The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 275: Tricked (1)
Chapter 275: Tricked (1)
"All good things must come to an end," Hazel said, looking out the carriage window to the familiar sight of homes in Lockwood.
The days seemed to have gone by faster as her trip was over and they were to return to the palace. Hazel wanted to stay a few more days but she could not. Not when they had much to get back to.
While the duration of her trip was fun, Hazel was in a somewhat foul mood. It had nothing to do with her or Tobias but with another letter she was able to receive from her parents. Tobias had gotten a palace guard to have letters for Hazel taken out of the palace right away so they could not be read by anyone.
"Why are we taking this road? It will take us away from the palace. Is the driver lost?" Hazel wondered.
They missed the road meant to take them toward the palace and as far as she knew, they would end up having to turn around to get to the palace. They had been travelling for over an hour now so she could see the driver being tired and confused.
"This is the right way. We are going to celebrate Edgar’s birthday. Alessandra wanted his friends to be around," Tobias answered.
Hazel didn’t believe this was true since Tobias was too silent on the matter. Each year when Edgar’s birthday came around, Tobias would not shut up about it.
What was it about Edgar’s birthday this year that had Tobias quiet? Was there a surprise involved for her or were they not invited by Alessandra or Edgar and Tobias was showing up unannounced? The latter would be a terrible way to end their trip since Edgar would just send them away.
How else would the duke want to spend his birthday other than with his cute wife and his butler of a father? Hazel looked forward to spending most of Tobias’s birthday with only him. Unfortunately, she had to be present for the ball which was held every year.
Tobias was the first to spot the Collins estate in the distance. The place Hazel would call home for a few days. "We are here."
There was nowhere safer for Hazel than where they were right now.
Hazel wasn’t interested in the estate as she was once again jealous of Tobias’s excitement to see his friend. If he had to pick between her and Edgar for who got to stay in his life, would Hazel have a chance? "Should I honestly get concerned about how excited you can get when it comes to Edgar? I tend to get jealous and it annoys me."
Hazel never imagined there would be a day that she got jealous of someone’s friendship and it had nothing to do with Linda. She had only been jealous once when a girl she didn’t know tried to take the position of Linda’s best friend.
Tobias smiled as Hazel was back with the ridiculous idea that he cared for Edgar more. Edgar couldn’t do things for him that Hazel could so she was always going to win. Besides, Tobias wasn’t a fool to get rid of the person who loved him most.
"You do not," Tobias said, holding her hand. " If I had to pick between you and Edgar, it would always be you. Well, unless the matter concerned war and issues with the men in the palace but everything else is you."
Hazel would have preferred that he stuck with it only being her. She couldn’t use a sword but she could offer strategies. She wasn’t given a chance to know if her strategies would be better than everything Edgar could think of.
"How wonderful," Hazel muttered.
Tobias missed that Hazel wasn’t thrilled with his response and said. "Thank you. In a few days, you get to celebrate the birth of your wonderful husband. My parents will be returning from their quiet life to be at the ball. I need to see what has been planned when I get back."
While their last dinner with his parents did not end well, Tobias couldn’t stop them from returning to the palace. It was expected for his family to be present at the ball held in honour of his birthday. As long as there was not a repeat of questioning Hazel, Tobias would let them stay for all of the ball.
Hazel mentally prepared herself for the work she had to do since looking after the details of the balls was her duty. Should something go wrong with Tobias’s birthday ball, blame would be placed on her for not looking over it all with great care.
Just thinking of how much she had to look over left Hazel feeling tired already. "I’m sure there will be a lot for me to look over. Making sure this all goes as planned is my job. We are back from a break to go straight to work. It is better than having to entertain a large group of women again."
Hazel had no plans of calling more women to the palace just yet. She had perfect reason not to and the women should be scared to visit since Sofia had lost her hand.
"I’ll need to see if my parents are in town. The last letter they sent to me said they were going to pay a quick visit to my sister again. It doesn’t seem like her husband wants to visit our side. What an ass," Hazel cursed, annoyed with the Viscount.
After the last letter, Hazel knew the reason behind why it was hard to see her parents or sister. Helena wanted to travel to see Hazel but it was Helena’s husband who kept making excuses which in return pushed back the family dinner Hazel wanted to have.
Tobias wasn’t fond of the viscount at the moment but he did like him for helping Helena to move on. "He is insufferable to be around. I don’t see why your sister fell in love with him and why you aren’t honest with her choice when you are around her."
Hazel sighed and then shared her growing dislike for Helena’s husband with Tobias. It wasn’t always this way as it wasn’t long ago that she spoke highly of him and Helena’s marriage. Hazel couldn’t mention this dislike to Helena as it would only cause problems.
There were moments when reading Helena’s letters about her life in the countryside when Hazel felt that Helena still had some feelings about not becoming queen. Country life was a bit boring for Helena at times. Nothing like the glamorous life she had in Lockwood. Hazel said nothing as she could be wrong with her assumption and did not want to be arguing again.
Hazel could only hope that once her sister finally returned to Lockwood along with her parents who were always out of town to care for Helena, her feelings might change. She didn’t need trouble among her family to be added to her plate.
