Chapter 50: The Owner’s Oedipus Complex

Eternity wasn’t really sure what happened next.

Did Cynthia and Freiheit leave the apartment on their own accord angrily, or did Evan explode at the mere mention of their mom and decide to kick his siblings out?

Or maybe Evan kicked them out after discovering their borderline incestuous relationship, the original topic at hand.

All Eternity knew was that it was such a whirlwind of events that she felt physically dizzy and nauseous.

... But maybe it wasn’t even connected to the events that transpired.

That was why she felt like this.

Maybe it was because Cynthia literally informed Eternity that her boyfriend (and master) was a real-life Oedipus: a motherfucker.

What is happening with their family and Sweet Home Alabama dynamics?

Eternity groaned, hunching her back as she sat on the sofa. As soon as she did, gravity pulled her long hair down, and it veiled on her face.

Exasperatedly, she tucked the lost red strand behind her ear.

Her mind was filled with so many questions. Her auto-scanning mechanism couldn’t help in answering them.

"Eternity." Evan’s deep voice called out her name. "You can use the shower now."

She looked up and saw Evan leaning on the wall near the living room entrance, wearing only a cotton towel wrapped around his hips and matching white toweling slippers. On his hand was a thick cotton-gray towel.

It still looked dry so it was obvious that it was still freshly taken from the cabinet.

His hair was still slightly damp, and water droplets traced a path down his handsome face. The wetness on his features caught Eternity’s attention, making her unconsciously lick her lips in lust.

Shaking her head as if to disperse her lewd thoughts, she gracefully rose from the sofa and approached him. Just as Evan was going to ask what the problem was, she snatched the gray towel from his hand and softly smothered his face with it.

"W-what are you–"

"Please dry yourself properly, Evan." A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she deftly removed the towel from his face, revealing an amused expression written all over his face."You look like you just got out of the shower."

"But I did–-" Evan insisted.

"And I meant that not in a good way." Eternity smiled, leaning closer to his burly chest.

"What is that supposed to even mean?" Evan huffed, running his hand on his wet hair, causing his biceps to bulge prominently.

Observing him more closely now, Evan was quite muscular. She hadn’t seen him go to the gym in her short stay in his apartment. Eternity wondered if it was normal for a human to maintain such a bulky figure without lifting weights.

"I go to the gym," Evan said as if reading her mind. "No one could have my built without working out, Eternity."

"Am I that easy to read?" She blushed, looking down, and her eyes accidentally gazed at Evan’s well-chiseled abs.

Her moss-green eyes widened, and a soft escaped from her lips.

"Stop gawking at me," He chuckled. "And to answer your question, it’s not that you’re easy to read. It’s more of... you’re openly staring at my body."

"I’m not!" Eternity insisted.

"Right," Evan said in a tone that did not necessarily suggest that he really believed her, but he was merely humoring her. "Would you like to join me at the gym next time?"

She frowned.

"I don’t see the need for me to exercise, Evan."

She didn’t even eat, so there were no calories to burn in the first place.

"Ah, you’re right. That was stupid of me to say."

She shook her head, gently smiling at him.

"Though, I appreciate the offer, Evan. Thank you."

Evan merely returned the smile, but his own was weary.

Soon, the living room was filled with silence. And it wasn’t the comforting one.

After a complete minute or two, Evan finally spoke.

"You’re not going to ask?"

"Ask what?"

"About what Cynthia..."

"About Cynthia saying you’re a motherfucker?" Eternity continued for him bluntly.

Evan choked at nothing in particular.

"That I had an Oedipus complex..." Evan rephrased for her. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Though they both knew that wasn’t what Cynthia said.

Eternity didn’t know what to say. Instead, she just helplessly looked at his icy-blue eyes.

"I told you, Evan," Eternity whispered. "I won’t force you to say anything you’re not ready to discuss."

"Aren’t you a bit curious?" His voice was desperate as if he wanted Eternity to probe him.

Pathetic.

"I would be lying if I said I wasn’t." Eternity replied honestly. "I’m not sure if Cynthia was calling you such out of spite because you called her something similarly insulting–"

Evan opened his mouth to answer, but Eternity quickly continued.

"As of the moment, I am more concerned by the fact that you were fat-shaming her."

Evan’s eyes narrowed at her words, his expression defensive.

"You must be fucking kidding me, Eternity!" His volume was a bit louder than his usual one when talking to her. "You saw Cynthia: She looked like a fucking whale!"

"Are you saying this out of anger or simply because this is what you truly felt upon seeing her after all these years?"

Evan didn’t reply.

"Because regardless," But Eternity didn’t wait for him to. "You’re still being an asshole."

Evan released an annoyed sigh.

"Are we going to fight again?"

Eternity’s darker auburn eyebrows knitted together.

"We’re not fighting, Evan." She spoke carefully, choosing her words because she knew it would escalate to a real fight if Eternity weren’t careful enough. "We’re having an honest conversation. And I think that’s necessary."

"Is it?" He mocked.

"It is,"

The air grew heavy with tension, the silence more awkward than before. Eternity waited, expecting a response, a defense, an attempt to explain himself. But to her surprise, Evan remained silent.

His lack of effort to engage in the conversation spoke volumes.

"You’re a woman," He spoke after a while. "There’s no point arguing with you because you’ll just insist you’re right."
