Chapter 70: The Doll is More than Enough

"Wha—" Evan spluttered incredulously. "Is this why you’re angry with me?"

But instead of answering his question, Eternity threw another one back at him.

"Do you love me just because I look like her?"

Evan wanted to shout at her to tell her she was being unreasonable and to tell her she was acting like a typical paranoid woman.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he sighed and rubbed his temples, feeling another headache coming any time soon. Instead of using his regular method of accusing her of being unable to control her emotions for being a woman, he decided to talk to her in a calmer, more civilized manner.

"Do you remember what I said when you were eavesdropping on me and Edelweiss?" He spoke softly, as if he were a zookeeper trying to coax a confused animal.

Eternity’s green eyes widened, and a soft gasp escaped from her lips. She fell silent, and her expression finally softened from a scowl to a look of guilt.

She did remember.

Evan smiled tiredly, releasing a huff of air through his nose. But still, he continued just to make sure that Eternity and him were on the same page, and she did remember what he said.

"I said to her," Evan began. "If Edelweiss thought I was so hung up on her that I intentionally chose to date you just because Edelweiss looks like you, then what a shallow person would I be?"

Eternity slowly lowered her head, her hair serving as a curtain to hide her face. Her fingers, which were forming a fist, unclenched themselves and finally relaxed. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Soon, she started sobbing.

"I’m sorry." She whispered weakly, though it was barely audible because of her hiccups.

Evan walked closer to her and trapped her in a tight embrace.

"So am I, Eternity." He whispered against her ear. "So am I."

They both sat on the sofa in the living room. Evan had his arms wrapped around Eternity’s body, trying his best to calm her down. Meanwhile, Eternity’s face was leaning on his chest, using him like a makeshift pillow. His shirt was uncomfortably sticking to his skin from all her tears, but he didn’t say anything.

If she were a normal person, he’d offer her a glass of water to calm her nerves. But she wasn’t, so all Evan could do was offer her his handkerchief.

"Thank you," Eternity said in a small voice, pulling away from him as she started dabbing the handkerchief on her cheeks to wipe away her tears.

Once her sobs completely died down and her tears dried up, Evan thought it was finally time to ask her.

"What brought this on?"

He didn’t need to expound on his words. He knew Eternity understood what he meant by this. But judging from how she was avoiding his gaze, Evan was absolutely sure now that she perfectly did.

After a couple of seconds, Eternity mumbled something under her breath.

"Pardon?" Evan blinked blankly. "I didn’t quite hear that."

"I got jealous." Eternity spoke louder this time, her voice cracking from the embarrassment of admitting this.

"Of Edelweiss?" he asked, completely taken aback.

She nodded, biting her lips.

Evan gave her a look of confusion. "I thought you were bonding with her and all that?"

"We were!" Eternity admitted. "I think Edelweiss is a good person. She’s so carefree and down-to-earth... I’m not surprised that you fell for her."

He knitted his eyebrows together.

"Eternity..." He wanted to argue, but she continued.

"I know your feelings for her were in the past. I know she only thinks of you as a younger brother. But I can see how different you are around her compared to me. You were so relaxed, you didn’t even get angry when she was teasing you. You were like... a different person around Edelweiss."

Evan’s blue eyes widened.

"Was I?" He asked in disbelief, completely unaware of his actions around Edelweiss.

Eternity nodded in confirmation.

"Eternity, you have to understand," Evan said as he grabbed her hands and intertwined their fingers together. How soft and small her hands were. "Edelweiss was a part of my past, and I might’ve seemed different around her because of that: we shared a history. But that’s just it."

Eternity continued watching him with glassy eyes, so he knew that she was unconvinced.

"But why did Freiheit have to choose me because I look like Edelweiss?" She probed, her hands tightly clinging to Evan’s. "Am I just a replacement for her in your life?"

Evan shook his head, moving his hand upward to cup Eternity’s face tenderly.

"No, Eternity. You’re not a replacement." He assured. "I might not know what’s going on with Freiheit’s mind, but he probably saw a resemblance and thought it would please me, but it’s not about replacing anyone."

This time, she didn’t nestle her face in his palm. This caused a slight ache in his chest.

"Are you sure?" Eternity whispered, and her voice was filled with doubt and uncertainty.

Evan nodded.

"I’m positive." He said this, wiping his thumb on the tears that were starting to fall from Eternity’s eyes once again. "You’re you, Eternity. Do I need to say more?"

Finally, Eternity leaned into his touch, closing her eyes. Now, the tears were freely flowing from her eyes and down to her unblemished, pinkish cheeks.

"I just..." She cried, furrowing her eyebrows together. "I want to be enough for you, Evan. Not just a stand-in for a girl who you couldn’t get when you were younger."

Evan embraced her again, allowing Eternity to bury her face in his chest again. Soon, he felt his shirt more drenched than it already was.

But he didn’t mind.

She could cry on all his shirts, dampen them with tears and even snot (if she was capable of making them), and Evan wouldn’t mind.

If it was what it needed for Eternity to feel better, so be it.

"You’re more than enough." Evan tightened his hug around her small form. "Always has. Always will."
