The General's Wife Wants to Leave-Chapter 171: Infiltration
Chapter 171: Infiltration
Standing tall before her was a glass door that was surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, through which the luminous glow of the moon cut through the dimness, blending with the yellow-orange glow that was emitted from two lanterns that were hung on each side of the wall at the end of the corridor that led to the balcony across the glass door.
With the addition of light that now enveloped her, after passing through the minimal amount of light that was provided by the small number of lanterns among the corridors since the sound of crowds could not reach her sense of hearing, Joanna was now staring at the moon’s silvery visage that shone in through the window before her.
Even though it did not provide her with much light, the silvery glow of the moon made her somehow feel at ease, like a fish returning to the sea after being washed ashore.
However, it did not last long, as the curiosity about why the General brought her to the area where they were currently was not yet answered.
Looking at her right and left sides, where another passage led somewhere that she did not know but was not interested in finding out due to the dimness and eeriness, Joanna waited for figures to emerge as she thought that the acquaintances that the General wanted to introduce her would appear soon from anywhere it was.
But then, suddenly, after a fleeting moment of waiting, Joanna became more restless than she was before being brought to their current location. Eventually, a number of questions popped up in her mind.
Why should they meet in such a secluded area where no one was present? Why didn’t they meet them in the hall where many people gathered? Was it a private meeting that could not be known by others? Were these figures so important that they should not be seen by others?
Question after question surged one by one in Joanna’s mind until it halted at one point. With her eyes snapped open toward Canillas, as if something had hit her conscience, Joanna stared into him, who was now standing in front of her, blocking the moonlight with his large figure.
Because her mind went astray, she did not realize that she did not hold his arm anymore. He should have pulled it away a while ago.
Was it infiltration? Was he going to meet the parties that Archess planted in Terra? If so, what if it were revealed? What if he were caught because of that? Joanna was panicking, her hands trembling at the thought.
However, before what was emerging in her mind was shaped into a stronger conjecture, her eyes squinted before wavering at the scene that came into her sight.
Perhaps the previous presumption was an absurd one as a result of her being too immersed in the books she read during her leisure time.
Perhaps the movement that was performed in front of her was close enough to answer why her present companion brought her to such a secluded place.
Standing face-to-face with Canillas, who was about one and a half steps away from her, Joanna watched him unbutton his tailcoat in a deliberate motion.
With each button unfastened, the intensity of Joanna’s heartbeat increased to the point where it almost exploded in her chest. The knuckles of her hands that gripped each side of her full skirt turned whiter, and her hands shook more as seconds passed.
Realizing why he had brought her to such a place, Joanna was panicking, yet she could not hide the disappointment that surged in her heart.
But why, after all they had experienced together, and after all the tenderness he showed her, he ruined them all like this?
He wanted her to trust him. He wanted her to accept him as her husband. But he did this to her.
Aside from all of that, he had just comforted her when she was in such a prone state—a state in which she tried hard to conquer the problems with which she had long struggled every time she attended every event that made her want to hide more in her peaceful dwelling place.
Now, when she considered that his presence had meaning to her, he showed her his true color. Didn’t it mean that the dream she had that night was not a mere dream, like how she had tried to navigate it after pondering the entire night?
Last night, when she held the wedding ring and birthday gift in her hand, she really felt that the barrier that she had built was on the verge of turning into mist. She had even thought that she should not be driven mad by a dream, as until last night she had not once seen the whole figure that she saw in that dream.
What she had seen were the opposite characters of a man with the same face as the man in the dream.
But it seemed that she had made a too-raw decision. The sadness grew stronger in Joanna’s heart at the thought.
Nonetheless, Joanna was somehow certain that there was something that triggered him to act like this, as she still remembered very well and could even sense that he was like the same man she met from the first time until a few seconds ago.
Was it because of Marvin? Joanna questioned that in her mind. But she had explained her relationship with Marvin, hadn’t she?
However, even if she had not explained it to him before, didn’t he say that he knew the meaning of her silent answer to the question he gave her in relation to the condition that would determine the future of their marriage that day when they were at the Glasstown River?
Wasn’t it because of his tacit understanding and because she was too transparent to be read by him that he maintained their marriage? Wasn’t it because there was no other man dear to her heart that he kept his word to maintain their marriage?
If he could not read her easily, their marriage would have been over that day on the Glasstown River.
But why did he become like this after she voiced it as a form of respect for him, as he had respected her all this time?
But apart from all of that, didn’t he trust her?
With sadness and disappointment lingering in her heart, Joanna watched Canillas take off his tailcoat.
Feeling that the man who had always protected her and given her comfort had gone, Joanna glanced to her right and left as she looked for a way to flee.
Or should she scream? Joanna thought when she felt that she might not be able to beat the running speed of a prominent soldier like him. She weighed it in her mind while being determined that she would never forgive him once she could escape him.
Subsequently, when she was still contemplating what to do to escape the man who had disappointed her, she found him taking a languid step forward, which made her take a step backward before she turned around.
She had decided that, instead of screaming that she was not sure if people could hear it, she would use her energy to run as fast as she could, like she did when she escaped the drooling wolves in the mountain’s forest.
However, before Joanna managed to make the second step to flee, her movement was blocked by a muscular and strong arm that wrapped around her stomach, causing her back to stumble upon a rock-like chest behind her.fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
