The CEO's Seductive Doll-Chapter 44: The Owner and the Doll Ain’t Fooling Anyone
As the afternoon slowly arrived, Cynthia yawned, signaling that the jet lag had finally caught up to her.
"I know it’s still the afternoon, but I’m getting sleepy," she said, stretching and stifling a yawn. "Is it alright if I nap for an hour?"
"Of course," Evan said. "I’ll show you to your room."
"Thank you for the tea, Eternity!" Cynthia smiled at her. "Oh, that rhymed!"
Eternity chuckled. "You’re welcome, Cynthia."
Evan guided Cynthia to the guest room while Eternity began cleaning the teacups that the siblings had just finished. While cleaning, she noticed that Cynthia had left her phone on the coffee table.
Eternity quirked an eyebrow, walking toward the coffee table to get the device.
She headed to the guest room where Cynthia would stay for the night and was about to knock on the door when she heard suspicious, hushed voices inside.
She leaned closer to the door and began eavesdropping.
"Evan," Cynthia whispered disapprovingly. "You honestly don’t think I would believe that farce of a show, do you?"
"What do you mean?" Evan feigned innocence.
Eternity bit her lips, looking down on the floor.
So Cynthia managed to catch up quite quickly with their lie. It didn’t seem surprising, actually.
Cynthia didn’t seem to be the type to be tricked easily.
"Evan," she repeated, her tone more annoyed than her previous one. "Don’t tell me you hired someone to act as your girlfriend for the few days of my stay."
Evan scoffed.
"Why would I do such a thing?!" He demanded.
"Because," she said with emphasis. "You knew I’ve always had a hint that you’re gay..."
"What the fuck?!" Evan literally shouted.
"... And you know that I’ll always love you, no matter your sexuality." Cynthia didn’t seem fazed by Evan’s swearing at her.
Well, not at her, but at what she said.
"First of all," He sounded quite annoyed as he spoke. Eternity couldn’t see Evan’s face, but she was sure Evan was wearing his usual scowl. "I’m straight."
"But you never showed interest in—" Cynthia attempted.
But Evan interrupted.
"You know I’ve never liked women."
She sighed incredulously. "That’s exactly why—"
"But Eternity is different!" Evan insisted.
"How so?" She sounded like she was in disbelief. "Is it because she looked like that whore of a—" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"Don’t speak ill of Edelweiss."
Eternity’s green eyes widened, and her mind raced as she processed the conversation she was eavesdropping on.
She didn’t know why, but upon hearing this ’Edelweiss’ person’s name, she felt an ache in her chest.
It sounded as if this person was very dear to Evan. That’s why he was so defensive of her.
She had so many questions, but she knew she shouldn’t be eavesdropping in the first place.
"Evan, please know that I’m just worried about you." Cynthia’s voice was a mix of concern and frustration. "You don’t need to pretend in front of me just to keep face."
"I’m not just ’keeping face,’ Cynthia. Eternity is my real girlfriend, not some hired whore that you’re making her out to be."
"Oh really?" It was surprising to hear such venom in Cynthia’s voice when she was showing a sweet facade for a while. But maybe that was all it was: a facade. "Why did you have to come to her rescue each time I asked about details about your relationship?"
Eternity couldn’t see what was happening inside, but she was absolutely sure Cynthia had a look of betrayal on her face.
"Why are you lying to my face, Evan?"
There was a moment of silence.
Eternity guessed that Evan was contemplating if he was going to argue with her or not.
After a while, Evan released a deep sigh.
"I just... It’s complicated, Cynthia."
There was another moment of silence between the Holz siblings, and Eternity could almost feel the tension in the air.
"Fine, Evan." Finally, Cynthia said. "I won’t ask anymore. I don’t know your reason behind all that acting a while ago, but I want you to know that I got hurt because you thought that I was stupid enough to buy it."
"I’m sorry, Cynthia." Evan sounded genuinely apologetic and didn’t sound like he was just trying to appease her. "But trust me on this: I am dating Eternity, and I... care for her."
As Eternity stood there outside the guest room, holding Cynthia’s phone in her hand, she felt another dull ache in her chest upon hearing Evan hesitate for even using the word ’care’ instead of ’love’.
Then again, she told him not to push himself to say it if he wasn’t ready.
He probably wasn’t at the moment.
Gathering her bearings, Eternity debated whether to knock on the door and return the phone or to slip away and give them their privacy quietly.
In the end, she decided to do the latter.
She retreated from the guest room and walked back to the living room, carefully placing the phone on the coffee table. She resumed her task of cleaning the teacups, her mind still processing the snippets of conversation she had overheard.
A few minutes later, Evan emerged from the guest room, his expression a mix of weariness and concern. He saw Eternity looking up at him in the kitchen, offering a small smile.
"Is everything alright?" She asked gently, not wanting to make it obvious that, indeed, she knew that everything was not alright.
"Yeah, everything’s fine," Evan assured her, even though Eternity knew he was lying. "Cynthia’s just... she’s perceptive, you know? She knew that we were lying a while ago. About our background, I mean."
Eternity nodded, understanding his explanation because she knew the story behind it.
"Thanks for cleaning up, Eternity," Evan said, attempting to change the subject as he pointed at the cups that she was holding. "You’re a lifesaver."
Eternity gave a slight shrug, placing the last teacup on the drying rack. "No problem. It’s the least I can do."
Evan let out a tired sigh, his shoulders slumping slightly. "I should probably get some rest, too. It’s been a long day."
"Definitely," Eternity agreed. "I’ll finish here and then head to bed as well."
As Evan headed to his room, Eternity couldn’t help but space out as two questions entered her mind: "Who is Edelweiss, and what was she to Evan?" But then her questions were followed by a sudden thought.
Cynthia is a two-faced bitch.
