Chapter 89: A sudden wedding

"This is Bai BoaShi," Jie Fu Lian sighed as he raised the paper and showed it to Sect Master Yao, "Do you recognize her?"

Yao Fei carefully looked at the paper for a moment and from the blank expression on her face, it was hard to guess whether she recognized the woman from the painting or not.

After a minute of blankly staring at the painting, Yao Fei commented, "She’s quite beautiful."

"..." Jie Fu Lian didn’t know if he was supposed to laugh or not as he heard this.

"Do you recognize her?" Hua Tianshu asked.

"I recognize her."

Hua Tianshu and Jie Fu Lian immediately looked at each other as they heard this. This was an instinctual reaction and as soon as their eyes met, they looked away in embarrassment.

Sect Master Yao, who had noticed this small reaction, couldn’t help but feel a little interested and asked, "Did you two have an argument?"

For a second there, her voice reminded Jie Fu Lian of his own mother who would always try to meddle in his private affairs.

"We are merely acquaintances. We hardly know each other so how can we argue?" Jie Fu Lian purposefully used the word ’acquaintance’ that Hua Tianshu had previously used to introduce him to the woman. This was his own way of getting petty revenge, but Hua Tianshu’s calm reaction was certainly disappointing.

Yao Fei smiled as she heard this and commented, "So, I was right."

"..." Jie Fu Lian didn’t even have the heart to argue so he simply didn’t bother saying anything more about it.

Hua Tianshu tried his best not to let his feelings get the better of him and he coughed as he asked, "Sect Master Yao, was she a disciple from the Yu Sect?"

"She wasn’t related to our Yu Sect," The woman firmly spoke.

"Then how do you recognize her?" This time, it was Jie Fu Lian who had questioned.

"I’ve met her once," The woman continued with a sigh as she recalled some old memories that she had almost forgotten, "I don’t remember her name but I do remember her surname. It was not Bai, it was Fu."

Hua Tianshu’s eyebrows creased together as he heard this and he repeated the name, "Fu?"

"That’s right," Yao Fei gave a nod as she confirmed it. "It was a peculiar surname1 so I remembered it. As her name suggested, she looked like a girl born to a wealthy family."

Hua Tianshu, "How and when did you meet her?"

"I met her about thirty years ago. At the time, I was traveling to attend a banquet held in the Pheonix Clan. She was also there as a guest. If I remember correctly, she was a talented rogue cultivator who was invited to join the phoenix clan. There were many who noticed her because of her looks but there were even more who acknowledged her for her skills. She was a kind-hearted woman."

When Jie Fu Lian heard the latter sentence, he felt a little doubtful. The Bai BaoShi that he knew was certainly not kind-hearted, especially not after how harshly she treated Bai YiJun.

"So, did she join the Pheonix clan?" Hua Tianshu questioned and the woman shook her head.

"She probably didn’t. In the first place itself, she had no interest in joining a sect and while attending the banquet, she was quite awkward when it came to socializing. She hardly shared a conversation with anyone."

"Was there anything else about her that seemed peculiar?" Jie Fu Lian asked as he raised his eyebrow.

Yao Fei thought about it for a moment before she shook her head, "There wasn’t anything much to note about her. She was a kind-hearted woman. She was a bit awkward when it came to socializing but she was never rude to anyone. Although she was talented in cultivation, she never boasted about her talents. She was probably from a wealthy Confucianist family. She seemed even more dignified than some of the sect elders present in that banquet."

Jie Fu Lian frowned as he heard this. Somehow, he could not imagine Bai BaoShi being the same person that Yao Fei was describing. The difference in personality was simply a bit too drastic.

"Did you ever see or hear about her again?"

Yao Fei shook her head, "That banquet was the first and last time I ever saw her. If she had joined a sect, I would have gotten wind of it. She must have continued living on as a rogue cultivator or perhaps she went back to her family. In the worst-case scenario, she must have already passed away. After that banquet, I never heard about her again."

