Chapter 224: Action spoke louder

Joanna had pondered about the inquiry that had taken her aback, yet the first answer that popped up in her mind was that she did not know.

Yes, she did not know whether she was happy or not in her marriage, as she was still here in her homeland. She was not sure if she was happy, as she was still surrounded by her lovely family and she was still under her father’s protection.

The husband that she had avoided due to the nightmare, which made her return to her homeland without any slight hesitation, had not yet shown any sign like what she witnessed in that dream. Because of that reason alone, she had decided to maintain her status as his wife, and because of that as well, she decided to follow him back to his homeland.

But still, she could not bring herself to lightly and certainly say that she was happy in her marriage.

Then, could she say that she was happy once she stepped into that place again? Would she claim herself to be happy once she was back there to the place where her husband originally came from?

Smiling, Joanna nodded her head. "I am." It was all she uttered as an answer to Marvin.

Although the person she currently faced was not the insane Lady de Lorn, she should avoid any suspicion that would create an impression that would make others question more.

It would still be odd if she took a longer pause or had her lips closed shut, giving a break to answer the question that might be easy to answer by most of the married couples. Therefore, she said that as her answer, reminding herself that everything would be fine for something that she had to go through in life, for something that gave her difficulty to avoid, for something that became her fate.

Happiness. She would get the answer for herself when time told her so.

Once again, Marvin gave a nod at Joanna’s answer, although a fleeting moment of silence did not miss his observation. But he let it go, withdrawing from the urge to probe her more.

If she said that she was happy, then she might be happy. He would like to respect her answer.

"You are right. Your husband is not a bad person." Marvin chose to switch to the topic that might become the reason why she was happy in her marriage, as she stated. Lifting the tea cup and taking a sip of bitter tea, Marvin placed the tea cup back on top of the saucer on the table in front of him. Looking back at Joanna, he offered her a kind smile before he resumed to speak.

"He may look rude and arrogant, but he is not a bad person." Marvin repeated his previous words. "He is not senseless in his every action. Like how he raged after that incident. Even His Majesty had a hard time defending his argument." Marvin took another sip of the tea that was not warm anymore, recalling what he had seen with his own eyes.

He had his grounds for saying that. He had seen how genuine the General, whose fame surpassed the generals in Terra, felt toward his wife. Everything that became a scene that night he still remembered well.

Men understood men most. Marvin agreed with that saying. It might be hard to confirm one feeling with a word, but action most of the time spoke louder.

"Rage? My husband in rage?" Joanna was bewildered at the information she heard, making her lean forward in her seat as if she wanted to hear more clearly to ensure that she did not hear wrong. "How did you know that, Marvin? Did you see that?" Not able to hide her curiosity and surprise, Joanna asked more. Her brows furrowed.

The husband that had not gone back home yet was in rage with His Majesty. Was it fine? Wasn’t it regarded as a rebellion? Was it because of that he could not come back home? Joanna’s heart pounded uncontrollably in her chest at the thought.

Upon seeing Joanna’s reaction, Marvin was astounded, as he had not thought that she was oblivious about that matter.

However, it did not need to take more time for Marvin to understand such a response. He thought that it was a normal reaction to show by Joanna, as there was a high possibility for General von Rodega not to tell a matter that might make her worried, especially when she was recuperating. If so, then should he tell her more about that? Marvin contemplated.

"The next day after the incident, I was summoned to have an audience with His Majesty, and I was invited as a witness for what had happened the night before." Marvin decided to share that with Joanna, as he thought that there was nothing wrong with letting her know about the matter that might not be confidential anymore as it might have spread across the castle before it spread more widely to the public ears.

"See, Ann. I am completely fine. I even could do outdoor activity the next day after that incident. A soldier must be tough." He grinned, raising both arms to either side with his hands formed into fists, a gesture to show how strong he was.

However, his intention to ease the tension of the dark-haired lady who looked so serious across where he sat was in vain as she gestured for him to continue to speak over the matter that she was eager to hear the most after praising him briefly with "I know" and giving him a thumb up.

Clearing his throat to hide his embarrassment, Marvin lowered his hands to cross them over his chest and was back to his serious demeanor. "Long story short, there were several officers in the meeting room aside from me, His Majesty, and of course General von Rodega. And all of us had heard and seen all the complaints and critics about... well... how fragile our security system." Marvin trailed off, letting out a sigh, as he had the same thought as the General of Archess.

For an enemy could usurp the capital and even the castle where the King took the reign, it was normal for one to protest vehemently, especially when one’s lives were in threat.

Staring at Joanna, who had a serious look on her face as she was listening to him speak pensively, Marvin caught worry on her face, where her brows deeply knitted, anticipating for him to speak more.

"General von Rodega strongly urged us to inflict the most unbearable pain on all the Tres that managed to be captured that night, to make them open their mouths, to reveal any information that we need to know. He himself even insisted on doing that himself, and he did."
