Chapter 39: Dolls Are More In Touch With Her Feelings Than Actual Humans

"May I go with you?" Eternity asked, although Evan noticed that she was already wearing her stylish outdoor clothes.

She was wearing a white knit cardigan over a brown spaghetti-strap dress, while her footwear was a pair of white Mary Janes. A delicate pendant adorned with a single pearl graced her collarbone, and her ears were decorated with simple pearl studs.

Eternity rarely wore any makeup, but this time, a hint of it enhanced her features even more. Soft, rosy cheeks and a light dusting of mascara drew attention to her captivating, deep green eyes.

Eternity must have wanted to be liked by Cynthia to a high degree because she really came prepared, which was really unusual for her.

Thankfully, Cynthia wasn’t the type to get insecure about other women’s beauty. Instead, she’s the type of girl who would ask other women what shade of lipstick they’re wearing because it looked good on them. ’Women empowerment’, or something Evan didn’t give a flying fuck about.

"No," was Evan’s terse answer.

"But whyyyyy?" Eternity whined. She hadn’t done this in a while.

’Still as adorable as the first time she did it,’ Evan thought to himself.

"I don’t..." He hesitated, trying to find the right words without offending her.

Unbeknownst to Evan, his lack of words was offending in itself.

"Fine." Eternity crossed her arms, pouting.

"Eternity," he groaned. "Don’t be so difficult."

"I’m not."

"You’re throwing a tantrum like a child."

"I’m not!"

"You’re raising your voice at me."

"I’m not." She whispered this time.

Evan laughed, ruffling Eternity’s hair.

She frowned, pushing his hands away from ruining her perfectly fixed hair. But he knew that no amount of hair ruffling was enough for him to ruin her perfectness.

"I don’t want to surprise Cynthia, that’s all." Evan finally said, "She’s a bit... not welcoming to new people."

"Oh!" Eternity exclaimed. "I understand."

Evan was taken aback.

"You do?"

She nodded.

"Some people are just very shy in nature, and judging from your stories about her, I can take a hint that she’s a very well-guarded person after some sad experiences."

"That’s quick of you to gauge her personality..." Evan was impressed.

Eternity could only shrug.

"I was created in order to be able to socialize with any kind of person."

"You’re some sort of social butterfly, huh?"

She chuckled. "Not necessarily. I think Eternity Women are just empathic in nature."

"How odd," Evan said. "You dolls are more in touch with your feelings than actual humans."

"That’s what makes us inhuman, Evan," Eternity pointed out. "Anyway, since you’re not planning to bring me with you... you should be more wary of the time and go to the airport already."

"Shit!" Evan exclaimed as he took a glance at his smartwatch. "You’re right. I have to go."

Eternity pointed at her cheek.

"What... What are you doing?" Evan looked at her, confused.

"Kiss on the cheek!" She pouted. "Before you go!"

Evan sighed, scratching the back of his head. But he did it anyway, while a well-hidden smile was on his lips.

"I’ll be going now," Evan said once he pulled away from her.

Eternity gave a little wave with her hand, a sad expression on her face.

"Take care, Evan."

The edge of Evan’s lips formed a slight curve as he nodded.

He then faced the door, turned the knob, and left the apartment. Eternity was left alone in the apartment, standing in front of the doorsteps.

Now that Evan gave her permission (although not explicitly given) to cook as much as she wanted, Eternity decided that she’d cook breakfast for Evan and Cynthia.

"Wait," A realization struck her. "I don’t even know what Evan’s, much less Cynthia’s, food preferences are!"

Oh, well. The classic egg and sausage will do!

Again.

Evan’s heart raced as he stood anxiously at the airport gate, waiting for the arrival of his sister, Cynthia.

It had been three years since they last saw each other, and he couldn’t contain his excitement and nervousness at the same time. Memories of their childhood flooded his mind, and he couldn’t help but wonder how much had changed in Cynthia’s life since she studied abroad.

As the crowd of passengers began to disembark, Evan’s eyes scanned each face, hoping to catch a glimpse of his sister. And then, there she was—Cynthia emerged from the crowd, looking more mature yet familiar; she looked rounder than she did the last time they saw each other in the same airport.

’Good thing Cynthia can’t read minds, or else she would’ve hit him for even implying that she gained weight!’ Evan thought to himself, walking towards her even if he had to push his way in the midst of the crowd.

As soon as she saw Evan, her face lit up, and she hurried towards him, dropping her suitcase in her excitement.

Without a second thought, Cynthia wrapped her arms around Evan, clinging to him just like she used to when they were kids. He couldn’t help but chuckle, feeling her tight embrace after all those years apart.

It was clear that Cynthia still had a brother’s complex—a deep and affectionate attachment to him that hadn’t wavered over time.

As they finally pulled apart, Evan could see tears of joy in Cynthia’s eyes.

"I missed you so much, Evan," she cried, her voice choked with emotions.

"I missed you too, Cynthia," Evan replied, patting her on the head like she liked it when they were younger.

Cynthia practically purred at the gesture, just like a cat.

Evan walked toward the suitcase that Cynthia left on the asphalt and picked it up.

"Oh, sorry!" She tried to get the suitcase.

"I insist," Evan said.

She placed her hands on her hips with an impressed look on her face.

"Since when did you start acting like that?"

"Acting like what?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"Acting all gentlemanly,"

Evan frowned.

"Just because I carried your bag for you doesn’t mean I’m a gentleman, and I still don’t like the vast majority of women and would never dare carry their bags for them if they wanted me to, in case you’re wondering."

"I wasn’t wondering,"

"Well then," Evan said, taking a deep breath as he carried her baggage. "What in the hell is in this bag?"

"Dead bodies," she grinned.
