Chapter 248: Not ready (3)

"If you don’t mind, I would like to have my dinner alone here," Hazel said, wiping away the tears she failed to stop.

This was not how she wished for the day to end but it had gone far beyond the point where she could save this just as she had done for Alessandra and Linda.

It had been some time throughout the day since she thought about being without a child and Tobias was not the person she wanted to mention it.

"Normally, I would grant you the space that you want, but I cannot leave your side tonight," Tobias replied.

He made the mistake too many times of leaving her alone at moments like this. Tobias could not go on doing that as she might find herself so depressed that niether he nor the doctors could help her.

"We must speak about it. No,’ Tobias added.

It was hard on Hazel with all the pressure to have a child but it wasn’t exactly easy for him to watch her self-destruct. Tobias didn’t want there to ever be a time where he looked back on this moment and regretted not pushing her to speak. Or for there to be a time that Hazel wished he had checked on her.

"I do want a child. I need one," Tobias corrected himself as his duty as king called for him to have an heir. He wasn’t going to live forever therefore he needed to have a successor to take after him. "I would love for us to add to our family but not when you are in this state"

"You are right that we cannot wait any longer. The complaints and questioning are becoming louder. The kingdom is restless waiting to celebrate the news of an heir. Should something happen to me today, my uncle would have the throne," Tobias said.

His intentions were not to stress Hazel but to show that he was very aware of the situation they were in. Still, he would put her first.

Tobias refused to listen to suggestions of having the palace doctors take a look at Hazel and suggest what they thought needed to be done to her for there to be a child. Hazel would be in a lot of pain should the wrong doctor get their hands on her.

"I will not have you become someone’s test. If we are placed in a situation where I cannot ignore the need for a child, then I will step down as king," Tobias confessed.

He still didn’t believe his uncle was the right fit for a king, but what mattered most was not hurting Hazel just to have a baby. Tobias would be satisfied spending the rest of his life with only Hazel.

Hazel couldn’t believe what she was hearing. "You cannot step down as king. Do you have any kind of idea what backlash you would face? The ridicule. Your face is not one to forget with how many portraits of you were made when you became king. I cannot have you face that."

Hazel would rather he just take another woman to his side than have to live out the rest of his life as the king who turned his back on the kingdom.

Even if they were to settle down somewhere with few people it would not be pleasant to be away from all their friends and family who were already quite comfortable living in Lockwood. It would not only affect their lives but their families as well since they would be questioned.

Hazel walked to the bed to sit down. She didn’t want to talk before but hearing the lengths Tobias was willing to go to protect her, she had to. "You don’t need to do that for me. The palace has been hard to be in for the last year or so but I am willing to put up with it."

"You are a good king, Tobias. I don’t get too upset that I don’t get to see you when I want because I know that you are working hard to make the kingdom safe. It is not like you are avoiding me. Having to watch you fall asleep the second you come to be near me will always empty any feelings from being alone," Hazel revealed.

Had Tobias been away from her simply because he had lost interest then she would not be so understanding now.

The days when he would lay on her lap and immediately go to sleep, his guard down because he trusted her was what helped her stay in the palace. Tobias needed her as much as she needed him. The kingdom also needed Tobias so she was not going to take him away from it.

"You must promise me that you will not leave the palace because of me. Promise,’ Hazel said, holding out her hand for the promise to be sealed.

Hazel had never met Tobias’s uncle as everyone repeated that he had said he would step foot back here unless it was for him to become king. Since Tobias, who wanted out of the palace, did not want his uncle on the throne in the past, Hazel knew there had to be some kind of family drama concerning this uncle.

"I am putting you first," Tobias answered, going to Hazel’s side.

"And I am grateful for how you wish to put me first but I do not want you to step down as king. There is no one more suited for this than you. It has been slow but you are getting rid of men in the palace. I know there are still many left to get rid of but I don’t expect you to do that in a few years," said Hazel.

"I feel like I have been a terrible husband. You are alone more times than I am with you and I have to depend on Linda to be near you. You can be honest with the things that I do wrong," Tobias said as he knew there was much he needed to improve.

Hazel smiled as like herself, Tobias also had something that weighed his mind. She had thought sometimes that she was the only one worrying. They were long overdue for a talk. A real talk that addressed what they felt.

"Before we got married, your mother informed me that you would not be like any other husband. That I would be sharing you with the kingdom so I was not to fall in love with you," Hazel shared, watching as Tobias turned confused. "She didn’t need to tell me that then." freёwebnoѵel.com

Hazel continued, "I still fell in love with you. I will never cry and ask you to always be by my side because I understand what you must do. The moments when you are near me are unforgettable and many times it doesn’t feel like I have been away from you for long."

Tobias had an amazing talent for making the most of the time they had together. A few minutes spent with him could feel like he was there for hours.

"I wouldn’t be kicking you out of my bedroom as often as I did when missing you a lot. When I stop kicking you out and hold onto you is when you start to worry."

Tobias couldn’t understand the logic as one of the guards who followed him had said that when a woman was upset, she would be silent and throw you out. Not clinging to you. "I don’t understand."

"In the times that you annoy me and I cling to you rather than throw you out, it is because I feel that you are hardly around and I can’t bring myself to make you leave. My mind is not in a good space right now but I am not ready to speak about it yet. So please, don’t push me," Hazel requested.

In time, she would tell Tobias of her thoughts to harm herself. It wasn’t easy as someone not in her shoes might like to think. To say those words to the person who loved you most would not help her to stop having negative thoughts.

"I promise to tell you one day just give me a little more time. Please."

"Then I will wait," Tobias responded, holding her hand. "Regardless of my duty, I will make more time for you. You have me at breakfast and dinner, but from now on, two hours outside of that I will be all yours."

"I like the sound of that," Hazel replied.

"I have a surprise that you will enjoy. It concerns flowers and something for you to be remembered by. I’ll come to you tomorrow when it is your time to have me. No one will be able to take me from your side then," Tobias promised.

He would not have Hazel be so used to his absence.

"Right now, I shall be your servant and have our dinner be brought here. I might even try reading one of your books with you. No?" Tobias replied as Hazel shook her head. "What is it in those books that you don’t want me to read? Plotting on my life?"

"Perhaps," Hazel joked.

Hazel remained on the bed while Tobias stood to find someone to send for their food. Again, his talent did wonders as the day was somehow saved, not ending with her stuck with bad thoughts.
