Chapter 297: Better place (1)

It took two days to search every room in the palace, inspect all the work of the doctors, and gather all the men who knew of Berkeley’s work and brought him the dead from the court.

Many of Grant’s followers were hanged throughout the two days. It was done by the gates to serve as a warning for anyone else who wanted to go against the king.

Hazel returned to the palace when all the death was cleaned up as Tobias didn’t want her to witness it.

Hazel didn’t know how to feel the first time she entered the palace again. There was a weird feeling she couldn’t explain. A mixture of being uncomfortable yet happy to be near her husband.

Learning of Tabitha knowing about Grant’s plan to get Linda on the throne before anyone else did came as a surprise, but also not a surprise. Hazel knew back then that Tabitha would have loved to have her replaced with another woman.

Then thinking back to how Tabitha pushed for her to be seen by Berkeley in the past after having to go through all kinds of tests to have a child, Hazel needed a break from the former queen. It might have been a waste of time trying to get closer.

"Queen Hazel. She is inside."

Hazel walked inside the room where her guest was waiting for her. During her stay with the duchess, she had been considering whether or not to speak to Julia at least once. In the end, she decided that she wanted to.

Julia was the only ally Grant had that was left alive.

Hazel found Julia tied to a chair so she could not do anything and a guard stood beside her.

Julia frowned and looked away when she saw that it was Hazel who came to see her. She was expecting it to be the king who wanted to question her like he did to everyone else.

"You can’t look me in the eye now after all that you did. How ridiculous," Hazel commented.

After messing with her tea and stopping her from having a child, Julia wanted to act shy now.

"You should be as confident as you were then or is it because death is on your doors that you want to act this way? I heard about your siblings-"

"You are not to hurt them. This was my doing. Should you hurt them you are no different from the men you’ve killed," Julia replied, worried that they might have gone ahead to hurt her family.

"No, I am not like you. I heard that they were going to bring your siblings to get you to talk. Your siblings don’t need to learn how disgusting their sister was. And Julia, you don’t get to tell me what I can or can’t do. If I wanted to be cruel and bring your family here, I could," said Hazel.

Hazel fell into a space where it was hard to care about the families of those who had hurt her. They didn’t care about her family so why should she be kind? Luckily, Hazel didn’t stay thinking that way and wasn’t going to punish the innocent over Julia’s actions. frёewebnoѵēl.com

"Why have you come here? To get an apology out of me? To know why I did it or if I am sorry? I don’t feel like answering any of your questions so just kill me. It is already painful to live without my hands," said Julia.

Hazel looked at the missing parts of Julia’s body. It had to be a challenge to suddenly be this way. "I am not going to kill you and I am not going to free you so don’t look so excited. You are begging for death and it is quite unfair to give you what you want. So rot in the dungeon without your hands."

"How is it fair to keep me alive when I am begging to be killed but you killed Grant and everyone else?" Julia questioned, finding Hazel to be too harsh. Grant was the one who came up with the idea to stop Hazel from having a child. Why was he allowed death?

"Hmm. I would have liked to see Grant punished slowly but I was in too much shock to share my thoughts then. You are the only one left alive now that I’ve returned to the palace so perhaps I am taking my anger out on you. I think it is perfectly fine for me to do that," Hazel replied, not regretting her decision.

"I don’t want to hear an apology from you. I know that would not be genuine and I already know you did it because you loved Grant. I am here because I want to know about Lynn. Was it you who pushed her?" Hazel asked, needing to solve Lynn’s death.

Julia thought that by now Hazel would have forgotten about Lynn but here she was still holding onto someone who had passed so long ago.

"I did it. I pushed her and made it look like she had gotten drunk," Julia revealed, hoping to upset Hazel so she would be killed. "She was quite annoying with wanting all of us to be friends. It’s your fault since you showed that she was your favourite and I needed to take her spot. You should have seen the look on her face before she fell."

Hazel smiled. "So it was you. After all our kindness, that was what you did. You are as sick as Grant. It is no wonder why you fell for him. While I don’t plan to get your family involved, there is an old law that your family must offer money for the innocent life you have taken. Your siblings will need to work hard to pay Lynn’s family for what they lost."

"They should not!"

"That is what comes when you hurt the innocent. Your loved ones sometimes pay the price. Knowing this should give you a lot to think back on and maybe regret. Suffer all alone down there. Suffer like I did because of your actions. Goodbye Julia," Hazel said, turning to leave since she had nothing more to say to Julia.

This would be the final time she ever thought about the maid who once served her.
