Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Playing the Hooligan

Vera Xavier chuckled and explained, "I feel like there’s been a huge discrepancy in the image I have of you lately. I need some time to process it, so I hope you don’t mind."

Nathaniel Nathan looked at her. "What was I like in your eyes before?"

"Brilliant, aloof, and domineering. You were someone to be admired from a distance," Vera Xavier replied.

Nathaniel Nathan frowned. "You’ve listened to too many rumors and lost your own judgment of me."

Vera Xavier gave a bitter laugh. ’In her past life, she had actually suffered a great deal because of him. When he became domineering and fierce, he was terrifying. And when it came to making ruthless decisions, he could scare a person to death.’

Seeing Vera Xavier standing there, lost in thought, Nathaniel Nathan assumed she was thinking about leaving him again.

He reached out, grabbed her hand, and placed it over his heart. "Vera Xavier, don’t listen to what other people say. Use your heart to see me. I might wear all sorts of masks and disguises for others, but the person you see before you is the real me."

Vera Xavier looked into his eyes, which were suppressing an incredibly intense emotion. She didn’t actually know why he liked her, or why he had stopped her from marrying Wesley Kane. But she knew, in her heart, that he genuinely liked her.

So she said softly, "I know."

A light instantly bloomed in Nathaniel Nathan’s eyes. Vera Xavier added, "It’s just that we didn’t know each other very well before. I’ll make an effort to get to know you."

The light in Nathaniel Nathan’s eyes dimmed slightly, but he knew she wasn’t wrong. He gave a slight nod and asked, "While you’re getting to know me, could you give me a little perk first?"

Vera Xavier looked completely baffled, not quite understanding what he meant by "perk." But he had already leaned in and gently kissed her on the lips.

Vera Xavier froze instantly, finally understanding what he meant by his so-called "perk."

Nathaniel Nathan gazed at her warmly and said softly, "I’m very happy you came to see me today."

Vera Xavier’s face flushed red all the way to her ears. She found she couldn’t keep up with him at all and muttered a soft chiding, "Acting like a scoundrel and then playing innocent."

The corners of Nathaniel Nathan’s mouth turned up. "If you think I’m being a scoundrel, you’re welcome to be one right back at me."

Vera Xavier glared at him, but she felt a secret thrill in her heart. ’The man the entire world thinks is aloof is actually a scoundrel in front of you. Even though it’ll take time to process, the feeling really isn’t bad at all.’

Seeing the expression on her face, the smile in Nathaniel Nathan’s eyes deepened. The last few times he’d seen her, she would smile at him, but there was always a sense of distance and guardedness in her expression. It was nothing like the intimate closeness of this glare.

He reached out and opened a door to the side, and a tranquil, sweet scent flooded the room.

Vera Xavier looked up and saw that outside the door was a modest terrace, completely filled with orchids!

They were in full bloom, their elegant blossoms covering the entire terrace!

She asked in astonishment, "You planted these?"

"Mhm," Nathaniel Nathan replied. "I planted them before I went abroad. The housekeeper usually takes care of them. My original reason for coming back this time was actually to see these flowers, but then I ran into you and Wesley Kane getting married."

Vera Xavier simply couldn’t reconcile the Nathaniel Nathan who planted orchids with the one who had crashed her wedding. She cleared her throat and said, "Can I ask why you took me away from the wedding that day?"
