The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 276: Tricked (2)
Chapter 276: Tricked (2)
Tobias opened the carriage door for Hazel in a hurry. He didn’t know how but their conversation suddenly turned to Hazel questioning about what he did with one of the candidates of the selection in the library. It wasn’t something he wanted to share with his wife when she was upset already, and he was going to make her more upset by leaving her here.
"We’ve arrived at the steps, so I think it is time we cut this conversation short. Let me get the door for you," Tobias said, hopping out of the carriage to make a grand escape.
Hazel wasn’t finished with their conversation about the young woman he entertained in the selection. "Yes, you do that."
Hazel didn’t care to know about his past flings, but she was curious about the rumour she heard about when she first entered the selection. Tobias had claimed to have no interest in the selection before her, but he had fun with someone else.
Hazel remained seated in the carriage as Tobias went around the other side to open her door for her. She was a little annoyed, but Hazel could let it go for now. Whenever Tobias spoke too much, all she had to do was bring up the rumour and he would get quiet.
Hazel accepted his hand and used it to make her way out of the carriage. "Thank you."
While the visit to see Edgar was unexpected, Hazel welcomed getting to see Alessandra so soon. She needed to have someone to speak to. To know how Alessandra was adapting to her life as the duchess.
Hazel wanted Alessandra’s time adapting to duchess to be much better than it was for her when she became queen. Hazel knew that like her, Alessandra was having trouble with her mother-in-law and then there was trouble from Alessandra’s family.
They all had their battles to face, and it would be much better if they could help each other.
As they walked up the steps, Tobias looked at two carriages parked outside. He placed one as belonging to Dominic but couldn’t place who the other belonged to. He had already informed Edgar that he didn’t want any visitors who would bring trouble to Hazel.
Hazel stopped Tobias from going to snoop around the stranger’s carriage. He was already here, not invited in her opinion, and now he was going to take it upon himself to snoop around someone’s carriage. Did Tobias have some sort of death wish that he failed to mention to her?
"Don’t go snooping around like a crazy person. You are the king and will find out who is here when we go inside. I don’t want to explain why the king is searching someone’s carriage," Hazel said, keeping a tight hold on his hand so he could not go back to acting like a crazy person.
Tobias preferred to search for a family flag, so he knew who was there. "I am not going inside with you so- shit."
Once more, his big mouth got him in trouble. He had rehearsed how he was going to tell Hazel that she was staying here while it would only be him returning to the palace, but he ruined what he prepared.
’He’s not going inside?’ Hazel said to herself. What did he mean that he was not going inside? They were here to celebrate Edgar’s birthday because of Tobias. Hazel had wanted to go back to the palace. It wasn’t like she had made plans with Alessandra so why did she need to be here?
Was this part of the secret Tobias was keeping from her? Was it just a mere gathering with the duchess or were more of their friends going to arrive?
Hazel wanted to question him, but the front door opening ruined the chance to.
Edgar looked at the two who were talking too much outside his door. They should just come in to get the greetings over with and then be on their way so they do not disturb what his wife was doing right now.
Tobias attempted to change the conversation by searching for Edgar’s butler who was normally the one to greet him. Where was the duchess when you needed her to distract Hazel? "Have you become the butler now that Alfred is resting-"
Hazel didn’t want to hear about anything else when she had questions which needed to be answered. "What do you mean you are not going inside? Aren’t we here to celebrate his birthday? What is going on?"
Hazel watched as the coachman began to take her things down from the carriage. Only her things. She had been so distracted when they left Edgar’s other home that she did not realise Tobias’s things were not present. Was this the reason she had more trunks than she needed?
Hazel started to piece together what was happening. Tobias had this all planned out from the start and was only telling her now at the very last moment. "Tobias, why are my things being taken off the carriage? Am I spending the night here?"
Hazel did not want to stay here. She had enjoyed the small break that she received and now she was perfectly fine to return to the palace. Tobias did not need to be worried about her anymore. How was she to let him return to the palace to face the men in the court to tell them about the one month?
It pained Tobias to witness Hazel not wanting to be left behind but he had to do this. What was happening in the palace could not go on any longer.
Before he was certain, Tobias didn’t want to share that he was looking into whether someone was stopping her from having a child. They had just agreed to the one month and he didn’t want this to be what Hazel thought of during her stay.
When Tobias returned for her, then Hazel would know everything. About Grant, anyone he killed, and much more. He just needed her where it was safe. Tobias had to clean up his mistakes. His previous plans were moving too slowly to make the palace safe for his wife.
Tobias turned to Edgar for help. "Help me."
Unfortunately for Tobias, Edgar had no interest in being the one to tell Hazel what was happening. All he was to do was offer his home and protection for Hazel in the meantime. Anything else was Tobias’s duty. "Not my problem."
Edgar returned inside to give the two space to talk. Why was it that when it mattered for Tobias to speak, he wanted to keep his mouth shut? Now was not a time to be a coward. It was time to tell your wife that you were doing what you thought was best to keep her safe.
Hazel didn’t want Tobias to leave her here. She didn’t doubt that he could protect himself but not being close to where she could walk to see him concerned her. What must he do that needed her to be here?
"Tobias, what is happening? What is being said or done concerning me? Do not keep in the dark. Do they want you to take another woman already? I told you I am fine with it," said Hazel.
She had made it clear that she was ready for it to happen. Was Tobias thinking of going to the palace to fight for one month?
Tobias paced back and forth as he thought of how much to reveal to Hazel. She would only understand his decision if she knew what was happening. "That is not it, Hazel. I wanted to avoid you learning of this but I suspect someone might be preventing you from getting pregnant. I don’t know how they got past the royal taste-"
Hazel did not expect this to be what he was looking into. Hadn’t they thought of this and nothing was found? Everyone suspicious was moved from around her but when looked into, there was nothing found which connected anyone to her not having a child.
"What? What made you think this?" Hazel asked as there had to be something new to lead him back to this. What had she missed?
"Grant’s sudden interest in me taking Linda to be my mistress," Tobias answered. This was going to be a lot to leave her with a lot to think about but it would help her understand. "It works out perfectly for him if you cannot bear an heir to the throne. He has been pushing for Linda to officially enter the palace and he’s starting to get a lot of support."
Hazel couldn’t think of Grant having to do with her lack of a child. Tobias was forgetting that Grant was like a grandfather to her. He was there when Tobias picked her as the future queen and present at her wedding, both times cheering her on.
Tobias continued, "I’m going to inspect everyone who tends to you. It might affect your friendship with Linda but I am not going to leave Grant alone."
Hazel only heard bits and pieces of what Tobias was saying as she was still stuck on him suspecting Grant.
