Chapter 101: One-hundred

The street was bustling with noises and laughing, a continuous stream of people moving up and about in the street to get to their respective destinations.

Children darted between the legs of adult men, chasing one another and laughing loudly.

Carriages and carts clattered in front of the houses with wooden equipment, a few sharp daggers next to it with quilt and cotton covering half of the contents of the wooden carts.

The sound of horses hooves on the ground can be heard, adding to the bustle, the air was heavy with the scent of spices and cooking meat— the hum of chattering cheerful voices yet hushed conversations filled the air like a chorus.

The town of Philipia is full of life despite the unexplainable phenomenon happening outside.

Jannah could hear the loud sounds coming beyond the wooden walls and the elemental wall she built around the town, her eyes watching the small red dots on the map, clamoring and probably banging their bodies against the surface.

She was guessing, but she was right.

The zombies slammed their rotted bodies against the wall, each impact sending a loud bang echoing through the air.

The elemental wall around the wooden walls which served as a barrier between the town and the zombies seemed to barely even notice as the undead pounded against it.

Despite their seemingly best efforts of trying to break through the wall to get to the source of the noises beyond, the zombies were unable to break through, their attacks barely even scratching the surface of the thick, talk, sturdy rock wall.

The wall stood strong against their assault, its unknown power holding firm even as the zombies threw themselves against the wall again and again.

The sounds of their efforts filled the air, the groans and moans punctuated by the thump and crunch of their bodies hitting the wall— it was a frightening noise, the undead creatures relentlessly attacking the barrier that protected the town.

Jannah let out a huff, the bustling noises from the people around her overpowering the sounds those undead made, making her feel a sense of relief.

As long as her people don’t feel any fright or start to go on a frenzy panic then everything should be fine.

"Countess Rafelon!"

From a single shout of greeting, the people around her seem to cease their cheerful laughters and chattering, their eyes shifting from the person they were previously interacting with to Jannah.

Then, their eyes widened and a look of joy spread across all their faces when they realized that it was indeed Jannah— a collective gasp rose from the people.

Oh, no.. Was all Jannah could think of before she was tackled by children, their hands grabbing ahold of arms and waist, giggling and expressing their excitement.

In a moment, the entire place was filled with a symphony of joyous and eager greetings, each person telling her about their happiness and relief at the sight of the person they had been waiting for.

"We’re so happy to see you walking around again, Countess!"

"We wished for your quick recovery, my lady!"

The air was filled with cheerful celebration. Arms raised, the people cried out, calling out to the Countess with enthusiasm and love, happiness and joy etched into their faces.

"It’s such a beautiful sight to see everyone love our lady." Marco commented with a pleased expression, standing beside Jeriel and Princess Huenazia.

Jeriel chuckled and nodded her head in agreement, "She looked shocked though, look at her face. She probably didn’t expect them to be this excited seeing her walking around again."

"We told her about it, but she seems like she didn’t believe us." Princess Huenazia mumbled, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"Trust me, if I told her that they were waiting for her, she wouldn’t believe me either." Jeriel said, a laugh escaping her lips as she smiled fondly at the sight of her big sister looking lost while she got hugged by the kids.

Jannah was let go by the kids and the adults who greeted her after a while. If it weren’t for the crowned princess, they wouldn’t have let her go.

"Thank you." Jannah expressed her gratitude, sighing weakly as she rubbed her temples, "I didn’t expect them to suddenly surround me like that.. Especially when I had a bad impression."

Princess Huenazia blinked and looked at Jeriel, a puzzled look on her eyes, silently asking for context, and that’s what the princess got.

The sounds of construction echoed through the town, the sharp crack of a hammer against wood, the clang of metal hammers on scaffolding with men shouting orders and instructions, their voices carrying through the air and blending with the sound of machines and tools.

Jeriel’s explanation of what happened on their first day in the town turned into a background noise for Jannah, her eyes looking around to survey the town men carrying plants, crates, and carts towards the same direction they were walking to.

The sounds of construction got louder as the three of them got closer to the contraction site.

The clattering and grinding of heavy wood was joined by the sharp sound of hammering with the whole area being alive with the sound of building. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"My bride to be!" Someone called out, voice sounding enthusiastic which made Jannah look ahead of her.

The man with long white hair seems like he was working diligently, the sweat on his brow and the dirt on his face proof of his labor.

Jannah blinked in confusion when Count Nige looked like he was brimming with the excitement of a child with his first crush, calling out to her, a wide grin spreading across his face as he waved his arm cheerfully, his other hand holding a hammer.

Jannah couldn’t help, but scan him— his muscular build, his arms and chest covered with a thin layer of sweat with his hair was long, pure white, and despite the dirt and grime on his face, his golden eyes shone bright.

"Why the hell are you almost half naked?" Jannah questioned the man as soon as she got closer, her eyes staying on his exposed chest longer than she wanted.

"It was hot and I can’t stand my clothes sticking to me while I’m working." The Count smiled playfully, leaning down to her height, "Why? Do you like what you see?"

Before Jannah could answer though, someone had pushed Count Nige’s head aside, "Stop getting too close with Countess Rafelon!"

The man who pushed the Count aside stood tall, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up to reveal the corded muscles of his forearms with the material of his shirt stretched tight, the fabric pulled tight over his broad shoulders.

His face was angular, sharp lines with high cheekbones and a defined jawline. Black hair was slicked back from his face, the slightly damp locks hanging in a messy, untidy fashion that only added to his rugged charm.

"Pweh! Your hand is dirty, Eulicies! Why did you touch my face with your filthy hands?! You’re going to ruin my face!" Count Nige exclaimed, rushing towards the house on the right with an opened door, probably going there to wash his face.

He was about to retort back something harsh, but quickly, he stopped when he realized that he was right in front of Jannah.

He turned to look at her, catching the shift of her eyebrows as she stared after the Count and couldn’t help, but stare for a moment, his face flushing slightly as he drank in the sight of her.

Finally, he called out to her, his voice gentle and polite, despite the obvious affection he felt for her.

"I’m relieved to see you up and about, Countess Rafelon." Duke Eulicies said, making Jannah blink and look away from the house to look at him.

"Thank you for your hard work." Jannah smiled softly at him, expressing her utmost respect and gratitude for the man.

Duke Eulicies immediately turned bright red, his purple eyes staring at the way the Countess’s lips curled up to flash him a beautiful smile, which was too much for his poor heart.

There was that strange beating of his heart again!

It has been that way ever since she had asked him for a sudden meeting back in the capital, like he was yearning and longing for the woman before him— that doesn’t make sense!

Fortunately, Jannah didn’t stay for too long and walked past him, her body barely brushing past him as she made her way to the houses further down to the back gates.

"You should be less obvious." The princess commented, frowning deeply towards the Duke, "It’s unpleasant to see."

You’re one to talk. Jeriel thought to herself, raising an unamused eyebrow at the two people who hold deep feelings towards her big sister.

"Less obvious?" Duke Eulicies asked, a puzzled look on his face, "What are you implying?"

"Exactly what I’m implying, you fool!" Princess Huenazia hissed and jabbed a finger on his sweat-damped chest, making her reel her hand back and wipe it on her pants like she was contaminated by a deadly disease.

"You should be less obvious as well." Duke Eulicies retorted back, his lips curling downward into a frown.

"Now, what are you implying?" Princess Huenazia asked.

Oh, my goodness, these two are hopeless! Jeriel thought exasperatedly, walking past the two to follow after her big sister.
