Chapter 69: Sixty-eight

After that incident, the walk around the perimeter continued.

The woman, still terrified and trembling, is trailing behind the Countess, holding Jannah’s coat’s hem from behind.

Kirie and Duke Eulicies are throwing glances in her way, their eyes narrowed in a unfathomable way that might kill the poor woman, probably wishing for her downfall as well.

"My lady." Anthony called out.

Jannah didn’t stop walking, but moved her head, glancing over her shoulder to look at the knight.

"Are you not tired, my lady? Miss Kirie might be handing you water every now and then, but we’ve been walking around for almost an hour and a half." The knight voiced out his concern for his master’s wellbeing.

"Are you tired?" Jannah shot the question back, stopping in her tracks which made Kirie, Duke Eulicies, and the trailing knights behind them to pause on their tracks.

"No, my lady.. I’m not tired." Anthony answered truthfully, a confused expression crossing his face, "Why did you ask, my lady?"

"No reason." Jannah looked ahead and started walking again, "Unless I hear someone telling me that they’re tired, we will keep walking until we reach the gates."

Which wouldn’t be that long now. Jannah thought as she shot a glance to the floating map, the blinking colored dots catching her attention.

We’re almost back at the gates, but they don’t need to know that. She mused to herself, looking back at the path ahead.

As they walk further, Jannah could see the flickering torches of the gates in the distance and at the same time when she saw it, the sound of the system’s notification went off.

[Ding!]

[The side mission (Clean the remaining of town Rye) is complete!]

Jannah’s eyes flickered as the system gives off the sound of the familiar notification chime. She looks at the text before her eyes, her face breaking into a small smile as she reads the message.

Hello? Sis? Can you hear me? Jannah’s head snaps up at the sound of her little sister’s voice in her mind, her focus shifting instantly as she recognizes the familiar presence in her thoughts.

The tone of her sister’s voice in her mind is soft and calm, yet there’s a hint of cheerfulness and happiness in the way she calls out for her attention.

The sound of her voice is loud and clear, cutting through the noise around Jannah and demanding her attention.

Yeah. I can hear you. What’s up? Jannah’s expression changes as she focuses on their communication link, her mind wholly focused on her little sister as her body goes on autopilot.

Did you get something from that system thing? I wasn’t sure if it will work, but remember when we said that we’ll let the women of Rye decide the fate of the Baron and his men? Jeriel sounds like was bored, voice neutral and calm.

Yes? Did the ladies finish them off themselves? Jannah thought, musing her assumptions.

Yep. Jeriel confirmed with a pop by the end of her answer, they were quite happy that you let them do it and asked me if they can meet you later.

Jannah chuckled as the corner of her lips curled up into a warm smile, the sound coming from her made Kirie and Duke Eulicies glance at her, their eyes catching a glimpse of her smile before it vanished.

What did you say? Jannah kept her eyes ahead, not wanting to stumble over something as she converse with her little sister.

I told them that we’ll let Merlot fetch them if you’re free. Jeriel said with a happy chirp.

That’s good. Jannah was happy with her little sister’s decision, anyways, we’re almost back to the gates, meet me there. I’m going to go around the town once more and I’m taking you with me.

Okay! Jeriel didn’t ask why was she needed to be with Jannah, she feels safe and happy enough to not question her big sister about anything.

With her conversation ending, Jannah blinked, going back to her current situation and reality.

Just in time for her to step in front of the closed gates, and just in time for her to hear the collective sighs of relief from the prisoners behind the knights.

The town gates were made of thick, sturdy wood so with a loud creak, the gates began to swing open, revealing the dimly lit town beyond.

The Countess spared a fleeting glance at the people behind the gates before stopping in her tracks, her focus solely on the task at hand.

"I’m going around once more." Jannah announced to her people, turning around to look at them, she could see the look of bewilderment on the prisoners’ faces and the nod of acknowledgement of her knights.

