Chapter 403: Trusted friends

The store clerk led the three of them to a different section of the store, removing a shelf that had a door behind it, which led to a small but cozy room. In that room, there was a large mat and a sofa on said mat.

The man moved the sofa, then the mat, and that revealed a hidden trap door that led underground.

"In here, hurry." He urged them.

They quickly descended down the stairs, and the man closed the door, not following behind. He set everything back to the way it was and then continued his day as the store clerk as if nothing had happened.

"I’ve never known about this place," Osiren said as he followed behind Sekmala.

"I didn’t tell you all everything. No matter how much I trust you, a leader must always keep at least one secret. This is one of them. Horisia, Princess Isia, and that bastard Setton don’t know about this place either."

Kai thought that was extremely smart. This allowed her to have at least one lifeline that wasn’t compromised. It also made sense why she decided to come here instead of any known resistance spots. Known to other resistance members at least.

"Can you trust these people?" Kai asked. For all he knew, they could be compromised as well

"With my life," Sekmala responded without any hesitation. "These people had my back when times were hard, and we’ve always been there for each other."

"Alright. Let’s meet these trusted people then."

Soon, at the end of the corridor, the three of them were met by another door. Sekmala did a specific knock to alert the people on the inside that it was her at the door.

A slit in the door opened, and lips popped out. "Password."

"Deez Nuts."

The slit closed shut, then the door swung open. "Sekmala! It’s so good to see you!" A woman stepped out to hug Sekmala, embracing her friend whom she hadn’t seen in a while.

"Heh, it’s nice to see you too, Basty. It’s been too long. How’s everything going on your end?"

Basty’s expression hardened. She pulled Sekmala inside the room along with Osiren and Kai and closed the door behind her, locking it.

"Everything isn’t going well, Sekmala. Flexom’s grip on the country is growing tighter every day. The nobles who side with him are all enjoying their new freedom and are prospering while their people suffer. As for the nobles who didn’t side with him, they are struggling or being...taken care of. It’s horrible. This doesn’t even include the demons he decided to work with."

A grim expression appeared on Sekmala’s face. She didn’t expect things to be this bad on the West Side.

This was on top of the curfews, increased taxes, the reintroduction of slavery, and the constant policing from the soldiers and demons that led to the death of innocents every day.

"Have you been able to get word from the spies we placed in the royal court?" Sekmala asked

Basty shook her head. "After the last message they sent, the one about a war, we haven’t heard from them. I’m afraid they have been either captured, killed, or have to keep silent so they don’t blow their cover."

"And what of the branch of the resistance we have here?"

"Compromised." A voice came from behind. Another woman stepped out of the shadows, blood covering her body and face as she sat down on the couch. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Hathora! Are you okay?" Sekmala and Basty rushed to her side.

"Don’t worry, it’s not my blood."

"Then get the fuck off my couch! And clean it as well, you inconsiderate pinecone!"

’How does she know what a pinecone is?’ It honestly didn’t matter how she knew what a pinecone was, but that question popped up in Kai’s mind.

"I will, I will, later. Let me relax first. Oh, hello, Prince Osiren. I’m glad to see that you’re still doing well."

"Hello, Lady Hathora." Osiren didn’t know who she was, but since she was a friend of Sekmala, he would treat her with the utmost respect.

"Oh, he’s polite. You’ll make a fine king once we put you back on the throne. Who’s this hottie right here?" Hathora asked as she locked eyes with Kai.

"Sup, I’m Kai. I’m here to help."

"You can help me with something, alright." Hathora but her lips, and puffed out her chest, showing her large, jiggling boobs.

"Y’all got an extra room in this place?" If she was down, Kai was down as well. That’s how he rolled.

"Kai, we’re not here for you to have sex. And Hathora, stop leading him on. He’ll literally hold you up to the offer. He has many wives." Sekmala was here for business, not to watch her friend and Kai have sex.

Besides, she was a bit jealous. She wouldn’t admit that, though.

"Aw. Okay. Important stuff first." Hathora mouthed ’later’ to Kai, and he gave her a wink.

"So, whose blood is on your body?" Basty asked.

"The blood of our beloved resistance. I went to our base to gather some intel, then boom, I was attacked. I killed a lot of them, injured most, and then made my grand escape. I have no idea why I got attacked, though."

"It’s Setton," Sekmala explained everything, leaving out no details.

"That bastard. I always knew he was sketchy!" Hathora clenched her fists.

"No, you didn’t, shut up."

"We need to find out who’s still on our side and send them back to Sunspot City. We managed to liberate the eastern side, but still suffered heavy losses." Sekmala was still angry at what happened under her watch and wished she could go back in time.

Kai could, but he didn’t care enough to do that. However, he didn’t mind helping them find out who was still on their side and who wasn’t.

"Let’s head to the base right away. The quicker we move, the higher the chances we can save our people."

Kai interjected. "They most likely wont be at the base. If we’re to assume they were attacked off guard like the others were, then the survivors are probably roaming around the city right now or are trying to find a way to head to the eastern side of the continent, where they know it would be safer than here."

"He has a point."

"Let’s get moving."
