Chapter 259: Tea (4)

The more women Tobias heard were going missing, the more he felt like a failure. "Under my father’s ruling, this would have never gone on for so long, but I don’t have any proper leads. I am failing. This will only give those opposing me something to say to turn the people against me.’

Hazel walked to the chair Tobias sat on with his head resting on the palm of his hands. She had watched how he tired himself trying to find out what happened to the women.

Tobias had to solve this and still deal with plenty of other problems in the kingdom. They were still close to going to war at the border and to end it before it could get worse, they had to send Rafael to help.

Tobias was tiring himself out, putting the kingdom’s well-being before his own. Some days she rarely got to see him because he was trying to come up with ways to keep everyone safe though it was impossible. She could not have him think that he was a failure.

Hazel sat on his lap and said, "Tobias, I watch you every day be the best king you can be. It is not your fault this is still going on. We have some of the best people on this case and they are not able to solve it yet but they will. We will bring peace back to this land."

Tobias couldn’t find it in him to be positive right now. There was so much on their plates that they couldn’t get a break. "This is going on, you’re being pressured for a child, and now you have to deal with others wanting your best friend to become my mistress. I am failing to protect you and everyone else."

Hazel was surprised to hear Tobias bring up what she heard from men from the court and now what the maids were starting to believe as they were not speaking of it. There was more to hear about what was happening with considering Linda to become Tobias’s mistress, but right now, Hazel had something more important to focus on.

Hazel placed her hands on his cheeks to make him look up to her. He was not a failure in her eyes and he never would be. "No, you are not. I am aware of how many people wouldn’t mind me being tossed out of the palace for not having an heir yet, but you have defended, protected, or even killed them for me."

Tobias could not hide forever that he had killed someone who snuck around their bed the day after their wedding. Hazel didn’t know how many more he had killed to protect her and she wasn’t going to ask him to stop.

Hazel continued, "You have protected me from the very beginning and that is why I love you. My dear sweet king This will all get better. I promise."

"You are the best king that I know," Hazel said, kissing his right cheek and then moving to the left.

"There are only two kings that you know," Tobias said, feeling like the compliment wasn’t that wonderful.

"And of the two, you are the best. I don’t know much about what your father or other kings did during their reign-"

"That’s a lie, Hazel. I was present when you answered everything correctly during the history test in the selection. My apologies. Continue," Tobias said as it was evident she was annoyed that he had spoiled her trying to compliment him.

"How is it that you find time to annoy me when I am trying to cheer you up? Are my words working to cheer you up?" Hazel asked, her fingers toying with the first button of his shirt.

Tobias was in a better mood just from her interest in his shirt. "You are playing a dangerous game here, Hazel."

"Am I?" She feigned ignorance. Hazel slipped her hand inside his shirt thanks to the opening from undoing the button. "This game has always put you in a better mood. I am only trying to do my part in making my husband happy. Is it working?" Hazel whispered as she closed the gap to his lips.

Tobias did his part by pulling on the string at the front of her dress. "It certainly is. We must be quick-"

A knock at the door disrupted the moment. Tobias wanted to kick himself as it was his big mouth which caused this to happen.

"Ignore it," he said, placing his right hand on the back of Hazel’s neck to continue

"Queen Hazel, you must come quickly. Someone threw a stone at the Duchess."

It was muffled but Hazel was still able to make out that something happened to the duchess. Hazel leaned back, no longer interested in continuing since they had a big problem on their hands.

"The duchess is hurt," Hazel said quickly.

Tobias stared at Hazel and then yelled, "Fuck! Wait here," he said, standing up with Hazel. He carefully placed her on the table so she could stay there until his return.

Hazel watched as Tobias went to the door. She understood his anger as it upset her as well to hear that something happened to Alessandra. Why was it the duchess of all people? Why was there anything that called for anyone to get hurt?

Hazel left the women to roam on their own and this was what had to happen when she was not around? This was the perfect reason for a few of the women present to go home. Many needed to know how to act when they were in a place like this.

Tobias opened the door, finding Heather instead of a maid. "What did you say?"

If Edgar was still in the palace, Tobias knew that he could forget about Edgar looking into the woman found today and instead look to kill whoever had hurt his wife. Tobias didn’t need Edgar to be getting distracted so he was going to take care of the matter.

Tobias noticed that his tone had scared Heather as she stepped back like she feared that he would harm her.

"I was walking with the duchess and out of nowhere a stone was thrown at her. Her head has a small bruise-"

"Good fucking dammit," Tobias cursed, finding it to be more concerning. He closed the door behind him so Hazel could tie back the string of her dress without being seen by Heather or anyone passing by. "Is Edgar still in the palace?"

This was the one time that Tobias hoped his friend was far out of the palace.

Heather remembered Edgar leaving with the other men. "He left a little while ago. Do you want me to check if-"

"No," Tobias cut in as it wasn’t a good idea to send for Edgar now. He would apologise later for not calling Edgar in an urgent situation like this. He was only trying to stop his friend from having to be locked away somewhere until his anger calmed down. "Take me to the duchess now."

On the other side of the door, Hazel moved quickly to tie back the string. She would have to help with calming down everyone involved and bring the duchess somewhere private to have someone take a look at her.

"This will do," Hazel said, deciding to bring Alessandra to Tobias’s private room.

No one would disturb them here and Alessandra would be safe until Edgar would come to her side.

"Why are all the good days being ruined?" Hazel wondered.

It was as though the world did not wish to give her a break.

Hazel slid off the table and fixed her appearance so no one could assume she had done something with the king. She exited the room and looked around for where it had all happened. She chose to go to the right after seeing a maid run in that direction.

"Please don’t let her be gravely injured," Hazel whispered. If she had told the women to wait outside, no one might have gotten hurt.

The direction she picked was right as she spotted Tobias leaving Alessandra’s side with Eleanor beside him, most likely in search of the person behind this.

Hazel picked up her dress and ran toward Alessandra. "Alessandra!" She called. "Are you alright? Oh!" She covered her mouth, surprised by Alessandra’s mask being stained with blood.

Hazel reached her hand toward Alessandra’s face but stopped before she could touch the mask. She thought of how uncomfortable it must be for Alessandra to not be able to take off her mask to check the wound because she didn’t want anyone to see her face.

"I have somewhere you can be alone and I will get a doctor to provide what you need to clean the wound if you do not want anyone to look at your face. It is up to you," Hazel said, offering her hand to help Alessandra to stand.

Before others could arrive, they should take Alessandra to where she would be comfortable.

Alessandra touched her mask, fearing that it might fall off, but used her free hand to accept Hazel’s. "Thank you, Hazel."
