Chapter 48: The Doll’s Brother-and-Sister-in-law

"How so?" Evan’s brows were knitted together, his forehead creasing.

Cynthia gave him a disapproving look.

"Really, Evan?"

"I mean," Evan cleared his throat, trying to make sense of the information (or lack thereof) that Cynthia shared. "I knew you guys were prone to bickering, but it just never occurred to me that you’d hate the thought of seeing him after so long!"

Cynthia’s blush deepened, and she looked away in embarrassment.

Blood drained from Evan’s face, and his mouth was slightly agape.

"Don’t tell me he actually fucked you?!’

"Evan!" Eternity and Cynthia shouted at the same time.

The former looked like she was about to swat him on the arm, while the latter covered her face with her hands in embarrassment.

"What?!" Evan shouted defensively. "Freiheit–-"

Evan bit his lips, stopping himself from sputtering out his brother’s secret just because he was overwhelmed.

"Freiheit what?" Cynthia asked pryingly as she removed her hands from her face.

"Nothing."

"Evan..." Cynthia’s tone held a mixture of warning, annoyance, and curiosity, causing Eternity to wonder if conveying all three emotions in a single name was possible.

Before Evan could respond, a voice spoke in the distance.

"Must you always blurt out the most inappropriate things at the worst moments?" The voice said, his tone laced with a combination of amusement and disbelief.

All three turned to find Freiheit leaning casually against the door, with its open door. A bemused smile was on Freiheit’s lips.

"How in the name of fuck did you open the door?" Evan demanded. "We didn’t even hear you open it!"

"The key is under the doormat," Freiheit replied, swinging the spare key in his hand as if to make a point. "Also, I’m a ninja in my spare time."

Freiheit casually waltzed inside the apartment, throwing the keys to Evan when he was just a meter away. Evan effortlessly caught it, rattling as it landed on his hand.

"Eternity!" Freiheit beamed, opening his arms in greeting. "I haven’t seen you in... a few days!"

Eternity allowed herself to be embraced by Freiheit, and she even returned his hug not out of mere politeness but because she was genuinely happy to see Evan’s other sibling.

The annoying but likable sibling.

Freiheit turned to face Cynthia, giving her an acknowledging nod while flashing his usual grin. Cynthia’s face turned a bright shade of red, and she crossed her arms. Evan was getting weirded out by his sibling’s interaction, and Freiheit just got into the apartment!

"Why do you have a..." Freiheit leaned closer to Cynthia, forcing her to look at him. "Milk mustache?"

Cynthia urgently wiped the yogurt mustache off her upper lip, pushing him away. Freiheit chuckled, ruffling Cynthia’s brown hair. It was an easy feat since Freiheit was literally towering over her. The younger Holz scoffed and immediately slapped Freiheit’s hand away.

Freiheit winced, though it was evident that Cynthia’s slap didn’t hurt much.

"Did you meet each other overseas?" Eternity spoke curiously, her moss-green eyes darting from Cynthia to Freiheit’s direction.

Freiheit’s smile only widened, revealing a trace of mischief.

"I don’t know what you mean," He faked innocence. But everyone in the room could guess that he, in fact, did. "We haven’t seen each other in years!"

Evan was still bewildered at what was going on, and Eternity caught him making a face as if there was an inside joke between Freiheit and Cynthia that he couldn’t grasp.

Imagine what Eternity felt right now.

"And it seems I’ve arrived just in time to hear about my supposed escapades." Freiheit winked teasingly at Cynthia.

Evan blinked, his confusion evident. "Wait, what escapades?"

Cynthia shot Freiheit a glare, the one that Eternity was previously subjected to.

"You’re unbelievable, Freiheit!"

As Freiheit and Cynthia continued bickering, Eternity couldn’t help but exchange glances with Evan. Evan let the two idiots continue with whatever the hell they were doing before deciding to clear his throat loudly, effectively getting their attention.

"What the fuck is going on?" Evan demanded.

"Nothing," Both of them replied at the same time.

When they realized what had just happened, Freiheit let out a hearty laugh while Cynthia glared at the ground as if it was the object of her hatred.

Even though we all know full well that it was Freiheit.

"Are you two going to continue acting like this?" Evan said, sounding evidently hurt. "I don’t know what game you two are playing, but I know I’m not involved in it."

This made the two flush as bright as a red light.

To Cynthia, this was quite the norm since she was a person who easily got flustered due to her pale skin.

But on Freiheit, it was borderline unbelievable!

This was partly because of his tanned skin, his excessive time under the sun as a traveling artist, and mainly because he was an ass with no sense of shame in his psyche.

Of course, this was proven false only at this moment.

"Tell me," Evan eyed Cynthia before gazing at Freiheit. "Did something happen between the two of you?"

The two remained silent, unsure how to break the news to Evan.

"Cynthia! Freiheit!" Evan shouted authoritatively, causing his two siblings to flinch at the sheer harshness of it.

The room seemed heavier as they all stood in the kitchen in complete silence. Evan had an impatient look as he waited for his siblings’ response.

Behind them, the wall clock was ticking as if reminding them that they were wasting Evan’s time with their hesitancy.

Just as Eternity thought the tension might become unbearable and it was time for her to intervene, Freiheit let out a heavy sigh, his gaze finally meeting Evan’s.

"Fine," Freiheit muttered, seemingly resigning himself to the truth.

Cynthia swallowed hard, her eyes shifting between her brother and Freiheit.

Evan’s patience was running thin, and it was evident that he was seconds away from grabbing Freiheit’s collar and beating the truth out of him.

Thankfully, in a voice barely above a whisper, Cynthia spoke.

"Freiheit and I, we’re... dating."

Eternity’s words came ringing back to her own ears.

’It’s not like you’re blood-related, so it’s not considered incest.’