Hua Tianshu sighed as he heard this.

They didn’t gain much information or proof about Bai BaoShi being a demon but at least they got her real surname. That in itself was a small achievement.

"May I ask why you are searching for her?" Sect Master Yao politely spoke up as she asked, "I don’t think it’s because of something trivial."

"She is related to the case that we are currently working on. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to disclose any information regarding the case."

"A case?" Yao Fei repeated as she thought about it for a moment before she asked, "Is she a witness, a victim, or a suspect?"

"We don’t know yet," Hua Tianshu honestly replied, "Depending on the information we find about her, she can be any one of them."

"I see," Yao Fei nodded her head, "Well, I hope I was able to help you even if it was something as trivial as a surname."

Hua Tianshu, "You have helped a lot. Thank you."

"We would also like to ask you another question about a previous Yu Sect disciple," Jie Fu Lian added as he questioned, "Jin Shifeng. You must have known her, right?"

"Jin Shifeng?" Yao Fei looked to be a little shocked to hear the name as she asked, "Is she also related to this case?"

Jie Fu Lian and Hua Tianshu naturally could not tell her anything important related to the case so Jie Fu Lian shook his head as he spoke, "As of now, we can’t be too sure, but her husband is related to this case so we might as well check everything thoroughly."

Yao Fei looked to be even more shocked as she heard this and immediately defended, "Jin Long is a good man. He has never done anything wrong. Why would he be related?"

Seeing her defending the man so enthusiastically, Jie Fu Lian couldn’t help but feel that something was off.

Since Jin Shifeng was once a Yu Sect disciple, it would make sense if Yao Fei were to defend her, but the woman was more enthusiastic about defending Jin Long and that was certainly a bit suspicious.

Jie Fu Lian sighed as he spoke, "We both know Jin Long very well and I also agree with what you have said. He is a good man and it is unlikely for him to do anything bad, but we aren’t trying to prove him guilty or anything. We are simply checking everything in order to bring out the truth and if he is truly innocent then naturally, there is nothing to worry about."

Yao Fei couldn’t argue against that and simply nodded her head as she agreed to cooperate.

"Can you tell us how the two got married?" Hua Tianshu spoke up as he questioned, "I’ve heard that it is pretty rare to see a Yu Sect disciple marrying out of the sect."

"You’re right, it is rare but not unheard of," Yao Fei sighed as she replied, "In some cases, certain exceptions are made."

Jie Fu Lian, "Were these exceptions made for Jin Shifeng as well?"

Yao Fei nodded her head as she confirmed it, "That’s right."

Hua Tianshu, "Can you tell us why?"

"My relationship with Sect Master Jin is pretty good. Jin Long is his first son so it is only natural that I made an exception and blessed their marriage."

"Blessed?" Jie Fu Lian’s eyebrows creased together and he felt a little suspicious as he asked, "What do you mean? Was it her decision to get married to Jin Long?"

"Not only hers," Yao Fei smiled as she revealed, "One day, those two came together to pay me a visit and asked for my blessings on their marriage."

Jie Fu Lian felt even more confused as he heard this and quickly asked, "But they had no prior relations with each other, did they?"

"You’re right. I also found it a little strange when I saw them together. Jin Shifeng had been one of my most talented disciples and she had stayed in seclusion for most of her life. But eight years ago, she came out of seclusion and went on a mission. On the way, she somehow got acquainted with Jin Long and when she came back, Jin Long and Sect Master Jin accompanied her and Jin Long asked for her hand in marriage. It was quite shocking but the two looked like they were sure of their decision."

Jie Fu Lian frowned as he heard this and looked at the woman in disbelief. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

Jie Fu Lian liked to believe that he was one of the people who knew Jin Long the best and it was hard to imagine Jin Long agreeing to marry someone on impulse like that.

Fu means ’fortune’ or ’good luck’ but can also mean ’rich’ or ’wealthy’.