"Give them axes and chainsaws, have them cut down some trees over there. Make them go for it until me and my little sister comes back." Jannah told the knights, pointing her finger at the trees in front of the town’s wall.

"If they decided to make another complain, don’t give them food later." Jannah’s voice was loud and firm, her eyes squinting into a glare, "I don’t want people in my town who won’t work or contribute something. You have to work to earn your keep."

With that said, her gaze flickered over to the terrified woman who still hasn’t let go of her coat.

"Can someone please escort this lady back to her cell? Give her something to work on." Jannah said to no one in particular, but one of the knights moved.

"I’ll take her back inside, my lady." Dreidel spoke as he walks towards the woman and grabs her, he turned to Jannah momentarily and lowered his head, "Have a safe trip, Countess."

"Thank you." Jannah gave him a pat on the back as he took the woman away, watching him walk through the gate.

She looked away from the knight, her concentration momentarily broken by the sight of a familiar person.

There, in the distance, was her little sister, running through the town towards her. Jeriel’s face was filled with joy and excitement, making it obvious that she’s eager to know what Jannah will show her.

Jannah waited silently and patiently, looking away momentarily from her little sister to look at the knights who were leading the prisoners to the tree lines.

Half of them have move towards the gates. She guessed that they’ll probably go to the blacksmith shop to get the tools she told them to give to the prisoners.

"Would you mind if I come with you and Lady Jeriel around the town once more?" The Duke’s voice had cut through the peaceful silence, making Jannah look away from the knights and look at him.

"I don’t mind." Jannah looked away from him, her gaze flickering back to her little sister, who she saw had stopped running to get a quiver full of arrows from Marco.

"I also want to come, my lady." Kirie spoke up, clutching Jannah’s water bottle tightly.

"Sure." The Countess agreed, not paying them much mind and just letting them do whatever they want.

The Duke and the maid brightened up, glancing at each other momentarily before turning away, basking in the sweet sensation of being permitted to be close to the person they like.

The Countess watched her little sister turn away from the head butler and starts walking towards her again.

Jeriel’s face was cheerful, her expression carefree and her movements energetic. She’s hugging the quiver close to her chest with her hands holding Jannah’s bow.

Jannah’s lips curled upwards into a small smile as she watched her little sister approach, her body still and waiting for Jeriel to reach her.

"Sis!" Jeriel called out, running past the gates and skidded into a stop, halting in front of Jannah, "I got your bow and arrows. I figured that you didn’t bring it so I went back to your room."

The white haired noble lady held out the bow to her big sister and Jannah gladly took it from her hands as she says, "Thank you."

"Yeah, no problem." Jeriel hummed.

Jannah slipped the bow to her shoulders and wrapped the quiver’s strong around her waist, "I’ll tell you something as we go around." 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"Lead the way." The Countess’s little sister gestured to their right, smiling.

Thus the start of their inspection around the town with Duke Eulicies and Kirie hot in her trail, keeping a short distance to give the sisters some privacy.

"So this is what happened.."

The Countess and her little sister walked along the same path that Jannah previously walked on with her knights, her arm slung casually around her little sister’s shoulders.

As they walked very slowly, the woman told her little sister what had happened.

With each word and emphasis, the little sister’s eyesbrows shots up until it reaches her hairline, bewildered by Jannah’s words.

Jeriel listened intently, her head nodding alomg as Jannah continued to list off the things that happened. She spoke quietly, her voice low and calm as she filled her little sister in on the encounter she had with the zombie.

As the two walked, their words filled the quiet night air, the atmosphere heavy with the weight of conversation.

The comfortable atmosphere between the Rafelon sisters are noticable. Duke Eulicies and Kirie could see how Jeriel looks up at her big sister and how Jannah treasures her little sister.

However, despite the sight before them, Jannah’s words had stopped not just them, but Jeriel as well.

"There’s a great chance those zombies will wake up if their surrounding was noisy."
