Chapter 14 - Settling in

One week had passed since Clyde had returned to the realm of the living. If it had another name he wasn't sure, but that didn't matter at the moment.

For some reason Clyde was woken up in the middle of the night. At this point he had planned to start training at the academy as his arm was nearly recovered. He initially thought he woke up because of nerves however that changed quickly when he began to hear noises.

The inn he was staying at wasn't particularly large. Besides the twelve rooms there was a small lounge.

As Clyde was about to step out to see what the commotion was about, he noticed there was absolutely no light entering his room from the window. It was always dark at night anyway but this was different.

'What the hell is going on?'

Opening the door Clyde saw the other current residents of the inn talking amongst themselves.

"The gods have forsaken us!"

"Shut up you fools! It's clearly an illusion."

"Something like this shouldn't be possible."

Clyde walked up to the group and decided to ask them outright.

"What are you guys talking about?"

They all grew silent until one man spoke up.

"Go look outside and see what's changed."

With nothing else to be said, Clyde quietly walked outside.

Initially when he opened the door the amount of darkness was strange. It wasn't as if he couldn't see but it was definitely uncomfortable. Looking around the street he saw several other people gazing upward. He was inclined to look as well.

'Oh.'

Both of the planets moons were gone. It was so dark because the only thing lighting the surface was stars far away.

Clyde was shocked. Who wouldn't be in circumstances like this.

'What does it even mean?'

Continuing to look at as much of the sky as possible, Clyde's stress grew.

Even if someone was capable of doing this it doesn't make sense as to why they would. Furthermore, if someone was capable then that meant a great deal of danger.

Clyde turned around and walked back to his room ignoring the other people.

As he hit the mattress of his bed Clyde sighed.

'This can at least wait until morning.'

Sometime later Clyde was woken up by a knock on his door.

However he was startled by something else. He could see it was still dark out through his window.

"Clyde we need to talk."

It was Aveyln.

"Come in."

She ran up to him and grabbed him tightly looking into his eyes. After a moment she let go.

"It seems you're fine."

"I'm fine? What's going on why is it still dark?"

"I don't know all the details but things are really bad. It seems as if this was some coordinated attack. I looked into your eyes because something or someone is possessing people. For all we know this might be an attack on the entire country of Ciedar. All communications are down and judging from the positions of the distant stars, we haven't moved at all."

"What about Bell, where is she?"

"She's currently at the Academy, that's where all the current survivors are at as well. To be honest you're lucky that you're alive. It's extremely dangerous outside, aside from the thing possessing people, many monsters that stay away from cities have all come out to play."

'An endless nightmare with creatures that excel in the dark.'

"Well then, let's go."

Instantly she grabbed Clyde's and and hurried out of the room with him.

Clyde really had been lucky because the lobby he previously was at now was a gruesome scene at best. A dead silver wolf was ripped in half on the table the guest were surrounding. There were limbs all over the place additionally.

Clyde begane to speak but Avelyn gave him a strong look implying there is no time to think.

In all honesty his wrist was starting to hurt by how tightly she was grabbing it but he didn't really mind either.

As she was dragging him down the city occasionally stopping and changing directions, Clyde couldn't help but think.

'This can't be real.'

Avelyn turned around and looked him echoing his own thoughts.

"This is very real."

'Could she read minds now?'

"No"

"Ok now you're freaking me out."

She let out a chuckle.

"You're just a bit predictable to me."

"Not sure how I'm supposed to feel about that."

"Be quiet we are almost there."

Things were far too quiet. At this point they have gotten here with not interruptions. Clyde did see a few horrors with his own eyes but they were avoidable. To his suprise they reached the inside of the academy with no issues.

As soon as they got into the foyer Avelyn spoke clearly.

"It's me."

At the moment six different people stepped out of the shadows, all of which let out a sigh of relief.

"Glad you made it back, I hope this guy was worth it."

As Clyde began to retort, Bell beat him to it.

"That man is very important so you should watch your mouth."

Avelyn showed no signs of emotion as she entered the conversation.

"Both of you calm down, Quentin, this guy is a personal friend of mine. Now that I'm back as anyone shown any changes at all."

"No, its been smooth sailing."

"Alright resume your post here, me and my friend are gonna discuss some things. Bell you come with us."

Avelyn led Clyde and Bell up the stairs and to her personal office.

Once inside she took a seat and Clyde sat across from her. Bell sat in a chair next to Clyde. Another boy that Clyde had never seen before was also in the room, he must be someone special if he interested Avelyn.

"Now that we are all here, allow me to put things bluntly. Avalor has all but fallen, it's clear that in the coming days there will be no one left. If there are people out there then they will likely be dead soon. In here we have a total count of about six thousand people. Even if we got everyone out of the city there is nowhere to go, additionally we can't expect reinforcements because this is likely happening everywhere. We have zero communication to anyone and we have virtually no information about the situation at hand."

The things coming out of Avelyns mouth were deeply concerning to Clyde but he tried to not let it show. Looking over at the boy he was displaying a statue like expression. Bell on the other hand looked much darker. However Clyde had a question he needed answered.

"What's the plan?"

"Seeing that we are outnumbered against an army of deadly monsters, most of which are terribly strong as they climbed out of hell directly, the solution is clear. We fight out the horde and reestablish a stronghold."

'She can't be serious.'

"By the way, I am deeply serious."

Bell spoke up.

"I'll do my best."

The boy went next.

"Whatever you ask of me to do, I will accomplish."

The eyes were all on Clyde.

"I guess if we are gonna die anyway we might as well try, besides I'd rather not die... again."

Avelyn turned towards the window and started talking again.

"If we die, we die."
