Chapter 221
THE DAY BEFORE THE GALA
***Author’s note: Sorry about the delayed Chapter updates. You are getting 5 Chapters today I promise. I was called into work early to sub for another teacher, so I didn’t get to finish or post this one like a I planned***
When Ambrose told Odette about the rogues and the interrogation, he may have left out exactly how brutal his extraction method was.
"Seriously, Ambrose. Do you think they’ll make a move at the Gala?"
"I don’t think they’d be stupid enough to move here, but there will be other territories that are going to be left less guarded with their alphas away. I’m trying to come up with a solution to protect them from attacks while they’re vulnerable."
"I could ask my father to help." Odette offered.
"That won’t be necessary. Vampires guarding shifters from other shifters. That sounds like insanity." Ambrose laughed.
"Well, it’s real, you are about to have shifters fighting along side vampires. We could host them nearby, that way they’re at least available for the possibility of an attack." Odette’s offer was sounding even more reasonable, and like the solution he’d been searching for.
"Okay, say I do agree, what makes you so confident the vampires won’t betray you and join the attack?"
"Mammy. My grandpa. My dad." She answered flatly. Like the answer was so obvious. But Ambrose didn’t understand vampire politics.
"Mammy is the queen of all who are damned, Ambrose, she’s literally the most terrifying thing in our world. Grandpa was king for years and has folk lores written about him. Entire histories altered but hold his name. My father. He’s got temper issues and they all know it. And me. Well, they think I can drain the life from them if they get too close to me. So. That’s good enough reason to listen and do what your told." She lectured him.
"You’re not wrong, your... Mammy..." Ambrose bit back a chuckle "Is one scary ass woman."
"I know. Her fire can burn cities, if she really means too." Odette smiled proudly. She loved her Mammy. To her, she was the strongest woman, in literal sense of the term.
"Yeah. That part." Ambrose and Odette laughed.
The time seemed to fly by and in a blink, it was the night before the Gala.
Odette had asked her father about using the vampires as back up protecting valuable packs that would be aiding them in the war and left vulnerable while their alpha’s were away.
"That’s a lot to ask for. But if anyone can make it happen its Lilith." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"That’s what I said."
"Cause you know the others will be reluctant to agree and even trust to keep the peace."
"Yeah, but if Mammy threatens them, they’ll listen."
"Most likely, yes. I’ll talk with Vlad and Lilith and see what we can do on short notice." Ash explained to her.
Lilith and Vlad did agree. They too thought it was weird that the rogues would sniff around here knowing there’s going to be a lot of military and alpha presence that night, it would be dumb to make a move here, but if they tried to make them think the rogues would be dumb enough, they’d be looking at the wrong weak spots to protect. And agreed, despite the animosity, having these packs for the upcoming war was important enough to make a move on their end.
So, over the next few days Ash and Odette worked with their family on assembling a hidden force of vampires to protect certain packs from the possibility of attack while their alphas were away.
Ambrose realized that when the time came to talk this through with his council, the fact they did this is signs of good faith, and if he has to reveal the truth about what happened the day of the massacre and ruin his family image to fix their view, he would. Slowly Ambrose was coming to terms with his new reality.
That he was about to be related to vampires. He wasn’t just making one his Luna, he was joining a clan.
Things were moving fast but with surprising ease.
Odette had been training every night with her father and Arya and Artemasia were hard at work on creating a seal for the meteorite.
It was the day before the gala. And everyone had been busy; no one noticed the human sulking around the shadows of the palace.
Kalvin had slowly lost his mind over what happened. Having his dreams and life plans ripped apart in front of him. Losing not just Odette, but also Delilah and the entire families support, he was crumbling under the weight of his actions. Kalvin had been shunned even by his own mother. And when his father finds out... He didn’t even want to broach that subject. All he could really think about was Odette. How he fucked up. How he should have been better to her. Then maybe she would have picked him. Like she did in the past. She picked another man, not the dog. They were supposed to rule together.
He had to cook up a plan. Each day he spent moving in silence thinking... plotting...
He had heard earlier that King Ambrose and King Asher were having a meeting later, and Odette was going to be by the garden, helping finalize the decorations. She was practicing a glamour. A small simple one, she just changed her hair to blonde because it was an easy color with how light her hair already was and she didn’t want to blow her cover, but Artemasia had taught her just recently the spell she used to alter her appearances.
He listened intensely came up with the idea, to make a trap for Odette. Before the Gala, he’d take her away. Just like Ambrose did him. And he’d make her see reason. He would. He would show her exactly what she needed. Him.
And if she didn’t.
Well, if he can’t have her... No one can... that was one thing he was positive about.
