The Countess Lives Twice in the Apocalypse-Chapter 71: Seventy
The knights that was patrolling the south gate was the first ones to fall prey for the relentless onslaught of the upcoming horde.
A man stumbled to the gate, his movement unstable and jittery.
Unaware of the danger the man would bring, they approached him with good intentions, voicing out their concerns.
The said man was pale, his skin was a unsettling shade of grey. The man’s clothing is tattered and filthy— the hems and some part of his clothing is ripped and stained.
He has a noticable injury in his neck and arm, but there’s no blood dripping from it.
The knights saw him as a beggar because of his tattered clothing, and the wounds? Only commoners are the ones who won’t be able to afford good medicine to treat their injuries.
Which is why, the knights took pity on the man.
"Sir, would you like to receive treatment?" One of the knights approached him, a worried expression crossing his face, "The knights on patrol have brought in extra medicines. We can treat your injuries."
"Grr.." The man’s only response was a growl as he stumbled forward, his pale and slightly discolored arms reaching out at nothing in front of him.
The knight’s eyebrows furrowed, stepping in front of the man, "Are you okay, sir?"
That’s when the knight saw it. The man’s sunken eyes and blank expression was the first thing he noticed before he finally had the chance to inspect his overall look.
The eyes of the man was empty and dull, their sockets are hollow and lacking any sign of intelligence, milky and white— unfocused.
His mouth hangs open which shows a row of uniquely sharpened teeth.
"Sir? I think you need immediate trea—"
The knight, who was merely worried, suddenly got grabbed by the man. His unfocused milky eyes are now set on him, he was a second too late to get away from the grip of the man and found himself bitten by the neck.
"Ackkk!" The knight cried out.
The man’s set of sharp teeth sink deeper into the knight’s throat, blood spraying out of the newly teared wound, making him choke on his own blood.
That was the start of the chaos.
As the a few numbers of zombies swarmed through the capital’s gates, both commoners and nobles were left confused by the scene as they stood there, watching those creatures attack the people around them.
Those unfortunate enough to fall to the zombies experienced a terrifying and brutal attack, the zombies had lunged at their victims with a frenzied hunger for blood, their jaws and teeth tearing through flesh and tissue of the living.
"KYAAAAA!"
Witnessing the first attack by a couple numbers of unknown creatures, their confusion quickly turned to horror. They watched in terror as the zombie lunged at its victim, tearing at their flesh with its jaws.
"RUN!"
It was just one word, but it was effective to send people in frenzy.
"Monsters! Monsters!"
"Help me! Help! KYAAA!"
The people would be filled with fear and panic, as they realized that these were not ordinary people they were witnessing, but unknown creatures that was looking for live victims.
The zombies used their teeth to bite and tear at the flesh of their victims, their mouths stained with flesh and blood. They attacked without restraint, their eyes bloodshot and their movements fast and erratic.
Once the zombies got close enough, they will lunge at their victims and use their teeth to tear at and rip apart any soft flesh they could reach.
The capital was plunged into chaos as the fast and aggressive zombies continued to swarm through the streets.
The people and the knights scrambled to escape the capital, pushing and dragging people around them to be the prey instead of themselves, but despite their attempts of making someone else die, the zombies would be hot on their trail, their relentless pursuit making their escape seem impossible.
The air is filled with the cries of the dying and the growls of the undead as the capital fell completely under the control of the unknown creatures.
A few buildings collapsed, fires breaking out with the once-peaceful streets covered with struggling and screaming victims, bright and glistening red liquids covering the solid path beneath them.
The air is thick with smoke and the ground was slick with blood.
The citizens and knights fought for their lives, the sound of whistling point of arrows as it flies to its target and the screams of the dying cutting through the air like a knife.
The bustling and lively capital of the Starlian Kingdom had become battlefield in a blink of an eye— the air is thick with the stench of sweet metallic scent, and the only sound to be heard is the terrified screams of the citizens.
There are few signs of life left, but those that remain are fighting for survival.
"Those are our people!" Huenazia cried out, her tears streaming down her face as her little brothers dragged her out of the gates, heading north.
"Not anymore!" Hanzo grunted out, repositioning his grip on his sister’s waist, tightening his hold on her so she wouldn’t have the chance to jump off the horse.
"Let go of me, Hanzo!" Huenazia hissed, smacking her little brother’s back, "I need to save as many as I can!"
"I can’t lose you to those things!" Hanzo growled at his big sister as he glared at the path ahead, "I’d rather lose them than lose my only family! We already lost our siblings! I can’t lose you, too!"
His words seem to sink in to her brain, her orange irises widened slightly, more tears rolling down her cheeks. She’s torn between wanting to save the people of her kingdom and wanting to be alive for her now and only brother.
"I’m so sorry." Huenazia whispered, letting more tears fall as she watched the flickering fire beyond the capital’s wall disappear from her sight as they got farther and farther.
In the end, she chose her little brother’s wishes than her own.
She can’t leave Hanzo alone, they have watched their servants and very own father eat the people inside the castle.
Huenazia doesn’t know how, but the former ruler of the kingdom was let out of his binds and had got out of his bedroom.
She was a little too late to be notified of what was happening and only found out about it when she decided to visit the youngest Mercuria— her baby sister.
However, the sight before her had crushed her plan. Her father, the former king, had his hands buried inside of the youngest’s stomach.
The sight alone had left her shocked and terrified. If it weren’t for Hanzo then she’s sure that she would have let her father attack her, too. How could she let that monster roam the castle’s wall?
She wished that she had listened to Countess Rafelon’s advice and killed the king, but she didn’t.
As the two runs across the corridor of the castle to get out.
They passed by the servants that was supposedly locked up in the castle’s cellar— the chains that should be binding them on the wall are nowhere to be seen in their limbs.
Huenazia could only watch as the zombies’ bodies collided with the other servants, knocking them off their feet and making them fall to the ground, the zombies’ teeth and jaws lunging for the vulnerable flesh on the servants’ neck, arms, face, legs, and chest.
"No, Hanzo!" The princess cried out when the third prince forced her to ride the horse, "We need to help them!"
However, the third prince has already decided to save the crown princess and got on the horse, immediately kicking the stirrups to make the horse start running.
The princess was in tears, her heart breaking at the sight of her people suffering.
She watched as the zombies charged at the citizens with surprising speed and ferocity, their mouths wide open, and their hands reaching out, ready to tear flesh and bone alike.
"No, no, no, no!" Huenazia cried out, sobbing loudly, her hands clenched into a fist as she watched the castle’s walls disappear in the distance.
The knights who stayed behind was fighting off the undead servants that she didn’t know was bitten, but the obvious missing chunk of flesh on their limbs, faces, or neck were enough for her to know what happened. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
She wanted nothing more than to stay and help them, but her little brother was insistent on taking her out of the capital.
He held the reigns of her mare, pulling tightly and urging the animal to move away from the burning capital.
"Please." The crown princess pleaded, trying to stop her little brother, but he was adamant.
"Please." The third prince returned the word, the desperation and fear in his voice is evident which told her that her safety was more important than anything.
She could see the unshed tears in his eyes, guilt and fear raw in his gaze, and she knew that he was afraid, but decided to be brave to bring the two of them to safety.
So, she shut her mouth, her lips quivering as more warm and desperate tears rolled down her cheeks, burying her face on her little brother’s shoulders, seeking comfort from the sudden turns of events.
The atmosphere between the prince and princess was heavy with desperation, their emotions running high.
The air was thick with the sounds of the burning capital, the sounds of flames and collapsing buildings filling their ears as they go further up the north.
