Chapter 446: An apology

"Please! Please spare me! I beg you!" There was only one assassin left out of the group that tried to kill Kai and Karumi. He was on the ground, injured and surrounded by the bodies of his comrades.

"Hmmm." Kai crouched, looking the man in the eyes. He was thinking about what to do with him.

"I say we chop him up and feed him to the wolves!" Karumi growled

"That’s not a bad idea," Kai admitted, scaring the assassin. "But I have a better idea." He grabbed the throat of the assassin, lifting him up.

"Tell your boss that if he wants to fuck with me, he’ll have to send men stronger than you clowns. I’m sure he noticed that I killed the last batch of assassins sent after me, judging by the fact that you lot were stronger than the last."

"Yes! I will tell him this! I promise!"

Kai smiled. "Good. Now, clench your butt."

"H-Huh? Why?"

Kai didn’t explain. He simply threw the guy in the direction where their assassin base, at least where he thought it was. Honestly, he just threw the guy in a random direction, hoping that it was close to their base.

"Alright, let’s continue our trek back to the estate now."

---

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-OOOOOOOOOOOOF!" The assassin landed near the base of his headquarters, his face sinking into the snow as he fell face-first.

"Fuckk!" He pulled his head out of the snow, his face stinking from the cold. "That bastard could have just let me walk back here. Dammit."

He made his way around the corners, maneuvering through the streets until he entered the establishment that also doubled as their base of operations. After giving a bartender a coin, he walked up to the second floor, then entered a secret door that led to a secret room.

"Your report?" A man behind a desk asked

"Utter failure, boss. The guy is insanely powerful. We stood no chance at all. H-He killed everyone as if they were helpless children. The only reason I’m alive is that he wanted me to tell you to stop sending losers like us. Boss, I’m a tier-8 warrior. How am I a loser?"

The boss couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Handling multiple tier-8 warriors was no easy feat. This meant that Kai was beyond what they expected. He was too strong a target.

"We will forgo this request and return the money the prince gave us."The boss had a feeling that this was the right thing to do.

"But boss! The prince isn’t gonna be happy about this!"

"It’s better than sending all of my assassins to their deaths. Who’s going to work for me if all of you are dead?" He got up from his chair and put on a cloak.

"I’m going to see the Second Prince. Inform everyone of our conversation."

"Yes, boss."

---

The second prince was in his room, going over papers, when he felt the breeze from outside flow inside. He knew he had closed and locked his window, so this could only mean one thing.

"Is it done?" The prince asked

"No. We cannot fulfill this request."

The prince did not like that answer. "Cannot? Or will not?"

"Cannot. The target, Kai, wiped out a whole squad of tier-7 and 8 assassins with no effort at all. He even allowed one of my assassins to live just so he could tell me to send better assassins to come after him. Sorry, prince, but someone like that is way above our means, and I’m not gonna send my best assassins to their deaths."

The boss assassin placed the chest of gold that the prince had given him days prior.

"Every single coin is still there. Since we couldn’t complete the request, you get a refund. Good luck. And if I could give you some advice, it would be not to mess with this guy. If he can wipe out a whole Duke family with ease, then he’s not some grunt that can be dealt with by means such as assassination."

The boss left as if he wasn’t there in the first place.

’Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Why isn’t everything going my way?! First, that bastard disrespects me in front of everyone, kills the assassins I sent after him, and now, my fucking younger brother has the love and support of the people! Fuck!’

The second prince calmed his mind before he did something he knew he would regret.

"Pretty crazy, huh?" A voice came from behind the prince.

He made a sword out of mana and aimed it at the voice’s head. But when he saw who it was, his eyes widened.

"K-Kai?! H-How are you here?"

"I just walked inside. It’s as if no one saw that I was walking among them. But is your temper tantrum over now?"

The second prince didn’t answer. "Are you here to kill me? Don’t think it will be as easy as wiping out a ducal family. I’m the second prin—"

Kai cut off the guy’s head before he could finish. But then, he reattached it, giving Philip life again.

"Ahh! Haah! W-What? What did you do to me?" Philip felt as if he had died and come back to life.

"I killed you, then brought you back to life," Kai explained the feelings Philip was having

"T-That’s impossible! U-Unless you’re a dark mage!"

"Pwahaha! No, I’m not a dark mage or whatever. Just listen, man, don’t fuck with me or what I’m doing. Trust me, I don’t wanna kill you...again. Just accept your fate."

Philip could feel the intensity of Kai’s stare, and he wanted no part of that. He now understood what the assassin boss meant when he said not to mess with him.

"Okay, you win. I apologize." He bowed to Kai.

"That’s more like it. You see, uncontrolled ambition is the root of all evil in the world. Sometimes, you just have to spread your arms and be free. Let me give you some advice. Being a king or whatever, bullshit. What are you going to do when someone is stronger than you? Nothing. A title without power is absolutely nothing."

"But I could command an army." Philip pointed out.

"Yeah, and what if they don’t follow your orders? Sure, you could kill them or send them to prison, but what if they are too strong? What if there are others who agree with them? Real power is when no one can stand up to you. You’re a prince, but you’re nothing to me. So, become strong and don’t be blinded by a seat that you’ll eventually have to give up."

Philip didn’t understand why Kai was helping him in a way, but he honestly thanked him. He had never seen life in that lens, and it was an eye-opener.

"Thank you for enlightening me!" All of his anger and hatred were gone just like that.

"No problem. Okay, bye now."
