Chapter 107: A strange man appeared

"Demon Venerable Shen!" Kong Xun knocked three times and immediately flung the door open as he entered the room and called out to Jie Fu Lian hurriedly, "There has been some suspicious movement in the southern province!"

Jie Fu Lian immediately frowned as he heard this and glared at the man, feeling annoyed as he scolded, "Did I not warn you about disturbing me for unimportant nonsense?"

For the last three days, Jie Fu Lian had been staying holed up in his room, reading the book titled ’The thrilling love story of immortal Xue Lan’ and he had specifically warned everyone inside the demon king’s palace not to disturb him under any circumstance.

Due to the fear of annoying him, not a single soul dared to disturb him. That is, until a minute ago.

"I apologize for disturbing you but I’m afraid this is important!" Kong Xun spoke up, sounding extremely worried.

For the first time, he was not trembling from his fear of the demon king and this caused Jie Fu Lian to believe that something serious might have happened.

He immediately closed the book and sat up straight as he looked at Kong Xun and asked, "What happened?"

"Two days ago, a strange man appeared in the nameless town of the southern province. He bought more than eight thousand stone statues of the great demon venerable and immortal Jie Fu Lian."

Jie Fu Lian frowned as he heard this, not understanding how this could be considered worrying news.

"He then traveled to the southern capital and has been searching for a cultivation manual called ’the art of controlling spirits."

Jie Fu Lian’s eyes immediately widened in shock.

"I tried to find out who it was but..." Kong Xun gulped as he hesitated a little before he revealed, "Many witnesses have been saying that the strange man resembles the cultivator called Hua Tianshu."

Jie Fu Lian’s mind immediately went blank and he didn’t know if he wanted to laugh or not.

"Demon Venerable Shen, what should we do?"

Jie Fu Lian sighed as he heard this question. For a moment there, he had been a little worried but as soon as he heard Hua Tianshu’s name, he immediately felt relieved and wondered what the man was trying to do.

"Don’t do anything," Jie Fu Lian replied as he shook his head in disappointment and reassured, "He won’t cause any trouble."

Kong Xun’s eyebrows creased together as he heard this and he immediately felt unhappy as he argued, "But he has already burnt down eight of your concubine’s houses! How can you say that he won’t cause any trouble?"

"It’s best if you do not dwell on the past," Jie Fu Lian cleared his throat as he defended Hua Tianshu and spoke, "I trust him and I believe he has a plan for everything."

"Demon Venerable Shen, the more I think about it, the more I feel like Hua Tianshu is an odd man. First, he was trying to lure out Jie Fu Lian using the Changbo sword, then he was trying to crawl into your bed and now he is buying your stone statues and looking for a fake cultivation manual. How can I not be worried?"

Jie Fu Lian couldn’t help but want to laugh as he heard this. He could understand why these actions seemed so bizarre to Kong Xun who had no idea that the demon king sitting before him was not even the real one.

"Kong Xun, If I trust him, so should you."

Kong Xun frowned but refused to give a positive response to that.

"Leaving that aside, have you heard of that fake cultivation manual?"

"Eh?"

"The fake version of the art of controlling spirits," Jie Fu Lian explained as he asked, "Have you heard about it?"

Kong Xun thought about it for a minute and spoke, "I have heard of it but It does not work."

Jie Fu Lian’s ears perked up with interest, "So it exists?"

"Well, there have been many fake cultivation manuals being distributed here and there under that name but they were all meant to scam people. If you follow those manuals, you’ll hardly gain anything."

"Are they sold in the demon realm or the mortal realm?"

"They were mostly sold in the demon realm but after you banned their production, almost all of them have been destroyed and the remaining few have gone missing. I believe a few might still be found in the mortal realm."

"I banned their production?" Jie Fu Lian repeated with a frown as he asked, "Why did I do that?"

Kong Xun cluelessly blinked as he heard this question and silently looked at Jie Fu Lian with a confused expression.

"Demon Venerable Shen, how can I know why you did that...? You just told me to destroy them and I listened to your orders."

Jie Fu Lian’s eyebrows creased together and no matter how he thought about it, he simply could not understand why Shen Fang would get involved in the production of a fake cultivation manual.

"Was there anyone who managed to practice the cultivation manual and actually gained the ability to summon and control spirits?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Kong Xun shook his head as he spoke, "As long as I know, there were many who tried but there was no one who was successful. In order to successfully cultivate that manual, you’d first need to be a half-demon and immortal Jie Fu Lian was the only one who was known to be a half-demon."

"What if a demon tries to cultivate it?"

Kong Xun suddenly laughed as he spoke, "Demon Venerable Shen, it is impossible. Demons don’t have spiritual Qi nor can they control it."

"Then what about an orthodox cultivator?"

Kong Xun shook his head as he firmly spoke, "It has to be a half-demon. The art of controlling spirits requires both spiritual Qi and demonic Qi. Whether it be a demon or an orthodox cultivator, they can only control one of the two, and hence, it is impossible for them to succeed."

Jie Fu Lian couldn’t help but frown as he heard this. He had already been aware of this but he still asked only to confirm his knowledge.

Now that Kong Xun had given him the confirmation that he was looking for, he knew that the one who had pretended to be him and killed Bai LiuXian was surely a half-demon. This made it both easy and hard to find the man.

It was easy because he was the only half-demon left, but at the same time, it was difficult because nobody knew such a half-demon existed.

With a sigh, Jie Fu Lian waved his hand as he spoke, "That’s enough. You can go now."

"But Demon Venerable Shen, what should we do with Hua Tianshu?"

"Didn’t I tell you to ignore him?"

Kong Xun frowned as he heard this and argued, "We should at least have someone follow him."

Jie Fu Lian glared at the man and firmly spoke, "Don’t bother with such useless things. If in the next two days, he doesn’t leave, I’ll personally go and meet him."

Kong Xun nodded his head, feeling a little relieved as he heard this.

"Now leave."

"I apologize for disturbing you," Kong Xun bowed his head and immediately left the room.

Jie Fu Lian once again opened the book that he was reading and flipped a few pages.

On a certain page of the book, there was a photo of Xue Lan painted by an unknown artist.

With a soft expression on his face, the man in the painting was looking at the red spider lily that he was holding. The vibrantly painted red spider lily stood out in the painting that was mostly painted with black ink.

Standing extremely close, next to him was another man who had his hands crossed behind his back. He was a head taller than Xue Lan and his face was hidden behind a blot of black ink—as if even the painter’s imagination came short when painting his face.

The two were standing in a field of burnt trees that were covered in snow. Overall, the painting was beautiful but it really gave off a melancholic feeling.

With just a glance, Jie Fu Lian could tell that the one looking at the flower was none other than Xue Lan and the man who stood beside him was the demon that was rumored to have been Xue Lan’s lover.

Jie Fu Lian looked at the painting for a long time and with every passing second, the expression on his face seemed to be turning more and more complicated.

As he looked at the painting of Xue Lan, he felt that the man in the painting looked familiar, but at the same time, he could swear that he had never met such a man before this.

Xue Lan’s face was certainly not an ordinary face that could be easily forgotten. His face had a touch of youth and the elegance of an immortal. Jie Fu Lian had met a lot of handsome men but none could compare to this man in the painting. If Jie Fu Lian had ever met him before, he would have surely remembered it.

The more he looked at the painting, the more he felt a sense of familiarity.
