Chapter 170: One-sided affection

However, apart from anything that came to his eyes at the moment, as long as the one-sided affection did not come from the lady who was staring into his eyes or she returned the one-sided affection of that man, who seemed unable to remove his gaze from her, he was fine with that.

It was fine, although he, himself, as the lady’s husband, had not gotten his affection returned by her either yet and had not even had his name called out through her soft voice without the title attached to it.

It was fine as long as she had him in her beautiful eyes, not others.

"It is good to hear about your friendship with Captain Zilberman, wife. Thank you for telling me that," Canillas remarked with a smile, holding Joanna’s eyes in his while, through the corner of his eyes, he caught the young Captain still having his eyes on her.

With his palm still covering Joanna’s hand, which still rested on his other arm, Canillas shifted his eyes to look at Admiral Vich.

"Regarding the naval base inspection, Captain Zilberman had done a good job. He had explained it very well to me," Canillas stated. "If there is still more to talk about that matter or anything related to military cooperation between Archess and Terra, I will appreciate it if we discuss it at the right time and place, but, of course, after we set an advanced schedule. What do you think, Admiral Vich?"

Canillas looked straight at the Terran senior navy soldier. His tone was firm and decisive. No smile could be found on his face as he was back to his reserved look that he usually showed to others but his wife.

And he wanted to give a hint to the young Captain that he, as the lady’s husband, gave no room for him to show his one-sided affection to her, whose warm hand was under his.

Canillas also wanted the so-called one of the best navy soldiers in Terra to know that the one-sided affection would remain forever if he wanted to keep that with him because he, for sure, would not get the affection returned to him as long as the lady whom the affection he had for was bound in a marriage with Canillas von Rodega.

"Sure, General von Rodega. We will correspond with Archess regarding our further military cooperation and set a schedule for the next meeting," Admiral Vich answered in no time, as if noticing the change of air around them.

"I will appreciate it then, Admiral. Thank you for paying attention to this matter." Canillas gave a response without dissipating respect for the senior fellow soldier, although aloofness was still evident in his facial expression.

"So, now, since there is nothing more to discuss, we apologize if we take our leave first. There are some acquaintances that I want to introduce to my wife so that she will know with whom her husband works in her homeland," Canillas excused, not bothering to prolong mingling with the two gentlemen, whose gazes were not on his wife anymore but on him.

"Sure, General," Admiral Vich quickly responded, nodding his head. "We hope to see you around soon," he added a little more with a friendly smile, although it was not returned by the aloof General, who only gave a faint nod.

"Then, we’ll take our leave, Admiral Vich, Captain Zilberman." Canillas swept his gaze toward each of them as each of their names was mentioned. "It is an honor to see you all." With that having been said, Canillas took Joanna to leave both the Terran navy soldiers after offering a slight bow.

As they made their way deeper into the crowd, Joanna wondered to whom he wanted to introduce her. Were they important figures? Were they the other Terran soldiers he had worked with?

But how could he know exactly where they were among hundreds of people in a spacious hall? Joanna thought as she followed him, who led her walk with his eyes facing straight ahead.

His decisive steps yet languid pace gave an extra hint if he knew where his destination was, as he did not even bother to slow down his pace or look around to find them.

"Where are we going to, Sir Canillas?" Joanna asked when she found him keeping on cutting through the sea of people while greeting no one yet.

What resulted from his action was that some people stared at them before and after both of them passed them and did not leave them afterwards, as she could feel their gazes pierce her back.

"You will find out soon." Joanna heard the brief answer to her question that was said in a crisp tone, making her more curious yet reluctant at the same time, as she felt exhausted already to gather energy to greet whoever it was with poise and grace in the middle of many eyes that were set on her.

She thought that greeting the first acquaintances a few seconds ago was more than enough. But she knew that it was impossible when the fact lay that her current companion happened to have a lot of acquaintances, which was a very stark contrast from her.

However, as they walked further towards a destination where only the General knew where it was, Joanna got more confused when she realized that they were more away from the crowd.

The noise became more faint as they walked, passing corridors after corridors. The number of people they encountered was getting less and less until there were none in the void corridors.

Lanterns were lit in line along the way they passed, but then their surroundings became dimmer when the resonated sound only came from the clicking sound of their shoes that hit the dark marble floor.

"S-Sir Canillas, where...?" The worried and anxious Joanna was about to ask where he was taking her exactly when she could not bear the eerie and chill air around her anymore, where floor-to-ceiling pillars were like lurking shadows that would move and spring at her anytime soon.

But she did not finish her questioning words when she finally found out where her companion had brought her, as he slowed down his pace before taking a full halt.

They had now seemed to arrive at their destination.

However, at the revelation before her eyes, Joanna could not help but be stunned.

For a moment, she was lost for words. There were no words she could express to respond to the acquaintances that the General had worked with and wanted to introduce to her.
