The Countess Lives Twice in the Apocalypse-Chapter 70: Sixty-nine
"We’ll talk about what to do about those zombies later, okay?" Jannah assured them before they could react, smiling in their direction.
"But, my lady—"
"It’s okay, Kirie." Jannah cuts off the maid with a shushing motion of her hand, "We’ll discuss it later."
The tone of her voice was firm, leaving no room for disagreement or rebuttal. Duke Eulicies and Kirie looked at Jeriel, hoping to that it makes Jannah think of dealing with the zombies right now, but Jeriel merely looked away.
If her big sister said that they’ll talk about it later then they’ll talk about it later.
Jeriel kept her head turn away from the two, staring blankly in the dark and looming forest beside them.
"Anyways." Jannah spoke up and intentionally breaks the silent tension, "I’m going to build a wall around the town. I’ll use the same thing I used to sneak inside Rye."
"Wouldn’t that put a strain on your body?" Jeriel raised an eyebrow at Jannah, obviously not happy with her decision.
"..Yes." Jannah nodded her head hesitantly, "Probably? But I’ll be fine. You’re here with me, right? I’m sure you wouldn’t let anything bad happen to me."
"That’s true." Jeriel agreed with a resigned sigh, "Alright, do what you want to do, but don’t overdo it, okay?"
Jannah smiled, playfully placing a hand in her chest and lowered her head, "Yes, captain."
"Drink water first, my lady." Kirie pleaded, handing Jannah her water bottle with the lid already off, "Just to be sure."
"Okay." Jannah took the water from the maid gently, placing it over her lips and immediately chugged down the liquid in small gulps, and when she’s done, she handed it back to Kirie.
The Countess shot them a reassuring glance, nodding her head in their direction as she walk towards the wall.
Jannah stood just outside the town, her body straight, a determined and serious expression on her face. Her mind was filled with one thing— to build a wall around the town to double their security and safety.
It was a great labor that she was about to take on and she’s sure that it will take toll on her body later on, but the thought of her little sister sleeping peacefully at night without worrying about the zombies is enough to strengthen her resolve.
"Elemental wall." She muttered the name of the skill, her eyes closed as she began to concentrate.
The earth vibrated slightly beneath her feet as if it knew what was to come. The ground begins to trembles— stones, rocks, dirt and gravels begin to shake, shifting and scraping against the grass.
The rocks slowly rise, floating up in midair like a swarm of bees, twirling and spinning in a confusing dance. The rocks and stones begin to link and connect, each one fitting seamlessly with the others.
Jannah’s back is straight, her face stern with focus, staying balanced as the ground continues to shake.
The night is still around her, the only sound was the low rumbles of the ground. She stares straight ahead at the land before her, anxiety coursing through her veins.
Finally, after a while of the stones and rocks dancing mid-air, the earth stirs beneath her feet, the earth itself responding to her quiet command.
Stones and rocks began to rise from the ground, lifting into the air and slowly beginning to form a solid wall. She had to crouch down as the wall continues to rise, avoiding of falling while the wall rumbles quite roughly.
The air was thick with something heavy, the power radiating from the Countess in waves. Without words, she directed the rocks and stones with her mind, shaping them to form a protective wall in front of the wooden wall of the town.
She crouched in the same place, still and quiet. She did not move a single muscle as she continued to make the wall rise, the energy flowing through her fingertips.
Jeriel, Duke Eulicies, and Kirie watched her with wide eyes, amazed and awestruck as the wall began to grow up from the ground.
The earth itself was responding to the Countess, rising in obedience to her will and they could only watch with bated breath as Jannah’s creation took shape.
The wall grew and grew, its length slowly becoming on par with the town’s wall.
"Holy crap." Jeriel murmured, her amazement and admiration towards her big sister surpassing the sky above.
Although, the said big sister wondered how she will create a wall around the town.
[Ding!]
Jannah’s eyes flickered to the system, sweat forming on her forehead and dripping down to her cheeks, her attention getting divided for a moment.
