Chapter 237: The ball (3)

"It is all going well," Tobias said, holding Hazel’s hand to calm her. "They are all dancing and having a good time. She has outdone herself. Hasn’t she?" He asked Sofia.

Sofia nodded her head, agreeing with her brother, but she thought it would be better if they had allowed her to go down to speak to the few children attending the ball. What fun was it to sit here when everyone else was dancing?

Sofia knew she could convince Hazel to let her leave the throne but Tobias was overprotective and did not allow it.

"Until it is over, I cannot conclude that the ball went well. Something can happen before the ball ends. No," Hazel covered her mouth with her hand. "I shouldn’t have said that as now something will go wrong. I cannot have them add this to all that they say about me."

"Ignore what they say," Tobias suggested.

"That is easy for you to say. You are not the one they want off the throne. The one they think cannot have a child. I have to be perfect to make up for what I lack," Hazel said then regretted that they spoke of this now. "We should go back to speaking of the ball. You can share a dance with the princess first. She is eager to get away."

Sofia leaned forward as soon as she heard this but her excitement didn’t last long.

"My first dance must go to you," Tobias replied. "Mother should have come to be with you."

"I asked but she said she was not in the best mood to attend a ball and father didn’t want to come without her. This is no fun," Sofia muttered. No matter where she went she did not get to have fun.

When her parents decided to reside outside of the palace most of the time, Sofia thought it would allow her to be normal when she exited the palace but nothing seemed to have changed. Her father tried to help her feel normal but then her mother would stick to the same old rules.

"Edgar!" Tobias called his friend after noticing him.

It was a surprise that Edgar came but with the duchess excited to be here, it seemed that Edgar couldn’t turn down the invitation. Tobias had the brilliant idea to make use of Alessandra to get Edgar to listen to him.

The sudden marriage was yet to amuse Tobias but he would be a good friend and try to understand how two came to love each other.

Hazel looked down at the new duchess. She had always known that the baron’s daughter wore a mask thanks to the tales from Alessandra’s sister Kate, but Hazel could not remember ever meeting Alessandra.

The mask the duchess wore seemed like out of a book. Like a mysterious character you just needed to know more about.

As Tobias spoke with Edgar and Alessandra, Hazel tried to figure out what kind of person she might be. Just from the first glance, Hazel could tell how much Edgar loved his wife. It was like a story from one of the books she read had come to life. The stubborn man who liked to be alone married the girl everyone said to avoid.

If Alessandra was a good person, they should get along well. Their husbands were close so they would be seeing each other a lot.

"Queen Castro," Alessandra Collins greeted Hazel with a curtsy.

Hazel wished to have a more private conversation with Alessandra so she suggested they should take a walk around the ballroom and then join their husbands at the end.

"Your wife hasn’t been here long and she stole my wife," Tobias said, sighing as he joined Edgar in watching their wives. "You only came here because of your wife, didn’t you?"

"If you know the answer, why ask?" Edgar replied.

Balls weren’t something Edgar normally enjoyed as it meant he would be asked for a dance more times than he wanted to hear it. He would only attend if there was a space given for him to stand alone where no one could approach him.

"She’s doing well for someone who recently lost her father and got married in the middle of the night. Something wrong with her?" Tobias asked as enjoying a ball wasn’t how a sane person would be after losing their father. "You can’t hurt me with all the guards around."

"Don’t be so sure," Edgar replied. "Are the Hensons here tonight?"

"I haven’t seen any of them so far. They continue to keep their family disputes private so I don’t know what might be keeping them from coming to the ball. I would prefer that if there is conflict, they don’t show. I haven’t told Hazel about Grant yet," Tobias said.

Tobias knew that it would be best to warn Hazel about Grant but he had agreed with Kenneth to keep it a secret. This man was like a grandfather to her and with all that was happening with the palace awaiting them having a child, it wasn’t the right timing to add this to what was on Hazel’s mind.

"I wouldn’t share it. Some things you have to keep secret to protect them," Edgar said, watching as Alessandra and Hazel were stopped by his mother. He trusted Hazel to help Alessandra against his mother.

Tobias wanted to pat Edgar on the back. "Look at you acting like a protective husband already. Everyone knows that you are my closest ally so you will need to watch out for who approaches Alessandra. Hazel has been eager to meet with Alessandra so expect an invitation to the palace. I’m sure your wife will enjoy it."

"I’d rather she not come here too often," Edgar replied as the palace was no safe place to be. After having to put up with her stepmother and sister, his wife shouldn’t have to put up with the mess in the palace.

"I’d rather Hazel not be here but there is nothing I can do about it. They seem to be getting along well," Tobias said, enjoying seeing Hazel smile as she spoke to Alessandra.

Hazel’s smiles were rare these days and with Linda’s visits to the palace decreasing, he hoped that Alessandra could visit to keep Hazel in this good mood. Hazel needed more friends she could pass the time with. Friends she could trust and who better than the wife of Edgar to be that person?

"See, that wasn’t so hard. I brought her back in one piece," Hazel said, letting go of Alessandra’s hand so she could return to Edgar.

After her brief talk with Alessandra, Hazel was in a better mood and ready to enjoy the ball.
