Chapter 15 - Status

Avalor had an original population around twenty thousand. With about six thousand inhabitants inside of the academy, that meant almost seventy percent were either dead or missing. Of the six thousand, only eight hundred people were capable of combat.

Currently Clyde was finishing up scouting. There were individual beast that were strong but they were not immediate threats. A large pack of silver wolfs were ravaging what they could find on the eastern front of the city. On the west front was three horses of war. Of course the biggest threat would be the creature controlling the dead.

That particular being must be hiding somewhere in the rubble. Typically beings that excelled in mind manipulation were physically weak which is why it would hide itself and let its thrall do the work.

At this point nothing was threatening the walls of the academy outright but it would be best to not let it come to that. Deciding that of the three threats the easiest one to tackle would be the wolves, Clyde returned to inform Avelyn.

She was already awaiting his return.

"What do you think?"

Clyde explained his thoughts.

"I see, I would have to agree with you. While the wolves would be the best to deal with, we can't afford to take many with us. You and Lapis should be a good pair together. Considering the pack is the size of sixty wolves I think we can make by with one hundred of you going out together."

"This lapis guy, what's his deal?"

"I met him when he was barely ten, he was already capable of performing magic at that point. He had a really rough childhood, and you and him are very similar."

"I see, alright then, I'll be off."

Clyde wished that Avelyn would accompany him but the risk at the academy would be perilous if something were to attack it while she was gone. Leaving the room Clyde made his way to the dining hall.

It took some time because it was located back on the first floor and on the opposite side of Avelyns room. But it was a big open area to situate many people.

Once inside he found the young boy Lapis from he saw earlier.

"You and me are gonna take care of some things."

"Okay."

Something about his eyes were unsettling, but that didn't matter much to Clyde right now.

Clyde made his way to the center of the dining hall with Lapis at his side. Everyone in there was pretty quiet and began to look at Clyde. Taking this opportunity he spoke loud and clearly.

"I need around one hundred capable people to go out with me. I know it might be easy to stay in the comfort of the academy but if we don't act now there will be no peace later. I'm asking for volunteers because I need people who will have my back and our willing, otherwise you'd just be in the way if you were forced. Meet me in the foyer in five minutes, our target is the silver wolf beast horde."

Clyde walked away with Lapis continuing to follow him. Once they arrived at the entrance of the academy lapis started laughing.

"What's so funny?"

"You acting that way."

Ignoring him, Clyde awaited the arrival of willing slayers. One minute passed, then another.

A few people showed up, then a few more.

Five minutes passed.

'I'll wait another two minutes.'

Lapis began to laugh again.

"It's funny you think people are willing to die for something, even if it makes sense."

"Perhaps you're correct."

Counting the heads, there was a total of thirty-seven men and four women. Forty-one total.

This was suboptimal to state the obvious.

Addressing the group entirely Clyde began to speak.

"I can't promise you anything except that I'll do my best, in turn do yours."

Turning around Clyde led the group outside.

Although the primary goal was to eliminate the silver wolf horde, there were big threats in the city.

Entities that existed alone and killed whatever they found. The plan would be for Avelyn to sweep up the straggling beast after the main threats were cleared. Of course if Clyde and his group could take something out that would be great. Though taking on one of these would mainly depend on which one they directly encountered.

After walking several hundreds of feet the group halted. A deep scream for help was heard. This caused the group to begin speaking.

"We have to help!"

"You idiot, that's not a person."

"How could you be sure?"

"Well it's not up to us is it?"

The group looked at Clyde. No one was wrong in their logic but Clyde needed to make a decision.

"It's not a big detour we can take a look."

New novel 𝓬hapters are published on freёwebnoѵel.com.

The reaction was fifty fifty.

Taking a right inbetween an ally the group didn't pick up pace at all. Reaching the other side the street was empty except for one body. It was mutilated with all of its limbs gone.

Clyde noticed some people looked confused. They didn't realize that they already walked into a trap.

'Looks like I made the wrong choice.'

The body let out another scream for help.

At that point the others realized it also.

"Prepare yourselves."

The group instinctively formed a tight circle with their backs to one another. Looking around nothing was out of the ordinary.

After hundred of battles during the trial, Clyde felt the attack as it came. He wasn't sure if anyone else besides him was capable of noticing it either.

The icy claw appeared in front of Clyde in slow motion. Even still it wasn't possible to dodge.

It was targeting him first.

The set of claws left deep marks in Clyde's chest knocking him down. Before anyone had time to react, the creature grabbed Clyde and they both disappeared from view.

From Clyde's perspective everyone around them disappeared. He was still on the ground and in the same place but it felt different. However Clyde could see the thing in it's entirety.

It was dark blue and had a sinister aura around it. Its eyes were pure white with no nose and a dark smile. The arms were abnormally longer going past the knees of the creature. What would have been fingers were replaced with slender knife like claws.

Unfortunately Clyde realized where he was. It was a place inbetween life and death. Many people or creatures who couldn't pass peacefully would end up here. Very few beings could travel freely between.

The creature that was about to attack Clyde once more was an ice wraith.