[The skill, Elemental Wall, leveled up.]
[The skill now covers a wider area and will able to withstand more damage, taking on other shapes and forms. The casting of this skill will be easier to summon and maintain, requiring less energy and focus of the player.]
Jannah didn’t have to read the description twice before she bolted.
"Sis?!" Jeriel’s startled and shocked scream echoed in the cold air of the night, chasing after Jannah when she suddenly started running.
The Countess raced across the surface of the newly created wall, her feet flying as she pushed herself to run on a steady pace. The wall rose beneath her, the earth itself rising to form a surface for her to run on.
Jannah’s speed was incredible, her legs moving at an impossible rate as she ran above the rising wall.
As the Countess ran, the wall continued to rise, the very ground moving at her command.
The wall’s height kept pace with her movements, rising faster and faster as Jannah ran, the wall continued to rise below her in response to catch her before her feet could touch the solid surface of her creation.
"Countess!" Duke Eulicies called out to Jannah, his own heart beating fast at the sight of the noble woman running on a moving ground.
"My lady!" Kirie shrieked, eyes wide in fright as she chased Jannah, heart thumping inside her chest.
"Sis!" Jeriel screamed, her pace quickened as Jannah gets faster.
The three of them has one thought running through their mind: what if the wall doesn’t rise up on time for Jannah to land on?!
"My lady?!"
It seems that the three of them weren’t the only one who saw Jannah running with a rising ground chasing her pace, rising beneath her feet. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
Marco and the other awake knights were amazed, their eyes glued to their master as she ran, her black hair was free, flowing, spilling over her shoulders in a long, cascading waterfall, dancing mid-air along with the wind.
Her face is pale and fine featured, her expression can’t be seen from the distance, but despite running, Jannah moves with a quick, sure-footed grace.
They watched as the wall rose with her, keeping pace with her incredible speed as she raced along the top of the wall.
The Countess herself seemed oblivious to the spectacle that she was creating, her focus completely on the task at hand. The wall continued to grow taller and wider, the very earth obeying her will.
She run around the town, creating a thick, rock-solid, and sturdy wall to protect the people inside it.
Jannah glanced at the map as she continue to run, her feet pounding against the surface of the wall as the earth rose beneath her strides.
She saw the green dot almost reaching town’s gates which made her huff out. Her own speed was incredible, taking her by surprise, her body seemingly tireless as she ran.
However, eventually, her pace slowed, her breathing labored as she slowed to a stop.
The wall, too, slowed, its rise beginning to slow to a halt. The Countess stood on the top of the wall, breathing heavily as she looked out over the town.
The wall itself seemed to heave a sigh of relief, the unknown source of energy that had been flowing through it slowly dissipating.
The aftermath of her impulsive action had hit her in a blink of an eye. One moment she was fine, the next moment, she was exhausted, her body shaking lightly with fatigue.
The effort it had taken to bring the wall to life had drained her, the energy that had flowed through her leaving her depleted.
Jannah felt drained, her mind fuzzy, her body shaking, with her throat as dry as their neighboring kingdom on the south. Jannah collapsed to her knees, her lips agape as she heave with the effort to fill her lungs with air.
"Countess Rafelon!"
A call rang out in the air.
The familiar deep and feminine voice managed to break through the haze of Jannah’s mind, making her slowly raise her head to look up.
Jannah blinked, trying her best to focus, her eyes meeting a pair of sunset colored eyes.
The crowned princess stood on the watch tower, her face was filled with worry, her eyes wide with concern.
"Countess!" She called out to Jannah once more, her voice soft and worried.
Jannah, on the other hand, was surprised to see the princess standing on the watch tower.
Her eyes widened, her mind buzzing with questions. She was looking at the map, how come she didn’t see the princess’s name on it?
However, before she could dwell too much on that thought, her eyes fluttered shut as exhaustion overtook her.
She tried to fight it off, to stay conscious, but the world around her faded, and she was left in the darkness of unconsciousness.
