The Heiress Spoiled by Four Brothers and One Devilish CEO-Chapter 228 She Took the Bullet
Before Megan Shaw showed up, Tristan Reid had been staying alone in the presidential suite, quietly drowning in his loneliness.
But now, with Megan by his side, the gloom on his face had lifted, replaced by warmth and light.
Every morning, he’d hold her close while they watched the sunrise, and at sunset, they’d sit together, taking in the fading light.
He had a phrase stuck in his head to sum up those days: peace and simplicity.
But peace didn’t last long—just three short days.
Then came President Charles Cooper’s top-level order: a nationwide manhunt.
Suddenly, police stations everywhere kicked into high gear, going door-to-door for inspections.
The order was confidential, but the operation was massive.
Outside the neighborhood where Nathaniel Cooper and Nicole Flynn lived, dozens of police officers suddenly swarmed the entrance.
The driver, immediately spotting the cops, parked downstairs and called Nathaniel to alert him.
His first thought was that the woman asleep next to him had sold him out.
Fuming, he yanked her hair. The pain made Nicole scrunch her brows tightly and let out a pained gasp. “That hurts!”
“You traitor! You betrayed me!”
Nicole gripped his wrist tightly. “Nathaniel, what are you talking about? I didn’t sell you out!”
He pulled harder, every nerve in her body screaming from the pain.
“There’re cops swarming outside. How do you explain that?”
“I don’t know anything about it! I seriously don’t!”
Nathaniel dragged her over to the window by the hair. “What do you think would happen if I tossed you from the 28th floor?”
Tears streamed down Nicole’s face. “I swear, I don’t know why this is happening.”
Nathaniel clenched his jaw so hard his molars creaked, tongue pressing behind his teeth. His voice was a low growl, “If you did betray me, I won’t hesitate.”
He called the driver. “Get Lee Carter ready.”
Quickly putting on his clothes, he glanced back at Nicole. “What are you doing? You waiting for me to really throw you out the window?”
Nicole sobbed as she got dressed, “Might as well die. You never believed in me anyway.”
Nathaniel walked over and pulled her into a tight hug. “If you didn’t betray me, I’ll treat you right for the rest of your life. But if you did, I’ll end you myself.”
Her face stayed emotionless, but inside, her heart was pounding wildly.
This was it. Make or break.
She quickly got dressed, and the two of them took the elevator down.
“What about my family?”
Nathaniel frowned. “We can’t worry about them now. Just warn them not to talk.”
Once the elevator reached the first floor and the doors opened, they saw a bunch of police officers gathered at the entrance, getting ready to come in.
“Where’s Lee Carter? Why isn’t he here yet?”
Sweat beaded on Nathaniel’s forehead. “He’ll be here any second.” His hand was already inside his pocket, ready for anything.
Just as an officer reached for the door handle, someone yelled from outside, “We’ve got Nathaniel Cooper’s trail! Move!”
The group of officers quickly cleared out. Nathaniel grabbed Nicole and rushed to the door, cracked it open to scan quickly, then darted out when the coast was clear.
He yanked open the car door and pushed Nicole in, sliding in right after.
“Drive!”
The driver glanced at him through the rearview mirror, noting his stormy expression.
“Boss, heading back to base?”
Nathaniel glanced at Nicole. “Drive around first, don’t go back.”
The driver went silent.
After all, the base was their last fallback. If that place got exposed, they were dead meat.
Clearly, Nathaniel still didn’t fully trust Nicole—he was testing her.The driver kept one hand on the wheel while watching Lee’s movements.
Moments later, a deafening blast shook the air, making Nicole jump in her seat.
Nathaniel let out a low chuckle. “Pretty sure he’s gone for good this time.”
Lee was just his decoy—blowing him up was part of the plan to slip away clean. With no DNA left to test after the explosion, what people saw was all they could believe.
Nathaniel had plenty of these escape plays up his sleeve. Not because anyone was loyal—they just had too much to lose. He had their families in his grip.
The driver frowned. “Boss, there’s a checkpoint ahead. We’ll need to detour.”
Nathaniel gave a brief nod. “Do it.”
But every road was blocked the same way.
Trapped, the driver rolled down the window and asked the driver in the next car, “What’s going on?”
“Heard some bank robbers are on the run. Checkpoints are everywhere.”
Gunshots rang out, and someone screamed, “It’s the robbers! They’ve got guns! Run!”
Panic spread like wildfire. People ditched their rides and bolted.
Nicole latched onto Nathaniel’s arm. “What do we do now?”
Nathaniel jerked his chin toward the front. “Drive through. If we stall, those thugs might hit us.”
Spinning the wheel hard, the driver swung into the emergency lane, barreling straight ahead. They hit a bandit head-on.
The guy was quick—he leaped up, landing on the hood and scaling toward the roof.
Once on top, he started smashing the windshield with brutal force. Nicole’s scream pierced the chaos.
Gun in hand, the robber aimed at the window and fired.
Bullets slammed into the glass, loud and brutal. Nicole kept screaming, terrified.
The armored window was cracking under the pressure—it wouldn’t hold much longer.
Just before the next shot, Nicole leapt in front of Nathaniel to shield his head.
A muffled bang—the sound of a bullet meeting flesh.
Nicole let out a dull groan, and all the strength drained from her hands.
Nathaniel immediately raised his gun and fired at the attacker, but the guy jumped off and escaped untouched.
Looking down at the blood-soaked woman in his arms, fear seized Nathaniel’s chest.
He glanced at his palm—it was bright red.
He barked at the driver, “Get back to base!”
Fading in and out, Nicole heard those words and knew—she’d done her part.
Back at the hotel’s presidential suite.
Tristan and Megan sat in front of the laptop, headphones on, listening closely.
Megan looked up. “He trusts her.”
Tristan nodded slightly. “He does. Nicole took a hit for that.”
“If we bring down Nathaniel Cooper, the credit’s all hers.”
Megan cupped his face gently. “Babe, your plan was genius. Even Nathaniel didn’t see it coming.”
Tristan gave her a quick kiss on the tip of her nose. “Men crumble under emotional debt. Nathaniel’s no exception. And me? I’m even worse. Megan, once our baby’s born, let’s have that wedding.”
“Really? What about that ‘three more kids’ thing you mentioned?”
Tristan pulled her in. “Don’t be silly. One’s already tough on you. How could I ask for more?”
“I’d do it for you,” Megan murmured, nestled against him. “So... what’s next? Nicole’s back at the base. We should have the coordinates now.”
Tristan stared at the blinking red dots on the map onscreen, thinking. “We still need to pinpoint his other bases. He’s bound to check each one. If we’re lucky, Nicole’ll stick with him. Once we’ve tracked them all, we end this in one hit.”
