Chapter 130: Two Major Events

The low murmur in the Boneyard slowly died down. Standing by Commandant Draegor’s left was a female teacher from the Luna Academy. She was petite and had short straight hair. Theo remembered once seeing her gawking at Sylas as he had walked by.

By the Commandant’s right was Professor Raina. He was the one who usually taught them the theoretical aspects of teaching.

Commandant Draegor stepped forward, and the place hushed to a pindrop silence.

"Students of Gravemont," His voice carried, firm and cold, "And visitors from Luna Academy. I am pleased to announce that the administration has finalised the joint programmes for this term,"

A ripple of interest spread through the crowd.

"For the remainder of Luna Academy’s stay," Draegor continued, "There will be two compulsory events designed to test discipline, unity, and adaptability between both institutions,"

Theo leaned back slightly, already wary. She felt Ava’s grip tighten, and also slipped her hand into hers.

"The first," The Commandant said, "is a joint theatrical production,"

A collective pause of confusion rolled across the room.

Theo wasn’t sure if she had heard that right. A...play?

"This is not for entertainment," Draegor added flatly, as if anticipating their reaction, "It is an exercise in control, restraint, emotional command, and presence. Participation is mandatory. Any student who refuses will face immediate expulsion,"

That shut everyone up properly.

"The play is titled ’Ash of the First Howl.’"

Theo’s attention sharpened. She’s heard that name before. As she tried to remember, the Commandant continued, "It is a tragic account of the first Alpha war where loyalty, prophecy, and ambition collided, and the pack paid the price,"

Some students exchanged uneasy glances.

The female professor stepped forward now, holding a slate, "The lead roles have already been assigned, and we will be announcing the male leads tonight,"

A beat.

"Hezekiah Pendragon will portray Kael, the Alpha heir,"

The Boneyard reacted instantly with whispers, gasps, and more than a few excited murmurs.

Zeke didn’t react. He didn’t even look up. His eyes were closed, but he was still oozing danger.

"The Female Lead, the woman bound to him by fate, will be played by...,"

"Oh no," Theo heard Ava breathe next to her.

"...Ava Kingsman,"

The Students, especially the girls looked extremely displeased. Lots of them cast Ava with a glare, telling her with their eyes that she was in a whole lot of trouble.

"And," The Professor added, eyes lifting deliberately, "Thaddeus Douglas"

Theo’s spine went rigid. What the hell?

"—will portray Aeron, the Alpha who betrays the pack,"

The villain.

A sharp intake of breath passed through the crowd.

Aurelius glanced sideways at her, brows knitting slightly, while Celeste’s gaze lingered longer than necessary.

"Remaining roles will be posted by Dawn at the announcement board," Hitch finished, "Rehearsals begin tomorrow by 2pm prompt. The play will be performed in exactly two weeks,"

Commandant Draegor stepped forward again, "And the second event,"

That got everyone’s attention back.

"This one will take place in five days,"

No details followed.

"You will be placed into mixed teams, Gravemont and Luna Academy combined," Draegor said, "Assignments and rules will be released the morning of the event, and the only information you are permitted to know in advance is this: the terrain will be rocky, the conditions will be unforgiving, and success will depend entirely on how well you trust those you are paired with,"

A low, uneasy murmur rippled through the arena. Everyone stared at each other with discomfort.

"This is not a game," the Commandant concluded, "It is a test. Your second assessment for the term, so remember that,"

And with that, the three of them turned around and left the room.

The boneyard erupted instantly. Theodora knew she would never hear the end of this, and Ava was now a shaking mess next to her. Where the hell was the bold girl whom she had spoken to at the library the other day?

"The more you act like a target, the more you’re targeted," Theo whispered to her, "And this is the perfect time to do that again. Raise your head and look them all in the eye, don’t back out first. Be the predator...not the prey. Never the prey again,"

Ava repeated under her breath, "Never the prey again..."

It wasn’t easy at all. Every stare felt like a dagger through her heart, and it hurt more since she felt everything more than anyone else. She could feel them all trying to rip out her skin with their eyes, and she could tell Heather was the most annoyed.

She felt Theo’s grip tighten reassuringly by her side.

"God, Ava. If I could do half of what you can...," Theo was genuinely envious of how special Ava was, "I would have been living the dream by now,"

In a short while, everyone’s tray was empty, and students were leaving the boneyard.

Zeke also left.

Theo turned to Aurelius, "No pressure,"

"You shouldn’t say that,"

"Or what?"

He looked at her with a deep expression in his eyes. They looked soft and fervent, like there was a lot he wanted to express.

Then, Celeste tapped him.

"You going?"

"Yeah," Aurelius stood up, "Let’s go,"

Celeste glanced over his shoulder at her, "Goodnight, little Ghost, or should I say... Little Villain,"

She rolled her eyes. She was no villain.

Once the room was almost empty, Theo felt Ava release the grip on her arm and they both stood up.

As they approached the door outside, they heard a familiar, annoying voice complaining to someone.

"...with red hair. He slapped me, brother. Can you believe it? He slapped my face. I won’t stand for it. I deserve justice. You need to teach him a lesson now that you’re here!!"

"It’s Heather," Ava said.

"I’m tempted to punch her this time," Theodora admitted.

They walked out of the room, and Theo stopped walking. The scent of olive had caught her nostrils, and she almost didn’t believing it for a second.

Then, she looked up.

Light brown eyes stared at her with a wave, and a smile broke out on her face.

Her legs moved on their own, racing toward him with her heart pounding inside her chest, and she threw her arms around him the moment she closed the distance between them.

"Liam!" She cried, "You’re back!"
