Chapter 64: The demon king is targeting you.

"It seems that the demon king is targeting you."

"Why would he do that? I just came out of seclusion. I don’t even know him."

"Does he need a particular reason?" Hua Meifang questioned back and Jie Fu Lian fell silent, "In any case, you have caught his interest. Perhaps it is because of the cultivation progress that you have shown in the last three years or maybe it’s because although you don’t know him, he knows you."

Jie Fu Lian felt a shiver run down his spine as he heard that latter sentence.

He didn’t want the Demon King to know him.

Being known by the Demon King wasn’t a blessing, it was the greatest misfortune one could have.

"There is also a chance that the demon was lying," Hua Tianshu spoke up as he commented.

Hua Meifang nodded her head, "There’s a chance but it is unlikely. That demon was a bit dumb so I don’t think he would be capable of lying so naturally."

"So what should we do?" Jin Long impatiently questioned as he looked at Hua Meifang.

"You could control rats, right?" Hua Meifang asked as she looked at the man.

The man nodded his head.

"Good," Hua Meifang replied with a smile as she instructed, "Send out your rats and keep your eyes and ears all over the city. There is a good chance that the demon King and his subordinate are both here. If you notice anything unnatural, report it back to me immediately."

Jin Long obediently bobbed his head up and down as he heard this.

"Daoist Fu, I’m sorry but I have a favor to ask of you," Hua Meifang shifted her gaze to Jie Fu Lian as she spoke, "For the next two weeks, can you travel to the other side of the city with brother Hua? You’re gonna have to look after him because of his injuries."

Hua Tianshu suddenly felt a little thankful towards his sister and his eyes clearly conveyed those emotions to Hua Meifang who acted as if she noticed nothing.

"Wouldn’t it be better to rest here?" Jie Fu Lian questioned back in confusion.

Hua Meifang sighed as she looked at everyone and responded, "I trust you and I also trust my junior martial brothers, but the demon wanted to turn us all against you. He also tried to incite you on killing us all. You are not a person who would do something like that but he still suggested something like that with confidence. We cannot trust the demon nor can we trust this place. There must be something that he is trying to hide. If he knows the art of manipulation then we might be in trouble. For your safety and ours, it would be best if we stay away."

As the demon had said, everyone could get out of here by killing Jie Fu Lian and Jie Fu Lian could get out of here by killing everyone else. From an outsider’s perspective, the solution was pretty clear—sacrifice a single life to protect the majority. Since Jie Fu Lian would later be resurrected by the demon, it wouldn’t even be considered murder.

The solution was clear so of course there would be some who would be tempted.

In order to prevent that situation, Hua Meifang wanted Jie Fu Lian to stay away from the rest of the group and it made perfect sense.

However, there was something that Jie Fu Lian could still not understand.

"Then why am I taking Hua Tianshu along? Wouldn’t it be better if he stays here with you guys?"

Hua Meifang smiled as she heard this question and replied, "Because I know my brother would rather die than harm you and Daoist Fu is also a person who wouldn’t want to hurt my brother. It won’t be easy to manipulate the two of you so it’s best for you to stay together for the time being."

Of course, she refrained from revealing the fact that she also considered this as helping her brother in winning over Jie Fu Lian’s heart.

"..." Jie Fu Lian didn’t know how he was supposed to respond to that.

Hua Tianshu was his sworn enemy but when Hua Meifang confidently said those words, Jie Fu Lian couldn’t deny it since he really had no intention of causing harm to the man.

However, he did feel a little awkward with how Hua Meifang had chosen to word her thoughts. If somebody else were to hear it, they would certainly think Hua Tianshu and Jie Fu Lian had a very intimate relationship with each other.

Hua Meifang turned her head to look at Tail as she asked, "I have a job for you as well. I wonder if you’ll listen?"

Tail straightened up his back as he heard this and looked at the woman expectantly as he spoke, "I’ll help as long as I can save Young Master Jie Fu Lian from harm."

Hua Meifang lightly chuckled as she heard this and nodded her head as she spoke, "Then I’ll depend on you as well. I want you to go and interact with the corpse puppets."

"Eh?" The boy tilted his head in confusion.

"Ask them what their names are. Ask them where they were born and what they are doing here. Most importantly, ask them if they remember how they died. Try to get as much information about them as possible and if they know anything about the demons, make sure to note it all down and report it back to me."

Tail enthusiastically nodded his head.

One of the HuiXue sect disciples raised his hand as he put his sword away and hesitantly asked, "Senior martial sister, what about us?"

"You should meditate," Hua Meifang glared at the man as she spoke, "After three days of meditation, come back and tell me what you did wrong. Unless you reflect on your wrongdoings, I won’t be forgiving you."

"..."

"Junior brother Zhang," Hua Meifang called out to another HuiXue sect disciple as she spoke, "I want you to create traps."

"Hmm?"

"Create as many as you can and lay them all over the city. Make sure that the traps would react to Demonic Qi. The trap is not only for the demons but also for those who might be controlled by the demons."

"What type of traps is Senior Martial sister suggesting?" The HuiXue sect disciple surnamed Zhang tilted his head as he politely asked.

"Traps made to capture and traps meant to harm as well, but nothing fatal."

The disciple nodded his head.

"We won’t wait till the end of the month. We won’t fight each other. If it’s kill or be killed, we’ll go after the real enemy, the one who created this place and trapped us in here. We’ll kill that annoying demon who loves spouting nonsense!"

They could take care of the demon that tried to strike discord amongst them. After all, defeating a single demon wasn’t something impossible.

However, the Demon King was a problem. Even if they tried, they wouldn’t be able to beat him.

So far, the Demon King hadn’t made an appearance and they could only hope that the man doesn’t make an appearance in the future as well.

It was well known that Shen Fang was a man who disliked bothersome things. He was a man who would do whatever he pleased whenever he felt like it. This was troublesome but also something that could prove to be fortunate for them.

If the demon King didn’t have any interest in them and decided to turn a blind eye, they could get out of here.

However, at this moment, they were unaware of the fact that the demon king was watching their moves very closely, with great interest.

For the next few days, everyone got busy and followed Hua Meifang’s orders.

Jie Fu Lian and Hua Tianshu were perhaps the only ones who weren’t busy since the only thing Hua Meifang had asked them to do was to stay away and rest.

Although Hua Meifang had asked the man to take care of Hua Tianshu, she didn’t really hold any expectations. She just said it as an excuse to get the two closer together. In reality, even Jie Fu Lian didn’t have any thoughts about looking after Hua Tianshu.

However, when he saw Hua Tianshu trying to stitch up his own wound, Jie Fu Lian frowned as he felt displeased, and in the next moment, his body moved on its own and he helped Hua Tianshu.

He thought it was a feeling of pity that drove him to help Hua Tianshu but if it were pity, he would have certainly not been so diligent with his responsibility. He dressed and cleaned Hua Tianshu’s wound regularly. He made sure that he was as gentle as he could be in order to not hurt the man. He cooked three meals a day and although it didn’t taste that great, it was still something palatable. He cleaned the man regularly as well and made sure that Hua Tianshu felt no discomfort in the small house that they had chosen to temporarily move into.
