Chapter 272: Calm before the storm (1)

Hazel sat by the window, looking down below at the guards roaming around outside. The home was well protected for no one they didn’t want to get inside. It was peaceful to be here. More peaceful than she remembered feeling the day after the wedding when they stayed in the home belonging to a king’s former lover.

"They’ve sent away the gardeners. What if the flowers need to be cared for? They look so pretty in the snow.

Hazel thought this would be a good time for her to do a little bit of work in the garden without being judged or having her maids panicking that she was getting her dress stained with mud.

Hazel had never worked in a garden before, but she had been thinking recently that it might be a bit calming to be the one to plant the flowers she liked. The most she could do was clip a few flowers when she gathered with women during spring.

Hazel turned to Tobias lying on the bed. Since he was still asleep, she could not go out for a walk or travel beyond the gates so she needed to do something to pass the time until he woke.

Hazel stood up, trying not to make much noise to wake him. She only needed to get a coat to go outside with so she could take a look at the garden.

"Where are you going?"

Hazel stopped dead in her tracks, looking at the bed to find Tobias facing her. "I thought you were asleep and were going to let you rest."

"You never quietly leave the bed. I always wake up when you stir around. Now, where does my wife want to go?" Tobias asked.

"To the garden. From up here, the flowers poking out of the snow look wonderful. I was going to take my coat and go down there for a little walk. Try to tidy the garden. I can stay here with you," Hazel said since the garden wasn’t going anywhere.

"I will join you for the walk. You need to wear gloves as well. I don’t want you to get a cold. If we send away all the guards, we can walk around without clothes."

Hazel frowned. "You were so sweet up until what you said last. I am not doing any of the sort with you. While you may be comfortable walking around naked as you were born," Hazel said, her point proven by him walking from the bed, not using a sheet to cover himself. "I am not."

"I do not understand it since there is nothing wrong with your body and I would be the only one to see it. Why don’t we give it a try? At least indoors," Tobias proposed.

Hazel shook her head. "I will do no such thing and I don’t want to see you stepping foot outside this room without any clothes on."

"Very well," Tobias agreed. "You say that but your eyes are glued to my body now as I get dressed. Should I be slow with getting dressed so you can enjoy the show?"

"I didn’t say you cannot be naked in here. If I do not enjoy your body now, who else will?" Hazel replied.

Tobias laughed at her reasoning. "No one else will."

Hazel walked back to the bed to sit and wait for Tobias to be done with getting dressed. It would be even better to have him join her. "Is there somewhere nearby we can walk around to buy something? Anything that could remind us of our time here?"

"There should be a small market nearby but the snow might make it a headache to go there. Just take something from here and pretend that you bought it," Tobias suggested.

Hazel couldn’t believe he wanted her to steal from his friend. "You can play with your life when it comes to Edgar but I will not. If the snow gets better, we should go for a walk outside the gates. If we are lucky, no one will recognise us."

"That could be saved for the last day. I do not talk of us being here before we leave. How about I cook for you tonight?"

"You will cook? I’ve never seen you cook a day since I have married you nor have you spoken of it before. Roasting meat over a fire, when you travelled with the army, is not cooking. I would bet that it just tasted of bland burnt meat," said Hazel.

Tobias returned before Hazel with pants and his shirt in his hands. "I am a man of many talents, Hazel. Pleasing you is at the top of it. I will cook dinner tonight to prove you wrong."

"I hope Edgar won’t be too upset should this mansion catch on fire. Still, I look forward to your first time cooking for me. I cannot make the offer since I was never taught how to cook. This home is too pretty for me to destroy," Hazel said, looking around the bedroom.

Tobias kneels before Hazel to put on the gloves he found for her. "I would gladly eat whatever you offer me."

"Tobias, I love you enough not to punish you with my cooking. All that I can do is peel fruit and even then I must be careful with a knife. If we were a simple couple, you might not come home to a warm plate of tasty food after a day’s work. Thank goodness our life is different," Hazel said, finding a positive in having the palace cooks.

"Now you have me wanting something made by your hands. I don’t care what it is. I will eat it. You can place that with what I want for my birthday. Now, let us get you out of here before I stay true to my words and keep you in this bedroom," Tobias said, smiling while Hazel looked ready to run out.

"You still want more? Is there no end to your want for me?" Hazel questioned. They had spent the first hours of this trip in bed. How was it that he was not satisfied?

"There isn’t. You can only blame yourself for being so sweet. Every part of you is sweet," Tobias said as he lifted her right foot. Hazel was the only woman whose feet he had ever kissed. She didn’t enjoy it, but he would do it just to annoy her.

"Or I should blame having a husband who doesn’t have an end to his desires? We should go," Hazel said, trying to stand on one foot. If she stayed here any longer, he might convince her not to leave this room again.
