Chapter 232: The time is right (4)

Tobias arrived at Kenneth’s home after more than an hour’s ride. His anger remained but he wasn’t planning on letting it out on Kenneth as it should only be on Grant. Unless Kenneth was also in on Grant’s plans.

He was made to wait as a guard took notice of his arrival back to the mansion and then was let in after the guard returned.

By the time the carriage got near the front doors, Kenneth was waiting outside for him with his wife standing by the door. This was the first time Tobias had ever personally visited Kenneth so he imagined that the two were worried something had happened.

"This is a surprise," Kenneth said as Tobias stepped out of the carriage. "Did something happen to Hazel?"

Tobias looked at Kenneth’s wife standing by the door. It was evident that she was worried. He did not want to bring her into the mess he came to speak about with Kenneth. "Hazel is fine. I need to speak to you in private. You can reassure your wife that nothing is wrong."

Despite what Tobias said, Kenneth still got the feeling that there was trouble. Why else would the king come to him? The ride to get here wasn’t a pleasant one which Kenneth liked because he wouldn’t get any visitors so for Tobias to be standing here, something was wrong.

"Excuse me," Kenneth said, taking the opportunity to go to Tessa. She was already on edge that either he or their sons would be sent to the border so Tobias’ arrival didn’t help keep her calm.

"Why is the king here?" Tessa questioned.

"It is nothing to worry about. I forgot that I was to speak to him about which men I would send to protect Hazel. I must speak with him in private and send who we pick off with him. I made a mistake and must apologise for him coming here. That is all," Kenneth explained, his lies pricking his chest for not being honest with her.

Tessa squinted her eyes, suspicious because it wasn’t like Kenneth to make such a mistake. "You know that I don’t like it when you lie to me. I expect an honest answer when the king leaves. I will get the butler to prepare drinks for you two. This is his first time here so we must treat him well."

"I don’t think he is here for a drink," Kenneth replied.

"Still, it is best that we offer him something. He looks impatient so take him to the drawing room while I prepare something. He had a long trip here so treat him well," Tessa said, kissing Kenneth’s cheek before leaving his side.

"The king comes and suddenly your kisses are no longer on my lips," Kenneth said, a little too loud.

Tobias looked away from the pair, finding it uncomfortable to watch. "Please don’t do that before me again. I won’t be able to look at you the same."

"How do I feel when I have to watch you act a fool around Hazel? Follow me," Kenneth said, leading the way to the drawing room. "My wife is going to get something for you to drink and she will end up bringing food so accept it."

"I was raised with manners. I am nothing like the scoundrels you have for sons," Tobias replied.

With how comfortably he spoke with Kenneth, Tobias hoped that Kenneth didn’t share the same plan as Grant. Tobias continued to believe for the moment that Kenneth was on his side since no one ever spoke of the first time Hazel had lost a baby.

"What is it that caused the king to come to me?" Kenneth questioned as soon as they entered the room.

"I had a visit from your father earlier. He suggested that I take Linda as my woman," Tobias revealed.

Tobias watched Kenneth’s reaction and judging from the fact that Kenneth went from shocked to angry, it might be that Grant was making these plans alone. "You didn’t know."

"Of course, I didn’t know. I would never agree to make Linda your woman. Why should my daughter become known as the king’s woman? What did you tell him?" Kenneth questioned, hoping Tobias wasn’t a fool to come here to get him to agree to it.

"I love my wife. Only my wife," Tobias replied, annoyed with Kenneth for being asked what he told Grant. "He made it clear that he will come to war to get what he wants. He might even join our enemies as long as he could get one of your sons on the throne. I came here to know which side you are on."

Kenneth had to take a seat as this wasn’t news he could take standing. "My father has been causing trouble amongst my family. I didn’t know he was looking to cause trouble elsewhere. He knows that I will side with the Castros. It is what I swore to and if what you said is true, he has placed himself as the enemy of the kingdom."

"He looked quite confident that you would be on his side. He is your father so I wouldn’t be surprised if your loyalty switches one day, but I want to hear from you now. Can I trust you, Kenneth? Should he continue down this path, will you stay on my side?" Tobias asked.

It was a lot to ask of Kenneth when it was just the start, but Tobias needed to know. He respected Kenneth enough that should he say he would continue to be on Castro’s side, Tobias would believe him.

"I will not have my men attack the kingdom so my father can have the throne. None of my sons want to be king and I will not have my daughter enter the palace as your woman. I need a moment to think," Kenneth said as there were too many things on his mind.

He couldn’t think of what to do and speak to Tobias at the same time.

Tobias sat down, awaiting when Kenneth would be ready to speak on what they would do from here.

"Allow me to speak with him before you do anything," Kenneth requested.

It had been some time since he spoke with his father after something Liam shared with him years ago, but he still visited to see his mother. Had he spoken to his father during those years, he might have been around to stop this plan Grant came up with.

"Allow me to speak to him. To get him to take back his words and plans. If he doesn’t agree, then I will work with you to stop him before he goes to your enemies," Kenneth offered.

Kenneth couldn’t allow his father to start a war in the kingdom. If it spread around that Grant wanted to go against the king, his family would be looked to as traitors and then his children would have an unpleasant time in this town and wherever they moved.

Tobias was more interested in killing Grant off now to end this before it grew but he owed Kenneth so he would let Kenneth speak to Grant first. "Bring me some good news after you speak to him. I don’t want a fight within my kingdom."
