Chapter 287: Sleep.

Shikera’s steps were faster than those of the men even with their long legs that seemed to have unrivalled strides. She followed the nurse who had to match up to her pace while leading them to Liam Anderson’s ward.

"Which floor is he on?" Shikera asked as they stepped into the elevator. With a face void of any form of emotions, she pressed the button to close the elevator doors even though Ethan and the rest weren’t near yet.

"Shikera!" Noah exclaimed, quickening his pace.

However, the doors closed before any of them could get there. Shikera turned to the nurse who was now staring at her with an unsure expression and smiled.

"It’s alright. You don’t have to worry about them," she said.

Nodding, the nurse replied, "Your father is on the 10th floor but we’re working towards transferring him down to the ground floor. What do you think, Miss Anderson?"

"I don’t really mind where he stays as long as it’s conducive and comfortable. But who requested that his room be changed?" Shikera asked.

"That’s Mr Anderson. He said he doesn’t want you riding in unsafe elevators. He also informed us nurses of your condition and told us to take good care of you."

Shikera was confused. What condition she did have?

"By Mr Anderson, are you talking about my father?"

"Your brother," the nurse corrected.

"What?! And what exactly is my condition that he told you all about?"

The nurse hesitated for a few seconds before answering, her gaze lowering to Shikera’s belly and reverting back up to her face.

"He told us you are pregnant wants us to watch your—"

"Oh my god! Noah really needs to be spanked, doesn’t he? It would have been better if he took a megaphone and announced it to the whole world that I’m pregnant, or better still, he should have shouted it into Ethan’s ears. That would have been more effective," she murmured under her breath.

Glancing up at the nurse, she beamed, "This is what will happen, Nurse. Please do help me tell the rest of your colleagues not to mention my pregnancy anywhere in this hospital, and especially not wherever my husband is. Can you help me with that?" she asked.

The nurse nodded immediately. Shikera’s brother had already given them that instruction earlier, so she had no problem following it.

"Thanks so much," Shikera appreciated.

The doors to the elevator opened and the two of them stepped out and approached the room where Liam was.

"How is he? I know the doctor might have spoken to my husband and brother but I still want to know," Shikera asked.

The nurse nodded in understanding.

"He’s a lot better than when he just got here, but we don’t think he would be able to last much longer without surgery," she explained.

"Then why not undergo the surgery? What are they waiting for?"

By this time, they had gotten to the door. The nurse pushed the door open and held it for Shikera to enter the room, before following.

"The doctors said surgery has a very low chance of success since he stayed a long time without medications. He was here earlier in this year and has been prepared for surgery then, but he had to leave suddenly, therefore jeopardizing his own health and chances. For now, the doctors have to think of an alternative."

Shikera approached the bed where Liam was lying with his eyes closed, different sort of fluids flowing in and out of his body.

"You can leave now."

The nurse turned to walk out of the room, leaving Shikera alone. She closed the door gently behind her and walked down the hallway. She almost bumped into Raymond as he was the one leading the men to the room.

"How is she?" Noah asked. Without being told, anyone could tell he was referring to Shikera.

"She asked how Chairman Anderson is and I told her the exact same thing you were told by the doctor," the nurse replied.

"How did she react?"

"Nothing out of the ordinary," the nurse replied. Since no other questions were forthcoming, she took a polite bow and walked away.

It took a while to move Liam down to the first floor as the ward he was to stay, had to be renovated and redecorated even though his family didn’t request for it.

In the past few days, Ethan had travelled to and fro the two countries together with Raymond, settling some affairs which he wouldn’t talk about. Even though Shikera threatened to ignore him until he told her what it was about, he still maintained his stance and continued to dodge her question instead. He had left Cole and some of his men who were acting in disguise among the patients, doctors, and nurses together with Noah and Shikera.

Presently, Shikera was sitting in her new favorite position which was on the chair placed right next to her father’s bed.

"Noah, what kind of lawyer do you have? I’m finding it hard to keep myself from sleeping whenever Ethan is here. I’m scared he will ask one of the nurses to run a check-up for me and insist on seeing the results himself," she complained, turning to glare at him over her shoulders.

The object of her attention was currently lying on the extra bed in the room where he had been sleeping his life away for the past few days. Shikera was often tempted to push him off the bed and chase the drowsiness out of his eyes.

"Hmmm," came his muffled reply.

Shikera sighed, "I just asked when your lawyer is going to get the contract ready!"

"Soon," Noah replied.

"And when exactly is this soon? Ethan is probably going to be alerted if I dare to find a lawyer by myself and that’s why I’m asking you for this one thing. Why can’t you just—"

"I’ll get it tonight. Can I go to sleep now, please?" Noah interjected, picking up the earplugs which had been lying on the medicine cabinet. "Keep yourself busy until tonight, Kera. You don’t want to sleep when your father’s in the operating theatre," he added.
