pulled away, a gasp escaping from his lips.

Eternity looked at him wide-eyed. "Is there a problem, Evan?"

He shook his head, faking a smile.

"Let’s go to bed already, Eternity."

Eternity didn’t seem to mind that he purposely changed the topic. Or maybe she simply didn’t notice. Either way, they went to their respective rooms after their talk and went to bed.

Although Evan just lay on his bed for the entire night, staring at the ceiling with his eyes wide open.

Evan loved his sister. He truly did. And he knew that Cynthia loved him as dearly as he did.

Because of that, he was sure that Cynthia would make a scene tomorrow when she saw Eternity.

Cynthia had a brother complex, after all.
