Chapter 232: Happy lady

It was his opinion that that delusional lady did not lie to him about Joanna’s direction, as she was highly likely to consider his words were not an empty threat. Yet she still dared to test the water, choosing to give an answer that was not far from the fact that she had seen, which she thought would create a ripple of misunderstanding and conflict in his relationship with his wife.

"How could Captain Zilberman be with you?" Joanna heard Canillas ask when she was still bewildered by the answer that was given by Clara de Lorn to her husband.

As the man before her folded his one arm to use it as an additional pillow for his head to lay on, Joanna answered, "Marvin said he saw a suspicious woman, and he tailed me when he found me walking out of the powder room to follow that woman."

While answering, Joanna was back to wonder if Marvin had become one factor that caused Canillas’ behavior to change since that incident happened, just like she presumed before, aside from being irked with her recklessness and disappointed in himself because he thought that he was late to rescue her.

Her opinion of the latter presumption was not baseless but strongly based on the way he acted abnormally since they conversed in her room after his long absence. His eyes averted away every time his gaze landed on her face and her neck, where the scar was left and could be seen clearly when there was nothing worn to hide it.

Taking the chance to clear up any misunderstanding, although she doubted if there was any, Joanna narrated all the story that was shared by Marvin about how he could find her. While narrating the whole story without adding or deducing the fact that she acknowledged as she tried to be honest with him, Joanna studied Canillas’ expression as she wanted to know if he believed what she said and not misunderstand her relationship with Marvin.

"Marvin is like a brother to me. He is a nice person. He just wanted to protect me. No other intention than that," Joanna stated as she still found the man before her, watching her speak in silence. It made her doubt whether he listened to all the story she shared or he thought that she spoke non-sense, not believing every word she uttered honestly.

But then she found her worry dissipated because her husband did listen to her, as he was now smiling and nodding his head. Before long, her heart palpitated in her chest when he reached out his other hand that was not used as the pillow toward her direction.

That gesture alone made Joanna relieved that the trace of doubt that lingered inside her evaporate into vapor. It also indicated that the man who was lying on the bed with her and staring into her eyes warmly was undoubtedly her husband, the prominent General of Archess named Canillas von Rodega, who liked to shower her with his affection and had run to her, leaving behind the call of meeting that was made by the sovereign of her homeland.

"Good to know that my wife is surrounded with good people who care for her." It was the comment that Joanna heard, but the reaction she could only make was being frozen like a statue, although she had predicted and prepared for what would come when his hand lay on her head.

Feeling her head being gently caressed and a few strands of her hair being tucked behind her ear by the man who shared a bed with her, causing his fingers to brush her earlobe, Joanna struggled to find words to reply to him. At a certain moment she could only stare at him with her lips slightly agape, staring at him, who was now caressing her cheek with his smiling eyes on hers.

"Uhm... I..." Despite feeling headaches due to the loud sound of her drumming heart, Joanna tried to calm her nerves, attempting to find words to respond to him, although it turned fruitless as her heart and mind worked against each other.

Blinking her eyes with her lips open and close several times, Joanna felt breathing was also hard to do at the moment, as she kept staring at the smiling face that was not a full length of her arm away while perceiving the feathering movement of the back of his fingers on her fragile cheek.

"Marvin is the son of Sir Sylvester." Softly gulping after the hand that caressed her cheek was pulled back to be placed under his head, joining his other hand as an extra pillow for his head to lay on, Joanna managed to find words along with her heart that still beat wildly in her chest.

"Really?" came a genuine surprise response from the man, who caused havoc in her heart. With his brows arched, as if he really never thought that the news she shared ever existed, he stared at her, waiting for his curiosity to be quenched.

Joanna nodded her head vigorously, relieved that he listened more to her and that what she shared piqued his interest. Trying to appear as calm as she could manage, hiding her rebel heart that kept on pounding in her chest erratically, as if refusing to be tamed, she said, "That’s why my brother and I can be friends with Marvin. Among many other knights’ kids, my brother can only be a good friend with Marvin. But as I grew older, I understood why they could be best friends and get along until now." As that having been said, Joanna slightly moved forward as she was about to give discreet information.

"Because Marvin is not only a patient person but also the only person who can endure my brother’s cheekiness." A giggle escaped Joanna’s lips, and she moved back to her previous position after delivering that important information, hugging the blanket over her chest with a broad smile spread across her face.

Watching the happy lady before him, Canillas was stunned before a warm smile plastered on his lips. "So what about my wife? Is my wife a cheeky person as well?" Canillas asked. A teasing tone could be felt in his voice. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Shaking her head, Joanna replied, "No, I am not. A cheeky person should be able to return every cheekiness that comes from a cheeky person. A cheeky person would not run and cry every time she was teased heavily by another cheeky person." And Canillas chuckled hearing the answer from his happy wife, who joined in the laughter that broke silent awkwardness in the room afterwards.

A few moments later, the room was plunged into silence as the smiling husband and wife held each other’s eyes, speaking a language that only both of them knew what it was.
