The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 238: The ball (4)
Chapter 238: The ball (4)
"Did you enjoy your walk with her?" Tobias asked.
Hazel continued to watch as Edgar walked away with Alessandra. She liked the two together regardless of whether anyone thought Alessandra’s status was too low for Edgar. "I did. I want to invite her to the palace. Have a day with her and Linda. She would do well running the social circles of this town, don’t you think?"
"I don’t see that," Tobias said as Alessandra didn’t seem like a little social butterfly. "Edgar wouldn’t like it."
"It is not for him to like and husbands tend to bend to rules for their wives. If she wants to, Edgar will allow it. Remember my words," Hazel said, turning her attention back to Tobias. "Am I not the only one who controls the king?"
Tobias now saw how Alessandra got Edgar to attend the ball. "You women will be the death of us."
"At least you would have enjoyed your life before that death," Hazel replied. "I would like to dance with you when the next dance starts. Who knows when the next opportunity for us to dance will come."
"We can dance whenever you want, Hazel. I am the king so I can snap my fingers and have music played for us to dance. Why are you frowning?" Tobias asked as her reaction wasn’t what he had expected.
"Can you snap your fingers and have more time to be with me? You are always busy and it is not your doing. With the tension at the border and the women going missing. There is so much for you to do that I rarely see you. Perhaps I should take your offer to go on a trip," said Hazel.
It would be the only way for her to see him as much as she wanted but then the court and the town would not like that the king was away from the throne. They didn’t have any children but it felt like they did.
Still, Hazel would deal with the complaints when the time came.
"For your birthday, we should take a trip out of town. My family has a mansion in the countryside that we can use or we can visit Helena. I’ve missed so much about her wedding and now as her belly grows bigger with another child. Would you like that?" Hazel asked.
Tobias’s relationship with Helena had improved over time and now Helena even sent letters to Tobias. Since Helena now lived in the countryside as a viscountess, Hazel couldn’t see her and then her parents would be with Helena often.
"We can make a stop there and go to other towns," Tobias agreed.
"Can I come too?" Sofia asked as she would love nothing more than to see the kingdom.
Hazel smiled, not wanting to be the one to ruin Sofia’s excitement. This was something she wanted to do with just Tobias.
"No," Tobias bluntly responded. "Go find your mother."
"Our mother," Sofia replied. "You’re all no fun."
’The next trip we take I will be more than happy to take you with us. I promise," Hazel said, offering her hand for them to shake on it.
"Why are you much better than my brother?" Sofia asked, shaking Hazel’s hand. She stuck her tongue at Tobias only for him to cover her mouth.
"That is not how a princess should be. Would you like me to tell mother?" Tobias asked.
Hazel moved Tobias’s hand from Sofia’s mouth to stop the two before this petty argument could get any bigger. "She is young, Tobias. You cannot expect her to act far above her age. She will grow bored of sitting up here so you must share a dance with her. Why are the guards coming to you?"
Seeing the three of them approach Tobias in a hurry, Hazel knew that they were coming to deliver bad news. Why now? Why tonight when the town was finally in good spirits?
’Don’t let it be another young woman,’ Hazel prayed.
"Your Majesty."
"This had better be urgent. I said not to disturb me unless it is important," Tobias said.
Tobias hoped that it would be nothing to take him away from Hazel after he just promised to dance with her. After hearing from her what he knew about being too busy, he couldn’t leave her now.
Why was it starting to feel like the palace or the kingdom was purposely doing something in need of his attention right when he was alone with Hazel?
"We found a young woman dead in town. We’ve already uncovered that she used to work for Duke Collins," the guard shared.
"Edgar? What the," Tobias paused, looking in the direction Edgar went with Alessandra.
It couldn’t be Edgar’s doing since he wouldn’t be so careless as to place the woman where she could easily be found and what reason did Edgar have to kill a maid of all people? Did it have something to do with Alessandra?
Tobias couldn’t picture Edgar having any kind of relationship with the maid. It could be that someone who disliked Edgar had killed the maid.
"Do you believe her to be like the other missing women?" Tobias asked.
"The way she was found isn’t like the other women," the guards answered.
Tobias was relieved as now no one could claim that Edgar was the one behind all the dead women. "Speak with the duke to find out when last he saw her and if he had any conflict with her. Do not let it spread to the guests that someone was found dead. We do not need that panicking now."
He continued, "If any of you try to take Edgar elsewhere to be questioned, come to me first."
"Understood."
"Edgar couldn’t be the person we have been looking for all this time, right? You assigned him to find out what happened to those women and he has been working hard. What if-"
"It is not him," Tobias stopped Hazel. Others would think that but they shouldn’t.
Tobias knew Edgar well enough to not think Edgar was the bastard who had taken and killed women. Edgar was neither that bored nor evil. This was the same man who wanted the case to be over with and was going out of his way to look into everyone who could have done it.
The woman the guards found tonight might have lost her life from someone else.
"They are getting ready for a new dance. Let us join them," Tobias offered his hand for Hazel to take. The best way to distract her was to dance.
