The CEO's Seductive Doll-Chapter 96: The Owner’s Justification to the Doll
"Dad mentioned that he didn’t want to bring the truth to his deathbed, but he ended up surviving the accident," Evan said, considerably calmed down and sobered up. "I wonder if he knew that he wasn’t going to die, he wouldn’t have bothered to tell me. But it doesn’t matter anymore."
Evan shook his head.
"You already know this since I’ve told you this before, but Mr. Royall, the CEO of the company where Dad worked, took responsibility for the accident since it happened within the company’s premises." He recounted, his voice slightly rushing, as if he wanted to get it over with as soon as possible.
"One thing led to another, and I became the adopted son of Mr. Royall, securing my future from a kid from a low socio-economic neighborhood to living in a mansion and being part of the 1% of the elite in society."
Eternity nodded, remembering this part since Evan told her this a month ago. Now that she had a better understanding of Evan’s life, she managed to finally piece things together.
"Even though things turned out well for me in the end, I still can’t shake the fact of what Dolores had done." Evan looked down at his trembling hands, and his face had a pained expression sprawled all over it. "She tricked me... She pretended and tricked me into believing that she was my sister.
"She pretended to be my sister so she could still act like a stupid, rebelling teenager instead of acting like a real mother to me. She pretended to be one so that she could run from her responsibilities to me, her son, so she could do all her vices and bring her strings of lovers into our old house."
Evan looked at Eternity with vulnerable eyes, and his voice softened as he continued.
"It had been years since Dolores’s disappearance, and I was still a child back then so I probably mistook my feelings for her as something else... But imagine how disgusting it was for me to find out that I was attracted to my own mother!"
"I don’t think you felt attraction towards her," Eternity said, sharing her insights into Evan’s situation. "If you were, it was because you were in the dark about your real relationship with your whole family. But I genuinely think it was not attraction or anything remotely romantic that you felt towards her." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Evan didn’t say anything but merely looked at Eternity with a hardened expression as he listened for her to go on.
"She was just the closest thing to an older female figure in your life as a child, so you probably looked up to her as a mother figure... Which turned out to be what she really was. Nothing more, nothing less."
Evan sighed, leaning his shoulder against the glass window.
"Regardless of what nature my feelings for Dolores were, it was still her fault why Dad had his accident." He said this, grimacing at the memory as if it were physically painful for him to remember. "If Dad didn’t stress and blame himself for her disappearance, then he wouldn’t have had his accident."
He paused, seeing Eternity’s scrunched-up expression.
"I know you might be thinking that I’m just pointing fingers at Dolores at this point," Evan said defensively. "But I’m absolutely sure that it was Dolores’s fault that Dad had his accident."
Eternity didn’t say anything and motioned for him to continue, so he did.
"It was noon on the day he had his accident that he gave me a call on our home telephone," Evan started. "Dolores had been missing for a week that day, and Dad was really frantic when he called. He promised me that he’d find Dolores before the day ends... His voice was shaking with guilt, and I could hear through the line that he was close to tears.
"But he didn’t find her, as you already know. Instead, he almost met his end that day." Evan clenched his hands to a fist, gritting his teeth in fury. "Dolores almost got Dad killed... In fact, I think Dolores could’ve given him mercy if Dad actually died that day instead of..."
Evan trailed off, clicking his tongue. He didn’t need to finish his sentence because Eternity already knew what he was trying to say.
There was a moment of silence between them, and no one spoke for a complete minute. Seeing that Evan had nothing more to say, Eternity whispered, "I see."
Evan raised an eyebrow at her, evidently offended.
"After all I’ve told you, that’s all you’re going to say?"
Eternity looked at him with a long, unreadable expression.
"Evan." She spoke after a few seconds. "Do you want to listen to my honest opinion?"
Evan’s lips formed a straight line, as if he were reluctant. But after a bit of consideration, he nodded determinedly. Eternity nodded back at him and began to speak.
"I do understand where you’re coming from," she said, affirming to him that she was able to empathize with his situation. "The truth that the sister you grew up turned out to be your mother was truly a traumatic experience."
"But?" Evan probed. "Judging from your tone, I feel like there’s a big ’but’ there."
Eternity took a deep sigh, as if contemplating her words, which were sure to sting but were definitely honest.
"You don’t need to sugarcoat your words, Eternity," he reassured her. "I asked for your honest opinion for a reason."
Eternity’s emerald eyes widened upon hearing his words. But his words were enough of a confirmation for her to say her real thoughts, so she did.
"But I think your anger has been misplaced all these years." She admitted it, causing Evan to evidently flinch. "And before you get offended," Eternity immediately added, seeing how his body tensed up as soon as she said her sentiments. "I’m not saying that you don’t have the right to be angry. I’m just saying that even Dolores was a victim of harsh circumstances herself."
