Chapter 84: Chapter 84: His Room

Urbanization hadn’t yet reached Crestfall, so the town didn’t have many original inhabitants. As a result, if anything happened to any family, the news would quickly spread among the local gossips.

On top of that, entertainment options were very simple, and gossip was the most interesting pastime of them all.

Thanks to them, and all because of Vera Xavier’s one visit, half of Crestfall now knew that the aloof and outstanding Nathaniel Nathan had a girlfriend. And his girlfriend wasn’t just anyone—she was a fairy-like beauty, gorgeous beyond belief. As the rumor mill churned, it even transformed Vera into a doctor with extraordinary medical skills.

Of course, Vera didn’t know about any of this yet. She had visited the Nathan family home once that afternoon to save Master Nathan, but she hadn’t taken a close look around. Now, entering with Nathaniel, she realized that while his home wasn’t particularly large, it was exquisitely decorated.

The house was built in the traditional Crestfall style, with a main hall, two rooms on both the east and west sides, a smaller adjoining room, and two more wing rooms in the courtyard.

The main hall housed ancestral tablets. Above the tablets hung a grand central scroll painting, and next to them was a simple, elegant table made of huanghuali wood.

Nathaniel led her directly up to his room on the second floor. His room was sizable and unlike any she had ever seen.

There were antique, carved bookshelves, exquisite ornaments, and several paintings and works of calligraphy on the walls. Incredibly, the shelves even held hand-copied manuscripts from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Beyond that, a long row of classical masterpieces was on display: *The Art of War by Sun Tzu*, *Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government*, the *Tao Te Ching*, the *Classic of Mountains and Seas*, the Four Great Classical Novels, and many others.

On the shelves lining the opposite wall, modern professional books were neatly arranged. There were books on military affairs, politics, firearms, and weaponry—he had it all.

She took a quick glance around. His room was mostly filled with books, a collection vast enough to rival a small library.

She pulled a book from the shelf at random and glanced inside. It was filled with all sorts of annotations and personal reflections. She had been using his books lately, so she was quite familiar with his handwriting.

Nathaniel let her browse while he personally brewed a pot of tea. Soon, the fragrance of tea filled the room.

Vera had always known Nathaniel was exceptional, but she never realized he’d grown up in such a cultured environment. He himself was clearly a man of immense knowledge and taste.

In her past life, she had only seen his cold, domineering side. She knew so little about this part of him.

It seemed this was the first time, in both her past life and this one, that she had truly stepped into his world.

He handed her a cup of tea. "Interested in all this?"

"Have you read all of these?" Vera asked.

"I’ve read most of them," Nathaniel answered simply.

Vera looked at him, a bit surprised. His tone became even more matter-of-fact. "I read very quickly. By the time someone else finishes one book, I might have already finished ten or more. So you don’t need to be so surprised."

Vera looked at him and said, "Nathaniel, I’m realizing I never really knew you at all."

Nathaniel’s gaze slowly settled on her. "Well, I’m right here now. You’re free to get to know me. If there’s anything you want to know, just ask. Of course, if you want to get to know my body, I can cooperate by taking off my clothes."

PFFT! Vera sprayed out the mouthful of tea she had just taken.

She had met all sorts of scoundrels in her past life, but this was the first time she’d seen someone be so shameless with such a straight face.

She scrambled to find a cloth to wipe up the tea she’d spilled. Amusement welled up in Nathaniel’s eyes. "Was what I said that shocking?"
