Chapter 319: Regret (2)

"Let it be a girl!" Sofia pleaded. Boys were boring and a prince might end up too busy like Tobias once was.

"I’m afraid that is out of my control. We should be grateful for what we are given. I’m sure whether this baby is a boy or girl, you shall get along with them well," Hazel promised.

"That or we kick Sofia out of the palace so our child could be comfortable and not annoyed by someone who wants to play all the time," Tobias joked.

Hazel left the two and went to her father’s side before she had to hear the siblings argue. Her sibling fights were over with and Hazel didn’t want to be in the middle of someone else’s fight. "Father, are those tears in your eyes?"

Nathan wiped his eyes. "They are only there because your mother was getting a little teary-eyed. You know I can’t help it when your mother cries. I’m wishing you well with this one. I will do my best to keep the secret."

"Thank you and you know that you are welcome to the palace anytime when you want to see how I am doing. As long as you don’t do it so often that is suspicious. Oh, is there something you want to say?" Hazel questioned Jeffrey since he was standing off to the side, watching her speak to her parents.

Jeffrey approached the trio alone. "I was waiting for my turn to congratulate you alone. I hope you have an easy time with this. Princess or prince, the kingdom will be excited. I look forward to just having a grandchild."

Jeffrey had waited so long that he just wanted to be a grandfather to anyone. He was confident that there would be a prince so a future king would come.

Hazel was pleased to hear this since it would be perfectly normal for Jeffrey to hope for a male heir to carry on his family line. While most people wanted a prince, Hazel just wanted a healthy baby. She did not look forward to the arguments of why hoping for a prince was better.

Hazel’s only concern about having a princess was how history tended to like to send off princesses to end wars.

After Jeffrey spoke to her, Hazel noticed that Tabitha had remained by herself. While Hazel thought she would let them know about the baby, she was not interested in making small talk that was not genuine. They could sit, eat, and then be on their way.

Instead of trying to pull Tabitha into the conversations being had with Jeffrey and her parents, Hazel went to her seat to sit. She had given Tabitha plenty of chances and didn’t have it in her to be the bigger person all the time. Just having Tobias’s parents here was enough on her part.

"I want to do the names-"

"Certainly not," Tobias interrupted Sofia. She was getting a little ahead of herself for someone who was just the aunt of this child. "When you have a child of your own, then you can name them whatever you like."

Sofia huffed, finding Tobias to be mean. "Fine, how do I get a child like Hazel did?"

Tabitha almost fainted when she heard Sofia’s question. She looked to Tobias to fix it since he was the one to cause this mess. Sofia did not need to be thinking about how babies were made until her wedding night.

Hazel sighed. At least what Tobias said had taken away from the awkwardness among them before. They all should have considered that Sofia would be curious about where the baby came from.

"Shouldn’t the princess be informed about how babies are made? What if someone-"

"Absolutely not! Tabitha disagreed with Tobias. There was a time for Sofia to find out about it and that time wasn’t now. Her husband would explain it or the maids who dressed her before her wedding night. "End this conversation right now."

Tobias didn’t see why they couldn’t explain it before her wedding. What if someone were to try to feed her curiosity behind their back? Certainly, there had to be some way to explain it to her without going into full detail, but it was up to his parents so he couldn’t do anything more.

Sofia didn’t understand why they couldn’t just tell her. Was it difficult?

Hazel picked up a cup of water to drink so her mouth would be full making her not have to speak. She hoped to never be the one Sofia questioned again about where a child came from because she didn’t want to interfere with what Tabitha or Jeffrey wanted.

In the palace, there were plenty of ways for Sofia to find out on her own. One of them was that all she had to do was listen to the maids when they gossip as they often spoke of their relationships and what they see around the town. Then there were books to open her eyes to the naughty side of this town.

"So," Jeffrey cleared his throat. He didn’t want to be present when his little girl had to learn about this. "Have the two of you thought about names or who you will pick to care for the child?"

"We haven’t thought about names and for the latter, I don’t want to rush who I will pick," Hazel answered. She wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

Jeffrey had the perfect person in mind. She had helped with raising Sofia and was still present in the palace. "There is someone-"

"Jeffrey," Tabitha touched his arm to stop him. "Let us eat instead of speaking of this. Let the children decide."

Tabitha knew the last thing Hazel wanted was their suggestion. After what happened with her maid, they had to leave it to Hazel and Tobias to decide who they wanted around the baby in the future.

While Jeffrey was just being kind to suggest it might come off like they were pressuring Hazel and it was the last thing they should make Hazel feel. Regardless of what anyone thought of her, Tabitha didn’t want anything to happen to the baby.

There was something to regret about the fact she could not be involved at all in offering advice about what to do because she was not that close to Hazel. She could only accept that they were kind enough to invite her to the palace to personally tell her. It was her doing it for not trying to like Hazel so she had to accept this.

Tabitha began to serve herself since there weren’t any maids in the room as they needed to keep the secret.

Hazel looked at Tobias. What Tabitha did wasn’t enough to suddenly view her as a changed woman but it was good to see that she wasn’t joining in telling them what to do. Hazel wasn’t ready for that yet.

"We should start eating," Hazel agreed with Tabitha. "The food will turn cold if we don’t start now."

Sharing news about the child had gone well with their families. Hazel hoped that it would also be this wonderful when they had to tell the kingdom.
