Chapter 155: What stopped you?

"When Yu Wei died, I promised myself one thing," Jin Shifeng sighed as she spoke, "As I stood in front of her grave, I promised myself that I’d avenge her. I thought if I did that, she would come back, but as time passed, I realized how naive I had been. It didn’t matter if I punished her murderer or not. In the end, she was already gone from this world and would never come back. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, I felt helpless and could not do anything. Unlike your case, there was no miracle for me. Even if I wanted to summon her back in another body, I could not do it."

Jin Shifeng sighed as she lowered her head in guilt and continued, "I cannot put myself in your shoes but if I could, I’m sure I would have also experienced the same feeling. If Yu Wei were to suffer because of me... I’m sure I would have hated it more than anything else in the world."

"What stopped you?"

"Hmm?"

"What stopped you from killing the master of curses? Why did you decide to help him instead?"

Jin Shifeng thinly smiled as she heard this question and sighed as she took a minute to think about it before she answered, "I think I missed my chance."

Hua Tianshu tilted his head in confusion as he heard this and Jin Shifeng continued, "There was a time when I could kill him but I didn’t do it and later on, that chance never came again. It’s a bit complicated, but if I were to sum up my situation in a single sentence... I would say that it was ’fear’ that controlled me. I was afraid of losing my freedom, afraid of going back to that place where I couldn’t be myself. I was scared of losing the things that I had managed to gain."

"Was it worth it?" Hua Tianshu asked, looking genuinely curious.

Jin Shifeng smiled as she heard this and shook her head as she spoke, "Not at all. I was only deluding myself the entire time. I didn’t dare accept the fact that I had made a stupid decision. If I had accepted my mistake, I was afraid I’ll live in regret for the rest of my life... I was saving myself from living a miserable life filled with regret."

"Now, I know a way through which you can help him," Jin Shifeng sighed as she immediately changed the topic, "He’s in a lot of pain right now but I’m sure he can survive. You can lessen his pain by sharing it but I’m not sure if you’ll be able to handle it."

"I’ll do it!" Hua Tianshu exclaimed, without even bothering to think it through.

"It will be very painful," Jin Shifeng warned.

"I do not care," Hua Tianshu firmly replied, "If it’s for him, I can bare it."

Jin Shifeng felt as if she had asked a useless question.

"In that case, I’ll help you."

Hua Tianshu nodded his head.

"Your primordial spirit would be entering his mind. I do not know what you’ll find in there but even if you meet a monster that attacks you, make sure you do not harm it in any way. Everything inside his mind is a part of him and if damaged, he’ll be in more pain than he is already experiencing. Your goal is to find Jie Fu Lian in there. I do not know what form or shape he would be in but it’s your job to identify him and once you do, protect him and bring him back with you."

Hua Tianshu’s eyebrows creased together as he heard this and he questioned, "My primordial spirit?"

"That’s right," Jin Shifeng gave a nod as she confirmed, "He is not the only one in danger. If you decide to go in there, you’ll be in danger as well so make sure to protect yourself. If your primordial spirit gets hurt, it might even cost you your life."

Hua Tianshu gulped as he heard this but didn’t seem to doubt his decision.

"I’ll do it," Hua Tianshu firmly spoke as he made up his mind, "I’ll save him."

His determination moved Jin Shifeng, who couldn’t help but hope for him to succeed and come back safely.

Jin Shifeng touched Hua Tianshu’s forehead with her two fingers and as soon as her finger came in contact with the man’s skin, Hua Tianshu passed out.

Jin Shifeng closed her eyes and chanted something under her breath before she extracted Hua Tianshu’s primordial spirit from his body and sent it over to Jie Fu Lian’s mind.

The process took only a few minutes and as soon as it was done, Jin Shifeng realized that she had forgotten to mention something very important.

With a worried expression plastered on her face, Jin Shifeng quietly looked at the time, counting how long it would take for the two to wake up.

Hua Tianshu only had an hour at most... If he failed to return after an hour, his primordial spirit would not be able to return to his body.

Jin Shifeng no longer had a way of warning the man and could only pray for him to realize it on his own and come back before the one hour was up.

.

.

.

.

A void of darkness.

Curses and whispers ringing in your ear.

Emptiness as far as the eyes could see.

"Die."

"Just Die, you monster."

"You heartless scum!"

"Traitor!"

"Burn them."

"How dare you?!"

"You’ll never be forgiven!"

"Pay for your sins!"

"How could you?!"

"Kill them."

"You bastard!"

The whispers and curses continued and each voice contained deep hatred and wrath that Hua Tianshu was unfamiliar with.

Hua Tianshu frowned as he immediately realized that something was off. There was no way this could be Jie Fu Lian’s mind. It was too dark, too cold, and too miserable...

Hua Tianshu gulped as he made a guess.

This was not Jie Fu Lian’s mind, it was the Demon King’s mind.

For a second there, Hua Tianshu panicked a little. If this was really the demon king’s mind then Jie Fu Lian was probably in grave danger, and the situation was going to be equally as dangerous for Hua Tianshu as well.

Hua Tianshu immediately looked around in search of Jie Fu Lian, but even if he was desperate, how could it be that easy to find the man in a void of endless darkness?

The more Hua Tianshu walked, the louder the voices got. There came a point where Hua Tianshu had to use his hands to cover his ears but even that did not help him in shutting out the voices.

"You heartless monster!"

"May the heavens make you feel the same pain!"

"Just kill them all."

"Murderer!"

"May your children rot to death because of you!"

"Burn them."

"I hope you suffer!"

"End it all."

"You thief!"

"How dare you?"

"You worthless piece of sh*t!"

"Die!"

"Leave!"

"Run away!"

"I’ll burn you alive!"

The voices were completely random, sometimes it was the voice of a young man, sometimes it was the voice of an old woman, sometimes it was the voice of a child, and other times, the voice of a mother who had lost her child.

The curses were also pretty random. Some told him to run away, some told him to burn everything, some told him to go and die while others just screamed out of frustration and hatred. From the voices alone, Hua Tianshu could not understand anything.

He had no idea what kind of life the demon king had lived but he was sure it was not a good one. The Demon King had been known for his ruthless personality so it didn’t really come as a shock that so many people would curse at him and want him dead. However, it was still quite shocking to know that the voices of those people still lingered in the demon king’s mind...

For a second there, Hua Tianshu wondered what the demon king had really been like... He wondered if the man ever regretted the things he did...

If this was the Demon King’s mind... Had that man been living in guilt all his life?

Had he been remembering the curses of the people that hated him and constantly living in this miserably lonely world where he constantly blamed himself..?

As soon as this question crossed Hua Tianshu’s mind, he couldn’t help but wonder whether Jie Fu Lian was also living in such a world.

Suddenly, there was a sound of a woman laughing, and this time, Hua Tianshu could actually see the woman at a distance.

Without thinking any further, Hua Tianshu immediately ran towards the woman whose face was still a little unclear. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

When he got close enough, he saw a particular scene that he did not recognize. There was a beautiful woman laughing as she sat on a tree branch and looked down at a man who was holding out his arms, waiting to catch the woman.

Hua Tianshu did not recognize the woman but he surely recognized the man in a heartbeat. It was the Demon King, Shen Fang.
