Chapter 57: Blind Leading the Blind

"Good morning, Sir Holz!" Jakob greeted him brightly, raising the stacked pile of paperwork in his arms. "I got some delivery for you."

Evan continued sipping on his excessively sweet coffee before placing the mug on his table, releasing a deep sigh.

"It’s already afternoon, Jakob," he said grimly.

Jakob’s smile faded away as he glanced at his wristwatch to check the time.

"Oops! My bad." He exclaimed before pointing his chin at the stack he was carrying. "Where should I place this, sir?"

"Table," Evan replied tersely. "What’s this?"

"It’s some report from the other branches that needed your immediate attention," Jakob answered as he placed the papers on Evan’s office table, his tone serious when he needed to be.

"Okay," Evan nodded.

Jakob gave a salute before heading towards the door.

"Oh, Jakob," Evan called. "Before you leave, may I ask you something?"

His office worker seemed worried. Adam’s apple noticeably bobbed as he swallowed nervously.

"Yes, Sir?"

"Do you know any good shows on any streaming platforms that I should watch?"

The tension on Jakob’s face disappeared, and he suddenly burst out laughing.

"Is there anything funny with what I said, Jakob?" Evan raised an eyebrow, though there wasn’t a hint of his usual sternness in his tone.

He coughed, suppressing his laughter.

"No, sir," Jakob replied, clearing his throat. "I’m just genuinely surprised, that’s all."

Evan hummed, unconvinced, but didn’t comment any further.

"But to answer your question, sir," Jakob began. "The Flix show ’I’ is quite good! Though the book is significantly different from its adaptation,

"Aren’t they always?" Evan chuckled.

Jakob’s surprised laughter echoed in the office. A second later, he realized what he had just done again, and he composed himself before replying.

"That’s quite true, Sir. Adaptations rarely capture the real deal of the source material."

Evan leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face.

"I might give it a try." He said this, nodding in Jakob’s direction. "Thanks, Jakob."

Jakob nodded back, his cheerful demeanor returning.

"You’re welcome, Sir!" He beamed like a child. "Let me know if you need anything else."

As Jakob left the room, Evan turned his attention to the stack of paperwork on his desk. He sighed, realizing that the peaceful afternoon he had hoped for was now filled with the troublesome task of going through reports.

But before that, he opened his ’Flix’ streaming application on his tablet computer to check out the show Jakob just mentioned.

"’I’, huh..." Evan muttered, reading the show’s synopsis.

Apparently, it was a show about a toxic relationship between a serial killer-slash-stalker and the girl he was obsessed with.

This caused him to frown.

’That’s a weird show to suggest,’ he thought to himself. ’Unless you’re a psychopath yourself.’

Evan didn’t want Eternity to learn the habits of a murderer.

Last week, Eternity told him he wanted to bring her some entertainment. Not wanting to disappoint, he had been subscribing to various music, shows, and movie streaming platforms so that Eternity could get as much access to pop culture as possible.

Since he wasn’t fond of watching movies or listening to music, Evan couldn’t possibly teach her about those things.

It would be like the blind leading the blind.

Evan would’ve availed of a subscription to e-book platforms as well, but Eternity told him she preferred reading solid books rather than on a tablet. Ever since then, he has been frequenting the nearby bookstore to get her as many books as he could.

"I should check the store again after work..." Evan said it aloud to no one in particular.

With another heavy sigh, he returned his attention to the documents on his table. He took the topmost file from the stack and began studying it.

***

Minutes turned into hours as Evan continued analyzing the paperwork, occasionally taking breaks to stretch his legs or gaze out of the office window. The sun lowered in the sky until it was barely visible because of the skyscrapers all over the city.

Only when his phone alarm started ringing did he realize that he was going overtime already.

’Better not make Eternity wait for me any longer,’ Evan thought.

Evan headed outside his office, passing by the main office area where the majority of his workers were located. Unsurprisingly, it was already empty since it was past office hours.

He entered the elevator, noting that Esteban was nowhere to be seen. His shift probably ended as well.

Evan pressed the ground floor button, and in a matter of minutes, he arrived.

He passed through the lobby, where a couple of his workers recognized him and greeted him politely. Evan only gave him an acknowledging nod as he made his way towards the exit.

The reality of a busy city greeted him as soon as the glass doors slid open. Honkings of cars, the pollution in the air that made him scrunch his nose in distaste, and a lot more overstimulating sensations that brought him discomfort.

But for some reason, it was noisier than usual outside the Royall Headquarters.

Near the exit of the building, people were forming a circle around something, or.𝘯𝘦. A couple of times, Evan heard the sound of someone taking a picture, coupled with people talking as if conducting an interview.

Reporters?

For a second, Evan wondered if the documents on his table were urgent enough to warrant a swarm of reporters outside the HQ. But as far as he delved into the papers, they were minor production issues that didn’t warrant investigation by the media.

"Please," A familiar, feminine voice spoke in a slightly unapproving tone. "Can you leave me alone? I’m waiting for someone."

"Come on, miss!" A sleazy voice insisted. "Just smile for the camera! We’re famous travel vloggers looking for pretty ladies like you around the world!"

"I said," said the female voice with emphasis. "Leave me alone, or else I’ll call Evan Holz."

Evan couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at what he had heard.

’This woman knows me?’
