Chapter 288: Saving friendships (2)

Hazel opened her heart to trusting Linda after noticing how nervous Linda was. She had to think that if Linda was unaware like she said she was, it would be hard to stand here whilst knowing that her grandfather was going to be killed for what he plotted.

Linda should be with her family but she was standing here with Hazel. That was enough for Hazel to start trying to trust Linda again and to regret even doubting her in the first place.

Hazel didn’t enjoy sitting in the room as it only added to her feeling depressed. Hence, the women stumbled upon the idea of distracting themselves by destroying Alessandra’s extra canvas in the room.

Hazel didn’t know why she hadn’t thought of destroying something before because all her anger started to go away with each canvas that she broke on the floor. She could destroy the whole room if they would let her.

Hazel’s thoughts went from Grant and Julia to enjoying herself with the friends she had beside her. While her trust was broken by two people she would have never expected it from, there were other people around her that she could not give up on. People who gathered around her at this time.

There were moments during this where she still wanted to cry, but Hazel felt happy just from being around the women present. They were a good distraction from what she learned today and what she would have to face going forward.

Each woman present had their problems to deal with and could lean on each other when life got hard. There weren’t many people Hazel would be able to trust going forward, but she was not going to let this little group she had ended so fast.

Hazel laughed at herself as she failed to break the canvas in her hands while the others were succeeding.

Hazel looked around the room at the others breaking their canvas and asked, "How did the both of you get it to break but I did not? Am I not angry? I mean, I do feel like all I want to do is cry. I’m surprised I was able to walk here with all of you because of how tired I am both physically and mentally."

For the first time, Hazel confessed, "Some days I just feel like I would just go to the balcony of my room and jump from it so I can finally rest."

It was a bit easier to let this be known right now. Tobias was the person she wanted to share this with first but she had a bit of courage to do it now. Perhaps once she shared it she would be comfortable to say this more and not hide it. Then she could get the help she needed to stop thinking this way.

Her confession ruined the playfulness in the room as she expected. Certainly, no one would have thought that she would ever say something like that.

Linda dropped the canvas that she was holding and went toward Hazel, but she stopped as she was not certain if they were fine yet. Hazel allowed her to stay but were they fine for her to comfort Hazel? "Hazel."

Hazel took a deep breath and continued, "I don’t because I think of my husband and my family. I don’t see why anyone is so vicious to have the seat of the queen or be the mother of the next king. You get told you have to share your husband and besides Tobias, no one there really cares about the pain I have endured trying to get pregnant."

Hazel couldn’t forget the pain she was willing to bear so she could have a child and all the vile medicines she had to drink. "The awful medicines I took and the painful inspections on my body when all along there was nothing wrong with me."

Hazel was stuck in a place of wanting to cry but also laugh. There was nothing wrong with her but she spent over three years blaming herself and wanting to harm her body.

Hazel dropped the canvas as she had no interest in breaking it now. She thought of her return to the palace once this had all settled. "I won’t get an apology from everyone who added pressure for me to have an heir. They will push for me to be inspected more and have a child or think that my body is a waste and bring in mistresses."

Nothing would change even though it would come out that it wasn’t her fault. She was still without a child so there would be more complaining. She could already hear some claim that she had taken whatever Julia had given her for so long that they should not expect an heir.

Hazel smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes. "I’m tired more than I am angry. I wanted this to work but it didn’t. I’m sorry Alessandra. Your day to celebrate Edgar’s birthday is ruined because of my problems."

Linda wanted to give Hazel some peace of mind and said, "Tobias will get rid of everyone who had a part in trying to hurt you-"

"Are you aware that means your grandfather will die?" Hazel interrupted Linda. Did Linda not know what her words meant? Grant was the mastermind behind all of this so he was going to die. "I am not just upset with what he was doing to me but what this will do to you. You have always loved your grandfather. If you pick me, you lose him and if you pick him, you lose me."

It dawned on Hazel more of the position Linda was in. Hazel couldn’t imagine herself in Linda’s shoes right now. To be here when your grandfather was going to die.

"You don’t want to become roped into the palace but there are many people who will think you are better for Tobias. They did in the past. You were at the top of the list," said Hazel.

Linda didn’t care about the list. "And yet in a turn of events from our group, Tobias picked you. There was no one but you who Tobias loved. I have never dreamed of sharing a man with anyone else and I certainly would not want to share the man my best friend loves."

Linda would never agree with what Grant tried to do. She was happy to know that her father was not in on any of this and he was helping to protect Hazel. One traitor in her family was enough. "I stand for what is right and that is not my grandfather’s side. I can still love him but not stand for his actions. He knew where his actions could lead him so he has accepted his death and so have I."

Linda tried once more to plead her innocence to Hazel. If Hazel was concerned about them being put against each other again, then she would leave. "When Tobias and Edgar reveal everything and my innocence is proven, I will leave town. I won’t come back so no one has to think of me becoming the king’s mistress. If that can bring some comfort to your mind, I will do it."

Hazel didn’t see it necessary for Linda to move. "Your family isn’t going to move because of this. Your brothers and father are still respected and if they did not know about what Grant was doing to me, they would be fine."

Hazel misunderstood Linda since she wasn’t planning to leave with her family. To end being put against each other, she would marry and go far out of Lockwood. "They will stay but I will go. It would be better if I could get married to someone out of town quickly so the discussion about who I will marry would come to an end. I can’t become a woman of the king if I am married."

Linda didn’t have someone on her mind to marry but she could just pick anyone and go. "There were a few proposals I could accept or spend the next season with my aunt-"

Hazel couldn’t allow Linda to move just for her. "That is not necessary. I would never want you away from your family."

"It is what I want to do so you do not think of me as your enemy. I am long overdue to get married anyway. I have been pestered about my age and- Hazel?" Linda questioned, not knowing what to do when Hazel walked toward her.

Hazel hugged Linda, something she should have done since Linda arrived. "I am sorry for doubting you and feeling like we were competing with each other. It was just all in my head and I feel like a fool for letting everyone’s opinions make me second-guess our friendship. I need you by my side right now."
