Chapter 223: Are you happy?

"So that’s how you knew that there was something fishy with that woman, and you followed me..." Joanna mumbled after Marvin narrated how he found her and prevented her from following the maidservant further.

"I really didn’t mean to act like a pervert. That’s all I could do in order to greet you more properly when your husband was away. I am sorry if it may cause you to be wary of me," Marvin remarked, studying Joanna’s countenance to find whether she was fine or disturbed by his action, who kept an eye on her when she was alone.

"No. No, Marvin," Joanna hurriedly said, waving her hands. "You are not a stranger to me. We have known each other for so long. So please don’t think too much about that." Clasping her hands on the edge of the round table that stood between her and Marvin, Joanna continued to speak. "My husband is not a bad person. He will understand and won’t object to it if you happen to come to see me when he is around. It is even better that way so you two could know each other more." She reasoned.

Joanna knew very well that Marvin respected her. She did not doubt that Marvin would never have an ill intention toward her, as they had known each other since they were kids. However, there was something that Joanna had to keep in mind.

His reason to talk to her when her husband was away could not be considered appropriate. Regardless of any reasons he brought up, it was more proper to talk when she was not alone, remembering her status as someone’s wife.

Nonetheless, Joanna understood why Marvin chose to stay away from Canillas. She remembered how Canillas looked when Marvin greeted her when they just arrived at the great hall of the castle. Because of that, she thought that he was angry and had a plan to do something that she disliked when he brought her to a deserted, quiet place.

But as now she got an understanding of what kind of person her husband was after their long and deep conversation in that quiet place, she believed that he would be fine if they happened to meet and talk together with Marvin.

Joanna was even more than certain that her husband preferred that way better than a misunderstanding was created. He might not misunderstand that, but others might. Hence, it was better to avoid rumor as much as possible, especially when many eyes and ears were ready to catch anything that would be pleased to be served to taint one’s reputation and dignity.

It was what Joanna wanted to tell Marvin—for him to approach her when she was not alone. As for their current meeting, Joanna regarded it as nothing to be worried about, due to the fact that Marvin was not a foreign person for de Lara.

His father had dedicated his life to de Lara. Marvin, himself, was the best friend of the sole successor of de Lara. Hence, Marvin had been long regarded as de Lara’s people, part of de Lara’s big family.

All staffs of de Lara, either senior or junior, knew that very well, as none of them did not recognize Marvin, the son of Sir Sylvester Zilberman, the Commander of Barasca knights, and rumor would not grow from inside de Lara’s wall.

A smile of understanding was formed on Marvin’s lips. He also nodded his head, as it was not hard to decipher any message that the lady across from him wanted to tell.

Drifting his eyes from Joanna’s face to her hands that clasped on the table, he fixed his eyes on an object that adorned her fair finger and shone under the illumination of sunlight. The object drew his attention enough as she frequently played it with her other fingers, as if it were her habit.

"Are you happy with your marriage, Ann?" Marvin asked, bringing his gaze back from the wedding ring toward Joanna’s face.

There was no trace of a little girl’s features that he used to see in her. The lady before him had grown up into a mature lady. She even could fight herself, despite her weak and timid look. There was nothing to worry about. He told himself, a smile evident on his face.

For a moment, Joanna was silent, as she was taken aback by the sudden question that was given by Marvin. The question still made her surprise, although it was not the first time she heard that. It was actually the second time she was asked the same question after the first one was questioned by Clara de Lorn before the incident happened that night. freёweɓnovel.com

When Clara de Lorn asked her that question, she was taken aback, but she quickly brushed it off, quickly regaining her composure, trying to appear as normal as she could, as she did not want to give any impression that would make Lady de Lorn find any oddity that would push her more to the edge to give up on her marriage, to make her surrender her position as the General’s wife because she was not happy in the marriage.

Being easy to read by Clara de Lorn, who claimed herself to be in love with the General, had to be avoided after learning how insane she could be in order to get a status as the General’s wife.

Joanna did not know before that that lady observed her that thoroughly, which caused her to act like a woman who was not in the right mind when the response she received was not in line with what she had observed.

Finding the beautiful lady who had captivated so many eyes to be in the wild state that she had never thought to ever see from her elegant, gracious, and charming self, as that how she had shown herself in the public’s eyes, had made Joanna stunned and lost for words.

Hence, she quickly gave a confident answer in a confident demeanor that she was happy in her marriage and was happy to be the wife of General Canillas von Rodega.

That way she would give no room to that lady to act more crazily, although the result she obtained was still the opposite, as that young lady’s insanity got more unleashed after she gave her that confident answer.

However, this time, Marvin asked her the same question, making Joanna ponder the real answer to the question.

Was she happy in her marriage with General Canillas von Rodega?
