Chapter 41: The Doll and a Diet

"So Cynthia," Evan quipped, trying to change the direction of the conversation back to his sister. "Can you tell us how life is abroad?"

Cynthia’s icy-blue eyes widened, and her round cheeks appeared to look like plump tomatoes as she grinned widely.

"I thought you would never ask!"

Oh, how Cynthia loved it so much when attention was given to her.

Evan noticed this since they were kids: Cynthia tended to be quite an attention seeker, though not in a bad way, as odd as it may sound. She was just the type of kid to seek praise and validation from other people, getting some sort of high from it.

Evan thought she’d grown out of it as she grew older, but she didn’t.

Cynthia absolutely thrived in it.

"You won’t believe the places I’ve been to!" Cynthia exclaimed excitedly, as if she were waiting for this moment to arrive this whole time. "Studying abroad is such an amazing experience! The sights, the sounds, the people—it was all so enriching."

Eternity listened carefully; her green eyes were wide with interest.

"What was your favorite place you visited?" The doll asked.

Cynthia pondered for a moment before replying.

"That’s a tough one, but I think I fell in love with the charm of a little town in Schelen Town. The colorful houses, the stunning cliffs, and the delicious food—it felt like stepping into a fairy tale."

"Schelen?" Evan repeated. "I’ve never heard of it before. It must be an interesting place."

"It truly was," Cynthia agreed, not noticing that Evan merely complimented the place out of politeness, and he didn’t actually give the slightest fucks about it. "And the people I met there were incredibly welcoming. I made some lifelong friends during my time there."

"Just friends?" Evan probed, teasingly.

"Yes, Evan, just friends!" Cynthia’s cheeks turned slightly pink, and she playfully rolled her eyes. "But yes, there were a few flings along the way. Nothing too serious, in case you’re wondering!" She added defensively, even though he was, in fact, not wondering. "I was too focused on my studies to even worry about romantic relations."

"How’s your study so far?" Evan asked, his tone sounding a bit like a father poking his nose at his daughter’s academic affairs.

"It’s fun!" Cynthia beamed. "I absolutely did not regret that I took up medicine as my career path in life."

"Even if studying took up the majority of your 20s?" Eternity asked.

"Even if studying took up the majority of my 20s," Cynthia replied. "Working with people from different backgrounds taught me so much about empathy and understanding. I realized that medicine is not just about treating physical ailments; it’s about caring for the patient holistically—mind, body, and soul."

Evan wanted to flinch.

His sister tended to say some very cringy things due to her being excessively passionate about the things that she fancied. This caused her to be deemed a ’weirdo’ growing up, but Cynthia didn’t seem to care about other people’s opinions about her hyperfixation.

In the meantime, Cynthia’s tales and her devotion to her hobby enthralled Eternity.

"You must have made a significant impact on so many lives." Eternity said it in awe.

Cynthia could only chuckle. "I hope so. But the truth is, it’s a give-and-take relationship. They get healed because of my services, and I learn from their experiences."

Eternity couldn’t help but admire Cynthia and her independent life abroad.

"It sounds like you had a truly incredible time," she said genuinely.

"It truly was." Cynthia smiled. "Oh, Eternity, I’ve been meaning to ask."

Evan tensed up, worried that Cynthia might ask further about Eternity’s nonexistent background. Eternity and he hadn’t really established a fake backstory for her yet, so it would be quite troublesome if they had to contradict stories to tell.

"Yes?" Eternity tilted her head to the side.

"Are you really not going to eat?" Cynthia frowned.

Eternity laughed nervously. "I’m currently on a diet."

’Nice save!’ Evan would’ve cheered if he could.

"On a diet?!" Cynthia frowned deeply; the flesh between her eyebrows was wrinkled. "Are you practicing fad diets, Eternity?"

Then did it occur to Evan that, although Cynthia had not yet finished her medical studies, she was more or less knowledgeable about healthy food practices? It would cause quite a bit of drama if Eternity even hinted at the fact that she practiced unscientific eating habits to lose weight.

Eternity chuckled nervously, feeling slightly caught in her lie.

"Oh, no, nothing extreme like that," she said, trying to downplay the situation. "I’m just trying to eat healthier and watch my portions, you know?"

Cynthia still seemed unconvinced, but she didn’t press further. Instead, she decided to change the subject back to her adventures abroad.

"Well, you should have tried some of the local delicacies in the places I visited. They were absolutely amazing!" She said it with a hint of pride.

"Cynthia’s quite the foodie, you know," Evan interjected, trying to lighten the mood. "She’s always been passionate about trying new cuisines and flavors."

Cynthia grinned, her enthusiasm shining through.

"Oh, absolutely! You can learn so much about a culture through its food. It’s like a journey in itself."

They continued chatting about Cynthia’s travels and food experiences, while Eternity felt a sense of relief that the topic of her eating habits had shifted away.

She knew that lying wasn’t the best approach, but she hadn’t expected Cynthia to be so knowledgeable about healthy eating practices.

Once the Holz siblings had finished eating, Eternity decided to ask permission from Cynthia if she could excuse Evan from the table.

"No need to ask for my permission, Eternity." Cynthia smiled, wiping the stray food clean from her face. "Go ahead!"

Eternity gave an apologetic smile as she dragged Evan to the other side of the apartment, making sure to be as far as possible from Cynthia’s hearing vicinity.

"Korea?" Eternity frowned. "Really, Evan?"

"I panicked!" He reasoned it out. "I just sputtered the first East Asian country that came to mind."

Eternity sighed, shaking her head.

"So I guess you didn’t tell her that I’m an Eternity Woman?"

Evan knew that whatever answer he’d give to Eternity, she’d still get angry at him.
