The General's Wife Wants to Leave-Chapter 231: Still the same man
Chapter 231: Still the same man
Due to the incident that had happened during the royal banquet, Duke John de Lara ordered the security around Joanna to be tightened, despite the fact that she had her own bodyguard, who was none other than her husband, General Canillas von Rodega.
However, the order did not come from the Duke’s initiation only but was also brought up by Canillas, who came to see him yesterday’s morning when they discussed the arrangement of their journey back to Barasca.
Even at the moment, when they rested in Greymore, two Barasca knights were planted in shifts to guard before the door of Joanna’s room. Nonetheless, personally for Joanna, even without the Barasca knights guarding for her, she was certain that she would be fine because she was with her sole companion in her room.
Glancing at her sole companion, Joanna found him lying on the bed with one arm placed on top of his closed eyes.
Different from the night when they shared room in the same inn for the first time, he had taken his position to lay on the bed without uttering any honeyed words that made her heart flutter not long after he stepped out of the bathroom.
He was quiet, still quiet, although he had shown that he was still the same man that married her, not his twin if he might have one, as he had shared a warm gesture with her, holding her hand and providing his shoulder for her head to lay on, which was enough to imply that he still cared for her and that his words were not without meaning.
But Joanna still felt there was something that bound the man from being as free as he used to. There was something that made him pull himself away from her, not able to see her in the eyes, not able to talk too much to her, although she could feel that his affection for her remained the same.
She could sense that. He was indeed her husband, the man who always cared for her since their first meeting until now, revolving around her no matter how much she pushed him to be far away from her, to leave her alone without any trace.
Placing her comb on the dressing table as she finished her night routine, Joanna made her way to lay on the bed next to the seeming to be sleeping man.
Sliding into the blanket, Joanna laid on her back. As she faced the ceiling where a certain pattern was painted, she pulled up the thick blanket until it reached her neck.
Heavy silence fell in the warm room, making the sound of crackling fire noticeable.
"Don’t be angry." Joanna decided to break the suffocating feelings that had disturbed her these past few days. Turning her head, she found the man next to her slowly lifting his arm, pulling it away from the top of his now open eyes.
"Don’t blame yourself. It was my fault. I was careless," Joanna said when she met the green eyes that were now staring at her. "I am sorry." Her low, soft voice sincerely drifted in the air.
Seeing Canillas turn to lay on one side of his body, Joanna followed suit, keeping the blanket covering until her neck.
"I have recovered. The wound has healed, and the scar will fade away soon. I know how to attend to it. Uncle Allan has also prescribed an ointment for it. So there is nothing to worry about," Joanna spoke more, facing Canillas, who remained silent, not voicing any word in return, only his eyes that moved to sweep her face deliberately.
"Did you meet His Majesty that night after the banquet?" Joanna asked, as until more than seven seconds had passed, only silence hovered over them.
Gladfully, he responded to her so that she did not feel like she spoke with the empty air.
Watching Canillas shake his head as the answer, Joanna uttered another question as if trying to bend the stiff atmosphere between them, aside from quenching her curiosity. "So you came back to find me before meeting His Majesty?" And Canillas answered with a nod.
"How did you know where I was?" Joanna gave another inquiry as the man before her was still stingy with his voice, even though his warm gaze was hers to feel. It was also another question that piqued her curiosity, and she had wanted to ask him.
"That woman told me." Joanna finally heard his deep voice that was spoken in a barely audible volume but clear enough for Joanna to have her eyes wide open.
"Clara de Lorn?" Joanna asked, slightly lifting her head from the pillow. The tone of her slightly raised voice was laced in disbelief.
She needed confirmation that that woman was referred to the lady she had just mentioned, as there were none other than that lady who knew the direction of her whereabouts were. Because when the fake maidservant was in action to lure her, there were only her and Lady de Lorn in the powder room.
As the man before her confirmed with a yes, the memory of what happened and all the conversation between her and that lady that night surfaced in her mind.
"Did you talk a lot with her?" Joanna put her head back on the pillow, slightly pulled down the blanket, and took her hands out of the coverage. She then pulled the hem of the blanket up again before hugging it over her chest.
"No," Canillas replied, as whatever was said by that lady in her delusional conversation was not remembered by him, except for one thing that piqued his curiosity. "But she said that you left with a man."
Joanna felt glad to finally hear Canillas giving the longest answer in the conversation they were having at the moment, yet she could not help but bewildered at the same longest answer that she just heard.
"No," Joanna retorted, slightly lifting her head from the pillow again. Her brows were deeply furrowed. "I left with a disguised maidservant. A woman, not a man," Joanna clarified, while deep down she scolded Clara de Lorn for telling a lie, although surprisingly she did not tell a lie about her whereabouts.
Watching the lady lying next to him showing a protesting look, a smile appeared on Canillas’ face, which did not miss Joanna’s complaining eyes, causing her to calm down and rest her head back on the pillow.
"I thought what she meant was Captain Zilberman," Canillas opined, finding Joanna back to show her furrowing brows.freewebnσvel.cѳm
