Chapter 69: Ferris Wheel Ride with the Doll

Once they were inside the Ferris wheel pod, they sat directly in front of each other. Evan wanted to ask why Eternity didn’t sit beside him, but the look of utter disappointment on Eternity’s face as the pod ascended made him laugh out loud.

"Not what you were expecting?" He asked, wiping the happy tears forming in his eyes.

Eternity pouted, crossing her arms childishly. "I just didn’t expect it to be... so slow."

"Well, Eternity, Ferris wheels are meant to be slow and gentle," he explained, a teasing glint in his eyes. "It’s all about enjoying the view and the company, not about speed."

Eternity exhaled loudly through her nose, expressing her dissatisfaction.

"I guess I was just used to the earlier rides we tried." She mumbled. "You know, something that got my heart racing and your stomach churning."

"Don’t remind me!" Evan glared. "Just thinking about the rollercoaster ride a while ago is making me nauseous."

"Sorry." Yet she was laughing.

Even though it was often a humiliating experience to have someone—even more so when it was a woman—laugh at him, Evan didn’t seem to mind when it was Eternity. In fact, it made him smile that she was enjoying her misery.

As odd as that may sound.

Evan gestured to the view outside. "For now, let’s make the most of this ride. The view from the top is supposed to be breathtaking."

As the Ferris wheel ascended, everything below seemed so small, almost like they were ants. The setting sun tainted the sky, casting a faint orange glow on everything it touched.

Eternity leaned against the edge of the pod, taking in the view. Her disappointment seemed to have slowly faded the higher the Ferris wheel pod ascended. As they reached the peak of the Ferris wheel, her expression completely softened.

She even let out a soft, breathless ’wow.’

"I thought you were going to kiss me once we reached the top." Evan reminded her teasingly.

Eternity’s head snapped in his direction, and her moss-green eyes, which were now the shade of olive under the orange sky, widened as if she completely forgot about it.

"Oh, sorry, I was just so mesmerized by the view that..." She trailed off, realizing that she was backtracking from her statement earlier.

"I know." Evan smiled gently, raising his hand to cup her cheek. "I know."

Eternity nestled her face on his hand, like a cat attracted to the warmth of a hearth. Then, much to his surprise, Eternity leaned in first to kiss him.

His eyes widened, but soon he found himself closing them as he allowed himself to be enveloped by her.

Whenever they kissed, it was often followed by fucking. But not this one. This kiss had no intention of being a prelude to sex.

It was just as it was.

Just a chaste kiss of her mouth touching his.

Just a kiss that wanted to fulfill the myth.

Just a kiss they hoped could bring them to a love that lasted forever.

As they parted, Evan couldn’t help but smile at the innocence of what transpired between them. When his eyes met Eternity’s, he saw her look at him with moist eyes, as if she would cry any time soon.

Alarmed, Evan wiped the tears that were welling up in her eyes.

"Are you alright?"

Eternity grinned widely. The tears that were threatening to fall a while ago were now freely trickling down her cheeks.

"I’m just happy." She said this, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. "I’m just so happy."

Evan chuckled, leaning in to kiss her again. This time, on the forehead.

"So am I, Eternity." He whispered tenderly. "So am I."

The taxi ride on the way home was silent. Both of them—well, at least Evan assumed it was both of them—were so tired from all the excitement of the day that they couldn’t find the energy to chat casually.

The only thing that served as background noise to their ride was the soft humming of the engine of the taxi and the static-y sound of the car’s radio.

Out of nowhere, Eternity gasped and muttered something under her breath.

Evan cocked an eyebrow. "Are you okay?"

She turned to face him, her eyes glassy and cold for some reason.

"Let’s talk when we get home." She said this, glancing at the driver in front of them.

It must’ve been quite serious because she didn’t want anyone to hear what she wanted to say.

Evan hesitantly nodded, and the ride continued in silence, this time very awkward instead of comforting.

Once they arrived at Evan’s apartment, as soon as he keyed the door, Eternity stormed in.

"Eternity?" He called out. The longer her silence was, the more worried he became. "You didn’t remove your—" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"Edelweiss was the basis of my appearance." Eternity said, turning around to meet his eyes.

Even though it seemed like a question, her tone suggested that it sounded more like a statement.

"I remember," she continued. "That Freiheit said I looked like the girl you were gushing over when you were a teenager."

She looked down at the wooden floorboards, biting her lips.

"It all makes sense now," Her voice quivered, and her hands gripped the fabric of her white dress. "That’s why I felt so inferior the moment I laid my eyes on her. It wasn’t because you’re into redheads. It’s because I was bought simply for looking like her!"

Evan’s was silent for a few seconds. When he finally spoke, he sounded indifferent.

"What exactly do you want me to do?"

Eternity was so taken aback that she literally took a step backward.

"It’s the truth." He admitted. "You heard what Freiheit said? He bought you from the Eternity Woman store because you looked like someone that I fell in love with when I was a teenager.

"But don’t you remember what I told Freiheit?" He reminded her. "I told him I was a teenager."

"And he said that I looked like your type, which was Edelweiss." Eternity fired back.

"And that’s true!" Evan admitted, further infuriating Eternity. "What do you want me to do about it, Eternity? Freiheit chose you for me. I had no say about it. So what exactly are you—"

"Do you think of Edelweiss whenever we have sex?" Eternity shouted, uncharacteristically losing her temper.
